Domain Name Registrar
You are going to visit a domain name registrar. Similar to the school registrar, this is where you register your domain name rather than your class schedule. While you can get a domain name elsewhere this service is geared for registering domain names. Go Daddy is the most popular service.
While many web hosts offer a free domain name, you do not want one from there. If you have a problem with their hosting and decide to move they may hold your name. They may take days, weeks or even months to transfer it to a new host.
How do I search for my domain name?
You should see a large box that says something along the lines of start your domain name search here. There will be an empty box and a box with.com. Type in your domain name choice there. You want to stick with.com or.net if at all possible. After type in your name and hit search you will be taken to a new screen. Most registrars will have either a red mark to signify your name is taken or a green check to signify that it available.
What if my domain name is taken?
If you are at GoDaddy, on the right you can see that there are other suggestions that are similar to the original domain name search. Typically these suggestions involve adding an extra letter or word.
You can look through the names to see if there is something you like. You may also see if.net is available on the left side. Remember you want to stick with.com or.net. Even if your name is not taken, you will see these names so you can see if you like one of those better. If you original choice is available and you like it then ignore the next bit.
If you do not like any of your choices enter your next domain name choice in the box beside the red circle x. Then go through the steps above looking at the alternatives if your name is not available.
What if my name is available?
Once you get a green check mark and are happy with your choice, click the orange add button. This will add it to your cart. You will go through a couple of screens that offer you various things. These screens can change and may not offer the same things every time. Do not worry, just click “No Thanks” or “Continue Registration” to by pass those.
Register with the Registrar.
Then you will need to register with GoDaddy or your domain name registrar. Just fill out the information as requested. Some people choose to have private registration. This means your information is not on Whois list. This is a list that can be looked up of who actually owns a domain name. However if you want to keep your privacy you will want to use a post office box as your address or use the private registration.
Buying Your Domain Name
After those screens you will be taken to a shopping cart to finally make your purchase. Review your shopping cart to make certain what you want is in the cart and nothing else. Select your payment type and go through the payment process. And now you are the proud owner of your own domain name.
