After years of hard work and struggle you have set up your business.

At the beginning you worked from a rented place which was your work-shop, warehouse your office, your showroom – all in one. Gradually your hard work began showing results and you somehow managed to buy the place you had been paying rent for. As business grew you bought a car. But you wanted to utilize the time traveling to and from your and office. So you hired a driver. Now you are proud owner of an enterprise that employs 20 people.

The good news is that you don’t have to stick labels and tuck in a pamphlet in the local newspapers or hang banners to advertise your company. These methods although still effective are obsolete. What is presently in vogue is the internet. It is in vogue for good reasons. Most of the people not only have access to, but also use the internet on a daily basis. Therefore there is no other better medium or platform to advertise your company or product than the internet. When you decide to make your presence felt on the net you must have your own website. In order to host your website on the net you need to buy a domain.

Why do you need a domain name?

In order to advertise your business on the internet the most economical and simple way is to set up pages on the net containing information about your company and product or service. While addressing the people on a large scale you must bear in mind that your substance should be short precise and complete. The message should be such that it gets ingrained into reader’s mind instantly. This is true when you advertise on the net. If you’re going into business on the Net in a serious way, and especially if you’re advertising to the public, you need your own domain name.

What is a domain?

A domain is a local sub-network. It is an address for sites on the Internet. A domain is attached to all the addresses including website, email, and addresses for various IPs. Some of the Top Level Domains (TLDs) are .com, .edu, .net, and .org.

Tips for finding a great domain name for your business

If you are large company it is advisable that you buy the most suitable domain name for your business. The whole personality of your business can be gauged by its name. It is the most intimate affair for you. It involves the same sentiments as in baptizing your child. You know how difficult it is? You refer so many books. You ask so many people.

When you are confused finding name for your domain, you can try using a domain name generator out these tips and techniques for finding a great domain name for your business:

Think of the products and services your business offers. It will automatically bring forth some names.

Invite suggestions from friends and colleagues. You will definitely come up with some idea.

You could refer books for getting names.

Keep looking around and make a combination of two or more words that will give you a new name for your domain.

Open a few sites of the companies that are in the same business as yours, you should get some idea for naming your company’s domain

Most original ideas are given by children you might consider consulting your child to give a good name to your domain.

Try it out: www.namestation.com

For businesses, holding a naming contest is an excellent marketing opportunity to engage potentially thousands of contestants.

Here are some of the major features in NameStation:

Naming Contests can be created to get name ideas for a specific purpose. Contests can be shared with friends or a private team, responses can be rated. Later on, holding an optional Voting Round with selected name ideas helps filter out the best candidates.

Businesses can create Public Contests and offer awards to get customers involved in the earliest stages of brand development.

Various types of Contests are tailored for finding domain name ideas, brand names, personal names or any other types of names. There is an option to create a Contest to post available domain names only.

Domain Name Search. A big part of NameStation is dedicated to finding available domains. Never a simple task, but there are a number of ways to produce name variations automatically that can save a lot of time.

In addition to generating random name ideas you can work your way towards finding niche keyword domains. Keywords or lists of words can be combined with over 140 preset wordlists in plural and singular forms, random dictionary words or relevant related words can be added .

The Conceptual Wordlists we’ve prepared contain words related to concepts – e.g. fast, secure, unique, dynamic, smart, strong, positive, dynamic, simple, useful. For instance, if you’re looking a name for an anti-virus product, you would use words that are related with security and strength – Castle, Vault, Lock, Wall, Guard etc.

The challenge we tried to tackle was anticipating and eliminating dead-end scenarios. When there are no results, you should always be able to elaborate and continue the domain search to ultimately find suitable alternatives.

Excellent available domain names can also be found in the hand-picked domain names catalogue.

In the core of all this is the fast bulk domain search engine that allows checking over 40 Top-Level-Domains.

Incentives. While there are many people who gladly help others without expecting to get anything in return, most could use a little extra motivation. For those spending time coming up with creative name ideas for you we award our users with Reputation Points, which are given according to the votes given to their name suggestions. Points are only given for submissions to Public Contests and for contributions to the Available Domains Catalogue.

Reaching certain levels unlocks benefits like access to additional features or free Premium subscriptions. There are also ways to get paid for good available domain name ideas.

Social Naming. Connect your Facebook account to interact with your friends and participate in their Shared Contests. Share private Contest links in Facebook and Twitter. Your friends can help with names for anything – when you get a new pet, need a new screen name, role-play character name, start a band or discover a new planet.

Trending Names. We’re monitoring the Web for buzzwords or new product names. There are potentially thousands of domain names needed that relate to words like App, 3D, local, social or brands like iPad or Android. For such names we’ve created lists of names to choose from, which you can extend by adding your own Wordlists.

Some other enhancements worth noting are:

Update Feeds

Personalized Dashboard

How to understand the Domain Name System.

Ever wonder why DNS systems came into existence? Efficiency. Every computer has a distinct IP address, and the Internet needed an elite method for obtaining these addresses and for managing the system as a whole. Enter ICANN.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number manages the DNS root of the Internet domain namespace. ICANN’s role is to manage the assignment of identifiers, ensuring that all users have unique names.

The DNS system is run by a series of servers called DNS servers. ICANN manages the root DNS domains, under which are the top-level domains.
It also manages:

Organizational domains
Geographical domains
Reverse domains

Beneath the top-level domains are other naming authorities such as Nominet, the UK’s naming authority.

How does a DNS Query work?

The process occurs in two parts. Firstly, a name query begins at a client computer and is passed to DNS client service for resolution. When the query cannot be resolved locally, DNS servers are queried.

For example, when a web browser calls the fully qualified domain name http://www.discountdomainsuk.com, the request is passed on to the DNS client service to resolve the name by using locally cached information. If the query is held in the cache, then the process is complete.

If, however, the query cannot be answered locally, the DNS client service uses a server list (ordered in sequence) to query external DNS servers. When a DNS server receives a query, it first checks to see if it is authoritive for that domain name. If it is authoritive, it resolves the name, and the process is complete.

If the DNS server is unable to resolve the query, it in turns queries other DNS servers, using a process known as recursion. DNS servers make use of root hints to assist in locating DNS servers, which are able to provide the required result. In this way, DNS queries are minimised and the Internet is able to operate quickly and effectively.

A typical query may run as follows:

Client contacts Nameserver A looking for http://www.discountdomainsuk.com.

Nameserver A checks its cache, but can’t answer, so it queries a server authoritive for the Internet root.

The root server responds with a referral to a server authoritive for the .com domains. NameserverA queries the the .com server and gets referred to the server authoritive for http://www.discountdomainsuk.com.

Nameserver A queries this server and gets the IP address for http://www.discountdomainsuk.com.

Nameserver A replies to the client with the IP address.

Queries can return answers that are authoritive, positive, negative or referral in nature. In the event of a negative answer, another DNS server is queried.

Many affiliate marketing beginners, or others new to building web sites, don’t have trouble buying a domain name or a hosting package, but when it comes to setting the domain nameservers, they get a little confused. Fear not–once you understand the basic concept, you’ll find that it’s really quite simple.

It’s a way to “connect” your domain name to your host server. Normally, you buy these two things at separate places. Why? Well, it’s safer that way. On occasion, people who bought both at the same place have found that when they tried to switch to another company, their current one holds their domain “hostage,” so to speak, to prevent them from moving. I’ve had several clients lose their domain names and even their entire sites this way. No reputable company would do this, but it has happened.

So there needs to be a way for us to make the two work together. No, not by locking them in a room together until they come out with a more cooperative attitude! We do this with the domain nameservers. When you buy a hosting package, you will get an e-mail with all the information you need in order to access your server space. In this e-mail, you should find something labeled “DNS” or “nameservers.”

This information needs to be entered at your domain registrar’s site. (The registrar is the company where you registered the domain, such as GoDaddy, NameCheap, or whatever.) Log in to your account at your registrar. When you see your domain (or a list of domains you’ve purchased), select it or click on the “Details” link if there is one. Now you need to find the “DNS” or “nameservers” button. It may be named slightly differently at different registrars.

You may then have to choose an option such as “I host my domains with another provider.” You want to specify to your registrar that you are going to enter the “address” of your hosting account, which you didn’t buy from them. You should then see four text fields labeled “Nameserver 1,” “Nameserver 2,” etc. You will only need the first two. Copy the string of text and numbers you received from your host in that e-mail and paste one into box 1 and the other into box 2. (If there is already something in the boxes, replace it.) Click on “OK” or “Save.”

It may take up to 72 hours for this information to propagate to the entire Internet. In other words, your domain “resolves” to the address of where your site resides. Now when someone types your domain name into their browser or clicks on a link to your site, their browser will know where to go to get the information it needs to display your site for them.

To obtain a domain name is to take the extra steps to try and separate yourself from competitors offering like services. If you do not have your own domain name, you may be missing out on lost opportunities by being simply hard to contact or get referrals about.

A business that wants to obtain a domain name for their website is on the right track towards professional presentation. Common offerings of generic URL’s from hosting services give a potential client the impression of an amateur outfit. To obtain a domain will put your business in the same league or further ahead of the competition.

When you obtain a domain name for your business, you will be faced with the very important choice of what name to use. Some people lose out on an excellent marketing opportunity by not attempting to make the most out of their website and domain. A concise, relevant domain that features the name of the business will provide an instant recognition factor for those that repeat it. If you run a self-titled business; it will give your customers or clients the ability to remember your name and subsequently your website. Which puts them in an exceptional position to make contact with you. After all, you will likely have a contact form or contact information listed on your web page for easy access.

To not obtain a domain for your business puts you at an inherent disadvantage against your competitors. Many industries and fields offer very similar products at very similar prices. Every small inch that your business is able to claim against them could result in sales or clients gained. Exceptional customer service is a strong way these types of businesses compete with one another. Each side wants to win their customers’ loyalty so they continue to do business with them.

So the question becomes, “Why does the need to obtain a domain name have anything to do with customer loyalty?”

Which URL is a customer going to respond better to: “http://www.myfakeexamplewebsite.com” or “http://www.myfakedomainname.com/myfakebusiness/index.html”? In addition, what are the chances that if that customer is wholly satisfied with your business and they want to refer a friend; that both of the parties are going to end up remembering the second to the letter? It’s just not a reasonable belief to have given the nature of business. Your domain should be sharp and easy for customers to remember and pass around.

If you run a business or any type of service that caters to other people; there is absolutely no reason for you to not obtain a domain name. The cost in investing in one is minimal for the tremendous benefits it offers to you and your business. There is literally, zero negatives to be associated to when you obtain a domain for your business. It’s all positives. It may not be wholly tangible; but the benefits are real. There are plenty of choices available for names when you obtain a domain name; so snapping up a memorable one is still very possible.

In the world of the Internet, your potential customers may first learn about you and your business through your domain name. If you have chosen a domain name that describes a particular business or service, so much the better! It will be easier for people to find you.

Do not let your ego get in the way when deciding a good domain name. Sure, you are important and there is value in marketing your name, but a personal, cute or generic name may not draw the potential customers that a well thought out name would bring.

Your business is likely to be known for its domain name. It is part of your identity and your market brand. Make sure that it is easy to pronounce and understand. If you are telling someone over the telephone how to reach you online, your instructions should be easy to comprehend.

You may want to protect your brand and your business name by purchasing multiple “extensions” or the.net,.org,.biz, or.info to name a few. If you were fortunate enough to find a good.com name and buy it, protecting your find by owning the other extensions can be a smart marketing move. Owning those extensions will make it harder for a competitor to “muscle in” on your good name.

Certain domain names have value far in excess of what their original owner paid for them. Domain names often trade like a piece of real estate, their prices being set by the laws of supply and demand. I have let a few good domain names slip through my fingers over the years, not realizing that there are a finite number of good names out there and that some people will pay a handsome premium to own them.

And there is also a market for buying names to acquire their old web-traffic. Many expired names have links to and from other sites, the value of which may be increased by directing that old traffic to one of your websites. You may want to buy an expired domain name of a previous competitor to make sure you will not have to compete against that same name in the future!

If you have done a good keyword search of your industry, and put together a list of words that “go together” you might be lucky and get a great name that is popular in those searches. That would drive much more traffic to your website.

Don’t do what I did years ago. If you create or buy a good name, do keep it locked up and wait for the right offer to sell. You can do a Google search to find numerous websites that will appraise, buy from you or sell to you a domain name. Don’t just let them expire!

Everything you need to know about domain names. This article covers the how to's of domain registration.

Domain names (DN) are alphabetic names used to refer to computers on the Internet and contain a suffix such as.com,.org,.gov, or.edu.

A Registrant (end user) usually registers DN through a Registrar. (Hosting companies act as registrars)
Each name is unique.
Propagation time for new registrations is 24-72 hours.
WHOIS maintenance is the sole responsibility of the Registrant.
WHOIS database will indicate the following important information:
The Registrant
Expiration Date
Status
Authoritative Name Servers
Current Registrar

Registrant
The person or company who registers the DN
To do this, they need to contact the Registrar of their choice.

Registrar
o The company with whom the Registrant registers their DN. (Hosting company)
o The Registrar works with one or more Registries to offer different TLDs.

Registry
o The company responsible for a particular TLD, such as.com,.org, or.net.
o The registry maintains the database for that TLD to ensure that there are no duplicate registrations.

ICANN
The various Registries and Registrars are all accredited by ICANN.
ICANN stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.
They are responsible for managing and coordinating the ovrerall DNS.

Registration Process

1. Registrant contacts Registrar

2. Registrar contacts Registry to see if DN is available.

3. Registry contacts Registrar to confirm availability.

4. Registrar contacts Registrant to confirm availability.

Updates and Changes

Any updates to the record need to be made through the Registrar.

The customer contacts the Registrar and provides new information. ( Usually done via a control panel)

The Registrar contacts the Registry with the updated information.

The Registry makes the requested change.

Transfer of Registration

Registrants have the option of transferring their DN registration from one Registrar to another.
o Only after 60 days have passed from the initial creation date.

Request for transfer must be made through the gaining Registrar.

The losing Registrar must provide authorization for transfer.
o Authorization Code

DN must be in an ACTIVE status.

Transfer authorization is sent to the Administrative Contacts email address listed on the Registrants WHOIS record.

ALL communication is sent to the Registrants Administrative Contacts email address

DNS

Is a system that stores, and associates many types of information with domain names.
It translates the domain name (computer hostnames) to IP addresses and vice versa.

DNS consists of three components:

o Domain Names

o Authoritative Name Servers

o Zone Files/Zone Records

Other Functions

Aliases

o A domain alias allows you to point domain names to a domain name that has a hosting product.

o Aliases are NOT included with normal registration fees.

o An alias has the same zone file as the target domain name

Subdirectory DN’s

This feature allows you to create 3rd level domains that point to subdirectories of the corresponding 2nd level domain.

Subdirectory DN’s can be anything you want, such as: mydomainname.com/blog

Forwarding

Forwarding allows you the ability to send all requests for one domain to another URL.
By typing in and entering one name in a browser, you will be forwarded to a website with another domain name(URL or IP address)

The right domain name has to have one or two most important keywords. A short meaningful phrase is acceptable. If your business is about flowers include the word ‘flowers’.

It’s going to be difficult to select the name you want: a lot of good names are taken. At the time when I am writing this article, in October of 2010, internet is almost 26 years old. So, what do you do?

Use synonyms of the words you target

Buying is another option

Keep the domain name short or at least as short as possible. If people have to make extra efforts to get to your website by typing a long name and misspelling it anyway, they might give up or you will be sending traffic to your competitors. Keeping the domain name short will be advantageous to you. It’s much easier to type a short name than a long one. That’s obvious, but some people get trapped in long domain names.

Another opinion: get a longer name because it is easier to memorize. Go figure!

The name of the domain has to make sense and be easy to memorize. How about a name that is related to the core of your business and rhymes? Sounds impossible? I’ve seen that happen.

If your company has a long name and you are trying to abbreviate it that might not work at all. The abbreviation will make sense to a very small amount of people.

What to avoid:

Using definite and indefinite articles (a, the) while selecting the domain of your choice

Using plural form of a noun. I think it takes the focus away from the subject

Place keywords in domain names by all means, even if you have to add a less significant word just to find an available name for your domain. For example ‘AutoInsuranceSane.com’ – ridiculous name, yet understandable. It also allows the main keywords to shine.

How long does it take to find a good domain name? My longest personal record – 10 days and 8 hours. The shortest record – 15 minutes.

Want to beat the learning curve? Discover the #1 domain name selection mistake that entrepreneurs make all the time.

Have You Made This Domain Name Mistake?

When I accidentally evolved into a writing coach for folks on the web, I struggled with creating an identity for myself. I had already built a pretty popular site and brand in one particular niche and people called me by the moniker that I gave myself in that niche. I was stuck for weeks like that. I just didn’t know what to do.

I worked with a coach who recommended that I use my name as my branding position as a writing coach. She thought my last name was memorable and not many people were going to have it on the web. She was right about that. What she didn’t tell me though, was that I wasn’t a celebrity, so people were not going to naturally search for my name yet. They didn’t know me. They were going to find me through other keywords such as “writing” or “article marketing”.

So without that knowledge, I went on to make the same mistake that I had essentially made with my first business as well…So what was my domain name mistake? I did not secure and buy a keyword rich domain name for my main site. I reserved my name.

Even years later when I check my website statistics, most people that find me organically – find me through keywords that I have optimized my site and articles for. Not my name. So that even furthers my proof that I should have reserved a keyword rich domain name rather my first and last name.

Okay, So Why Is This Important?

Through my years of article marketing, I have become somewhat of an SEO expert, and now know just how much importance search engines like Google place on having a keyword rich domain name. In case you are wondering, they place a LOT of importance on it.

What this means is that if I had reserved a name like articlemarketing dot com, my articles would have fared a lot better, and ranked a lot faster, in the search engines.

Now when I write and publish an article to my site, my articles are ranked within 24 hours, but it took a long time to build that type of traffic and importance with the search engines. That didn’t happen right away. I know that if I had had a keyword rich domain name – it probably would have happened a lot faster.

Next time you conduct a search, notice the domain names of the websites that appear in the top results. Sure there are a few whose URLs are completely off topic but they are usually very high traffic authority sites like major newspapers, television, encyclopedia sites, etc. The others are keyword rich (not so famous) sites that could be one of ours!

Last Advice

1 – If you are new to the internet and have not yet built your website/blog, then make sure to secure a keyword rich domain name right away and make that your PRIMARY URL.

2 – If you are already on the web but your website is only a few months old – I’d make the switch to a proper URL.

3 – If you have been on the web for awhile and have a lot of content like me, it wouldn’t make sense to switch your URL now because your content has probably already been crawled and appears in the search engine results. Changing the URLs could mean broken links and a lot of frustration. Trust me – I tried it.

So what you could do is purchase keyword rich domain names that you can use for landing pages, squeeze pages, redirects, sales pages, etc. Having those pages pointing to your main site will help your standing in the search engines, and are almost as good as having a keyword rich primary domain name.

To compete in the internet, users must increase their web presence and one way to do it is to have multiple domains. With more website, they may get more exposure. So, should webmasters go for multiple domain hosting?

To compete in the internet, users must increase their web presence and one way to do it is to have multiple domains. With more website, they may get more exposure. So, should webmasters go for multiple domain hosting?

Prices of domain are very cheap nowadays due to intense competition and users will also not have to worry about the difficulty in managing multiple domains because hosting companies now provides multiple domain hosting packages.

With more domains, users can increase their outreach and reach more audience for their online business. Each website can provide extra possibilities in increasing their revenue and also the possibility in capitalizing a new niche. Even though users might not be thinking of owning a few websites at the moment, they can actually buy the domain first and only add the hosting when they feel appropriate. Getting the domain name earlier is a good idea because good domain names are selling like hotcakes.

The best thing about having multiple domains is the ability to diversify your revenue streams. Instead of depending on one niche, users can rely on a few niches with few domains but managing them from one control panel. There is no need to learn how to operate different control panel. Managing your domains can be easily done and more time can be spent on marketing.

Having multiple domains can also optimize your search engine ranking because you can create a network of websites that link to one another using backlinks. With each domain osted on its own Ip address, you can create backlinks from them and improve the search engine ranking. With this, you can bring in more visitors and more profit.

So, is having multiple domains a good thing? It is good if you have the intention to have more than website because you could manage them well from one location and maximise the search engine to rake in more profit and also create revenue from different niches.
