If you are just starting out with getting your first domain name, the task can be taunting. First off all you have to decide where you want to buy your domain name. You have the choice of several well-known domain registrars, or you can look for a hosting company that also sell domains.
I think the best way is to buy your domain name with a registrar and go for a separate hosting account. Like this it is much easier if you are not satisfied with your hosting company to switch to a different one. I for example read a lot of good things about Moniker – after already bought my first domains with one of the biggest web hosting companies out there. So my next domains I bought with Moniker – just to keep things separate. Just a word of advice: Some of the big companies obviously don’t want to let you go. So they will try to block a domain transfer for a few months. (They call that in the name of “Security Reasons”…)
So although that didn’t happen to me, I learned from someone else’s mistakes and will always separate the domain registrar from my web hosting account.
OK, lets go on with our subject. You chose now a domain registrar. The next thing you have to do is think about your name. If it is something personal, then go with whatever you like. Just remember that your domain name can only contain up to 67 characters. Now, if you would like to start a business, then obviously choose something that is connected to your business name. In most cases it is almost impossible to get the exact name you would like. So go brainstorm and have fun with it.
You could try to combine words that are connected to your business. For example you are dealing with cars: truck, car, ride, wagon,… Just be creative.
Try to put the words into the plural form. Like truckrepair.com is taken, so try if you can still get: truckrepairs.com, truckenginerepair.com, truckenginesrepair.com,…
You could try hyphenated names. Some people like it and other can’t stand it. The choice is yours. In my opinion, the big disadvantage is that people might remember your name, but then forget to add the hyphens. Also it does not look as nice as plain words. But as I said, if you don’t have another choice or don’t mind, just go for it.
You could also add words before or after your name. For example: truckrepairs.com is taken, so try mytruckrepairs.com or truckrepairsite.com.
Just remember to be also keyword rich. That will help you in the end to be found through the search engines.
OK, you found the name but now you have the dilemma, which ending to choose. The most widely used ones are.com.org.net. These three endings will probably give your site the most authority with search engines. So try to stick to those. You can find those ranging from $6 to $9 per year. Don’t be fooled by the cheap price of.info domains. These not only look spammy but are also not given the same “trust” by the search engines as the first three mentioned ones.
Now my last piece of advice, when you register your domains, you will be asked if you want to register them as private domains. What it means is, that the company will hide your contact details, which include your personal name, address, phone number and email. Some offer that service for free, most other ones charge between $2 to $6. So my advice, always take private registration. It just adds another $2 per year to your domain, but it will be worthwhile. Remember, people can look up your domain name through the “Who is” directories and find all your private information there.
