An IP consists of many numbers which are often too long and too difficult to remember and not user friendly. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the foremost body that organizes the links between IP addresses and domain names throughout the Internet, so that you can find a Web site by simply entering a user freindly domain name (which is much easier to remember) instead of an IP address into your Web browser.

A domain is made up of two essential parts, a top-level and a second-level domain. A top-level domain (TLD), referred to as the domain extension, is the portion of a domain name located to the right of the dot (mysite.com). The most common domain extensions are .COM, .NET, and .ORG. Some the other more popular extensions are .WS, .INFO, .BIZ, and .NAME. These common extensions have certain guidelines you must follow in order to qualify for them, but are usually available to any anyone, anywhere in the world.

In addition to the more common top-level domains there’s what is known as restricted or (rTLD’s). They have extensions like .AERO, .BIZ, .EDU, .MIL, .MUSEUM, and, .NAME, requiring that the registrants represent a certain type of organization, entity or to belong to a certain community. For example, the .NAME domain extension is reserved for individuals, while .EDU is reserved for educational entities and so on.

Country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) are for Web sites and registrants located in a particular geographic location, and want users to be aware of their location such as .BZ (Belize), .CA (Canada), .DK (Denmark), .EC (Ecuador), .IE (Republic of Ireland), .UK (United Kingdom), .US (United States).
The portion of a domain name found to the left side of the dot (mysite.com) is referred to as the second-level domain (SLD) name. The second-level domain name is the “comprehensible” part of the address and refers to the organization, group, or entity behind the Internet address. This portion of the Domain is what will identify and distinguish you from other entities on the internet. Second-level domain names have to be “distinctive” on the Internet and registered with an ICANN-accredited registrar.

What is a Whois listing?

The Whois record contains very important information associated with a particular domain name. It has facts such as its creation date and expiration date; the name of the registrar of record, and various contact information such as (administrative, technical, etc.). Whois records are collected at the time the domain name is registered and is a matter of public information. The Whois documentation appears whenever a person conducts a Whois search on a particular domain name to find out who owns the domain in question. However, most domain registrars offer private registration for a small fee. This will keep any private information that you don’t want to be known publicly from being displayed in the Whois database.

Domain Name Lookup – How To Do It And Why You Might Want To

There are many reasons you might wish to do a domain name lookup. These may include the following -

1. To find out if a name is already taken, if you wish to buy it. You may have a great idea for a site, and need a particular name. (In this case, just type the domain name onto the address field of a browser. You will either get a message that the site can’t be found, which implies it is not registered yet; or you will be taken to a web site which uses the domain name already.)

2. To see which individual or company owns a specific domain.

3. To get the contact details for the owner of a domain, so that you could send an offer to buy it.

4. To use the lookup information to contact the domain owner or technical contact to complain about something offensive or inaccurate on the web site, or, for example, because the site has content or images which have been taken from a site you own yourself, breaking copyright. (In this case, the nameserver information may give a clue about the name of the hosting service used by the domain owner, whom you could also complain to.)

5. To contact the owners of a domain who have infringed on a trademark which you own or control.

So, how do you do a domain name lookup anyway? Simply go to whois.net and use their search boxes. This is free. (Apart from whois.net, there are many other domain name search tools too, of course.) Minimum registration data for existing domains which you will be able to see following a lookup includes the registrant’s name, who the domain is registered through, and the nameservers. Depending on the registrar’s policies and setup, you may also be able to get a contact email address, a physical address and a phone number for the registrant and for the technical contact.

In addition, you may be able to see the date when the registration of the domain expires. This does not mean, of course, that the domain would be available to buy after that. Most domain registration services now have automatic domain renewals when the expiry date arrives, to protect their customers.

In some cases, the owner of a domain will have made a private registration, so that no personal details are available through who is lookups: the registrar’s contact details will be available instead.

In addition, most of the good domain registration services will allow you to do a domain name lookup, then buy any available domain there and then.

So where do you start in the quest to establish your own independent real-estate website? The First Step – Register Your Unique Real estate Domain Name.

A domain name is your own unique address on the world wide web – just like your telephone number or email address. Protect Your Domain Name

Imagine you’re the owner of a successful Web site, but when you logon one day all you get is an error message. Or worse yet, the domain name now points to a site full of advertisements. That’s right. You’re out of business.

This happens every day because of a perfectly legitimate process known as “drop catching,” where people quickly snag the domain names owners have let expire and try to resell them or use the links associated with the names, which could be extensive, to create Web sites loaded with advertisements. You can easily avoid becoming a victim of a drop catcher by better understanding how the domain registration system works to protect your domain name.

Your Web site, with all the content you have so painstakingly added, sits on a computer with a unique address called an IP address, which is simply a series of numbers. A domain name is an address forwarding service that directs visitors to the site using this IP address. Domain names are used instead of numbers because most people find it easier to remember a name rather than a bunch of numbers. It’s as if you could dial your friend’s name into the telephone instead of his phone number.

You can purchase a domain name by registering it with a provider of domain services such as GoDaddy.com , the largest on the Web, or any number of other registrars. The name can be registered for just one year, for about $10, or for as long as ten years, for around $80. Many register for only one year because it’s cheaper, or they only want the site for a limited time.

At the end of the year, the registrar usually sends an email renewal notice to the owner. If the owner doesn’t respond to the renewal notice, the domain name will eventually be made available for purchase by someone else. Roughly 20,000 domain names become available every day because the owners allowed them to expire, or the owners didn’t realize that their domain name was up for renewal

According to the rules established by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers(ICANN), domain registrars have 45 days after the expiration date to notify the owner that their domain name is going to be dropped from the registry. If the name is dropped, the guidelines then call for a 30-day grace period during which the owner can still claim the name. After this grace period and then another five-day holding period, the name is dropped from the registry and anyone can claim it.

Since 2004, however, a number of domain service providers, starting with SnapName.com, have created an auction process for expired names which bypasses the original drop process and makes the names available in as little as thirty days. GoDaddy.com begins the auction process even before the names have officially expired, although it does warn the auction participants that the owner could still claim their name.

These providers of domain services each have tools on their sites to make it easier to grab expired names. They provide constantly updated lists of expired names, various auction services, search engines, and other free tools for anyone to quickly and easily find available domain names. Some sites also offer software for sale that further simplifies the search for expired and soon to be expired names.

With the surge in online advertising, drop catchers will continue to seek out domain names from sites with good traffic, anxious to exploit the established links. Protect your site and your business by checking the expiration date of your domain name. Relying on the registrar to send a renewal notice that could easily be sent to an old email address or get lost in the spam catcher, could cost you years of hard work.

If the domain name is not available then the system will give you alternative selections. Select the domain name you require and then the system will offer a list of extension options e.g..com.biz.org.me.info at the end of the domain name. If you are setting up a business then I would suggest you go for.com, if this is not available then select a.net or.biz. These are the best names for a company. You can also select country specific domain names e.g..co.uk for the United Kingdom. The.org extension is used for government and charitable organisations so do not use this extension type unless you are a charitable organisation.

Once you have selected your domain name then proceed to checkout. Unless you have a burning need to buy other services that they will offer you then only buy the domain name. When you get to the checkout the system will have automatically priced this for 2 years, if you do not need it that long then you can select in the drop down box how long you want to buy the domain for. Remember you will have the first option to renew so you do not need to buy up front for multiple years. Once you have selected the timescale required follow the checkout process and you will be the proud owner of a domain name on the Internet.

It is worth thinking about the domain name you have selected and review if it is worth buying the same domain name but with different.extensions. If you think a competitor could buy your domain name but with a different.extension and take business from you then you should think about buying the domain with multiple.extensions to protect your business.

Although it may seem complicated, once you have bought one domain name and understand how easy it is then your next problem will be to stop yourself buying them.

What is a Domain Name and how do i get one?

This may be such an easy question for people that have used the Internet before, but still I find people who just don’t know.

Well my starting point to find out what a domain name is would to be use a website called wikipedia. Its basically a free encyclopedia online.

After a search for the term domain name  it says the following:

A domain name is an identification label that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control in the Internet, based on the Domain Name System (DNS). Quoted from wikepedia.

Well if I had read that when i first started I wouldn’t of had a clue what it was going on about. So in simple terms:

Its an Internet website address. Its what you type in in your browser address bar to visit the website that you require: Example: www. google . com

Domain names were invented to avoid having to remember a string of numbers when we want to go to a web site. . Computers that are connected to the Internet are identified by a set of numbers (an IP address) The string of numbers can be typed into your browsers address bar to visit any website but its easier to remember names rather than numbers.

Choosing the correct domain name is very important.The reason for this is you need something that relates to your website, something that’s easy for your visitors to remember so they are likely to visit again. Something that will be unique to you and something that stands out.

As well as the above reasons you also need to choose carefully because of search engine optimization. I will go into SEO later but if your website domain name contains what your site relates to in its content this helps gain standing in the search engines eyes.

Everything about your domain is important:

 - length – You don’t want it too long that people forget it, or mistype it

- dash or no dashes – Dashes can be good to separate words but can make domains longer or mistyped.

- brand ability – Can you brand your site easily? Does it fit in with the content?

- search engine keywords – Always good to use keywords in your domain name, but its tough these days with so many Domain names already taken,

Only one person or company can own a domain name at any one time. Therefore, if you wanted the domain name www.webdesignwhim.com  , its not available as I own it, you will need to either find another name that is available, or offer to buy the domain (no I’m not for sale its just an example . You could also wait for it to expire and hope they don’t re-register it… but its not likely to happen or you could be waiting a long time.

You dont actually buy your chosen domain name. You register it, so its a bit like renting it Once a domain name is registered, its normally registered for one or two years but can be up to 10 years, and if locked no one else can take that particular domain name. Its your responsibility to re-register the domain name each time before it expires. If a domain name does expire it will go back onto the open market for someone else to register this. Always make sure you keep your domain name safe.

Ok a new way to buy real estate has emerged and it’s called domaining, yes domaining. The address of a website is called a domain name and you can not have a website unless you have a domain name. Imagine a vacant block of land that still has an address. An example is ‘number one smith street’ and although there is no house on it this block of land still has an address ‘number one smith street.’ So when people decide to start a website, they will need to register a domain name. Quite often the name they desire is already registered by some one else and more often than not it is by a domainer!

Which is ok because it is legal to register a domain name to be sold at a later date. Some people register domain names as their investment portfolio instead of other types of investments such as the stock market or land. What is a Domain Name? Your website has a unique address called an IP address. The domain name–in essence, is the IP address with a naming convention. It is far easier for people to remember a name instead of a bunch of numbers.

Once you have your domain name, and your website is flourishing — you must protect your domain.

So how do you protect your domain? At the end of the year, the registrar will send you a notice that your domain name is about to expire. Inadvertantly, you may be thinking, that they just want your money, and they can darn well wait til the date it is due to get your money! Well, I wouldn’t do that. There is a very legitimate process called “drop catching”– that can easily destroy all your hard work in one instance.

Drop Catching

Drop catching is a legal process by which people can quickly grab domain names that have expired and use the link to create a website consisting of advertisements — or worse yet, resell them to make a profit off of your hard earned traffic. So, it is wise that you do not wait til the last minute to pay your registration. You do not want to log-in to your site, to find an error, or find out that suddenly you are no longer in business.

The rules of the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), gives domain registrars 45 days after the expiration date to notify the website owner that their domain name is going to be dropped from the registry. After the 45 days, you have a 30 day grace period, then your domain is up for grabs. However ..

Some domain services have created an auction process for expired names, such as GoDaddy.com, that begins the auctioning of domain names in as little of 30 days after the expiration date, to prospective buyers. However, GoDaddy.com does state to the prospective buyer in the auction process, that the original owners still have the option of reclaiming their name.

What’s in a name? If it’s a domain name, it can be your future online. So choose wisely, and protect what you worked, or have been working for — a business online.

When you are choosing a domain name you will probably be looking for a .com or maybe a .net. This on the whole is sensible advice, but if you are offering something a little bit different on your website and you want to stand out then there is another path you can take.

First let me give a quick and simple explanation of the different parts that domain names are made up of. Let us start with the top level, this is the end part of any web address such as .com or the myriad of other top level names that are now available. The part next to the top level domain is called the second level domain. The second level domain is the part that you register with a domain name registrar. For my site the second level domain is NameSearchDomain.

The part at the from of the web address is the third level domain, this is excluding the www part. The third level domain is often referred to by your web host as the sub-domain, it is just a sub-domain of the second level domain name. You can set this part up with your web host if it allows you to use sub-domains.

This is a very high level overview of how a web address is made up, there is more to this but for our purposes this is all we nee to know. To clarify here is an example using Google.

You do not need to enter the www part of the address in your browser, just typing in Google.com will take you to the website.

Now you know how a web address is made up you can use your imagination to come up with a clever and distinctive web address. If you take a look at del.icio.us you can see an interesting use of the available domain names to spell the word delicious. Here they have registered the domain name icio.us, the us part is the top level domain that represents North America. A sub-domain of del has been created on their web server which completes the creation of a catchy web address.

Why not use the same principal to create your own web address, there are many top level domains to choose from, far too many to list here. As many of the less well known top level domains are not used there will be a lot more domain names to choose from. You can use this method to create a distinctive web address and become more memorable to your visitors.

If your domain name is long then it can make sense to break the name up using hyphens. For example instead of using drummondleisureandentertainment.co.uk you could have
drummond-leisure-and-entertainment.co.uk which is easier on the eye.

You can get help when grappling with this issue by keying in your initial ideas as URL searches with your chosen registrar. As well as seeing what’s available, alternatives will be suggested to you, broadening your field of possibilities.

2. What kind of Domain Extension?

When you have the first part of the address sorted, you need to decide what kind of domain name extension you are going to go for. There are so many possibilities that there’s a danger of being overwhelmed by choice.

The main rule of thumb is if your business is just aimed at the UK market, then go for .co.uk. If your business is international and/or aimed at the USA as well as the UK then it would be worth going for .com and .co.uk. There are many other variations such as .net , .biz , .info , etc .

If your brand is important to your business then it would certainly be worth registering all the relevant domain extensions. There is nothing worse than someone else registering one of the others, perhaps the .com extension because you were only concentrating on the UK market. It is not necessary to buy every domain extension but it is definitely a good way to go if you are keen to protect your brand.

3. Note Down Registrar Details and Renewal Dates

After registering the domain, the most important thing is to note down all pertinent information including contact details of the registrar, confirmation that your payment has been accepted, usernames, passwords and renewal dates.

Keeping the registrar details handy means you can check back for new services and offers and you’re more likely to notify the company of any new contact details. This is essential if you want to renew your domain when the original agreement runs out.

Most domain name registration companies will send renewal reminders via email and so it is vital you keep your email up to date with the registrar. Notify them immediately if your email address changes. In most cases you can do this within your online account.
Remember, you are not buying the domain name outright forever. You really own a temporary licence on that name. You pay for the use of the domain name for a fixed period. A .co.uk domain can be purchased for a maximum of 2 years and will be renewable every 2 years. Others such as .com , .net , .biz etc. can be purchased for up to 10 years at a time.

It’s very easy to forget to update the registrar with a new mobile number or your personal email address so get into the habit of checking your account details with the registrar every once in a while.

4. Email Services

Now that you have secured your domain names you are ready to get your online business up and running. To begin with you will need get your email address set up and then turn your thoughts to getting a website designed.

Most domain name registration services do not include full email. If you want email services with your domain name, an additional charge is likely. In most cases you will only get email forwarding. Even for straight forward POP3 email, expect only 1 or 2 email accounts as standard.

You should make sure you get at least 15-20 POP3 email accounts included free of charge with your domain name registration. Most web hosting companies do not offer free POP3 email accounts either because they offer domain name registration as an extra service.

5. Website Design and Hosting

To get your online business up and running you will need to have your website designed and hosted. Again the choices are vast and it can be a real minefield. Ask around as you’ll probably have friends, family or work colleagues with web design experiences to share and companies to recommend.

You can also check to see whether your domain name registration company offers hosting. In most cases, your web designer will include hosting for your website. If this is the case, you should always ask who they use for their web hosting. Check them out on the Internet to see whether you would be happy trusting them to look after your online business.

You have a few choices in how your website is designed. You could have a go yourself using the many different website building tools on offer. Again, most companies that offer domain names and hosting also offer a website builder. If you want a more professional looking website you will need to choose a website design business. A basic website which just displays information with between 5 and 10 pages will cost a few hundred pounds. For a more complex website with an e-commerce database for selling products online, expect to pay anything from a thousand pounds upwards. Like most things in life; you do get what you pay for. As with any job you outsource, do a little background research and ask to see previous examples of work done for other clients.

The domain name registration process can be confusing to first time buyers. There are a number of terms to worry about. Hopefully, with the information below, you’ll be able to successfully register domain names while avoiding the pain that can sometimes come from the domain registration process.

If it is your business name and you intend to be in business for at least the next five years, I would register it for five years. That way, you don’t have to worry about it for a long time. Miss an email and you could lose your domain name. Don’t take a chance. Lock your domain name right away.
