Simple Steps to Choose the Right Domain Name

Choosing the right domain name is probably the most important aspect of any online business. There are many reasons for this. The domain is the word that users type into their browser, it is written on every promotional material, itcould be associated with some product or brand name and is therefore easily remembered–the domain is a unique word that identifies your presence on the web. Therefore choosing the right domain is extremely important.

To register a new domain name you simply go to your favorite registrar and follow steps for registration. Here you can expect the first problem. Your excellent, brandable, hard-to-find, easy-to-remember, fantastic domain is already registered. How is this possible? Very simple, domains are registered on a first come, first serve basis. There are some rules regarding using trade marks and other registered names, but in general, anybody can register any name. If somebody has registered your protected name you can start legal procedures to get this domain. In all other cases you will have to find a new domain.

Besides the domain name itself, you can also choose among different top level domains. Those domains are the start (literally the end) of every domain name. The most popular and widely used is the.com top level domain (TLD). This is purely commercial TLD and is the first association when typing the website’s address into address bar of the web browser. Therefore, this should be your first choice. yourdomain.com should be the first choice when checking availability of domains. If the.com domain is already taken then there are two other universal top level domains -.net (network) and.org (organization). Some prefer.net as a second choice while others go for.org. It is up to you and the purpose of your website. There is also.info TLD but it is not recommended for business websites.

An alternative approach to find a free domain is to add dashes between words like your-domain.com. This might solve your problem but it is not recommended. Users rarely type dashes in the browser’s address bar and names with dashes might look spammy to some search engines.

If you intend to build a website for a specific product or to address some specific service you can crate the domain with the main keywords for your website. For example, cheapusedcars.com could be a domain name for website dedicated to cheap used cars.

The com, net and org top level domains do not specify the origin or target country. These are universal, general purpose domains. You can also select country top level domain. Each country has its own top level domain. If you intend to target only specific country, then this could be a good choice.

When you will start a website, this domain will get identity and value. If you will publish interesting content and promote website, than this will increase the value of the domain. Domain is also a valuable asset. It is not uncommon to sell a domain for few thousand $ or more.

One example of a domain for specific products is http://homehairremoval.org/ which clearly indicates the content of the website. This way it is very easy to remember the domain name and it easy to type it in the browser’s address bar to go to the home hair removal website.

Buying a Domain Name – How Do You Actually Do It?

If you are interested in buying a domain name, this is how you go about it.

There are two steps you have to follow – deciding on the name you want to buy, and then buying or registering that domain name. When you own the domain you can decide whether to make a website for it, or just to keep the name as an investment.

1. Deciding on a domain name

You will find that buying a new (previously unregistered) domain name is much simpler and cheaper than buying a domain name which is already owned by someone else. This is because the field of domain names has become engulfed by speculators who buy up thousands of names, hoping that one day some of them will become valuable. These names are put on sale at ridiculously inflated prices.

A new domain name on the other hand can be registered for about $10 a year. Contrary to what you may have read, it is still possible to register a great new domain name which you have thought of yourself, and is not taken yet.

To decide on the name you want to buy, you need to think of keywords related to the subject or theme you are considering. Then combine the keywords to find a likely domain name. Of course, if you are buying a domain name related to a person’s actual name, a company name, or a place name, then the process will be much simpler. You can check if any name you want is still free by simply typing it into the address field of a browser like this – [http://www.name-you-want-to-check.com] – and then seeing if you go to a web site, or get an error message. If you get an error message like ‘cannot display the web page’ the domain is likely to be free, and you can buy it.

2. Buying the domain

To do this, you go to a domain registration service (we recommend a couple of these below).

You simply set up an account with your name, address, and email address – these details are used to record you as the legal owner of the domain – and then register the domain you want. It will cost you about $10 a year to register the domain. You may choose a standard registration or a ‘private’ one, which means your name and contact details as the owner of the domain are not available to the public. A good domain registrar will email you each year before the registration expires, to give you the option of renewing it – or you could opt to register the domain for a longer period.

Once the domain is yours you could sign up for hosting and build a web site or install a blog; or you could leave the domain ‘parked’ with the domain registration service for free, until you are ready to use the domain or sell it.

Buying your new domain usually only takes a few minutes. To see what domain registration services I recommend, and to get started, go to my page about buying a domain now.

The Concept of Domain Registration

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is a unique name for a web site, like microsoft.com and invoicera.com. Domain names must be registered. When domain names are registered they are added to a large domain name register, and information about your site – including your internet IP address – is stored on a DNS server.

DNS stands for Domain Name System. A DNS server is responsible for informing all other computers on the Internet about your domain name and your site address. A domain name in its simplest form is just an Internet Website address. Just as your house or apartment has its own unique identifying address for the post office, so does each and every Website in existence.

The domain name system was originally created for the benefit of humans. The actual address used by computers is numerical in format and is referred to as an IP, or Internet Protocol, address. An IP address takes the form of four series of numbers separated by periods. An example of an IP address is 215.55.258.145, and as you can see this would not be easy for most of us to remember. So to compensate, the domain “name” system was created. It’s much easier to remember a website named “XYZ.com” than it is to remember a number such as the one above.

Registering a Domain

Domains can be registered from domain name registration companies such as dotdnr.com. These companies provide interfaces to search for available domain names and they offer a variety of domain name extensions that can be registered at the same time. Domain Name Registration provides registration services for .com .net .org .biz .info .us .nu .ws .cc and .tv domains. Newer domain extensions such as .biz .info and .us have more choices available as many of the popular domains have yet to be taken. While .com and .net domains are well established and recognized, most popular domains with these extensions are already registered.

Sub Domains

Most people are unaware but they already use sub domains on a daily basis. The famous “www” of the World Wide Web is the most common example of a sub domain. Sub domains can be created on a DNS server and they don’t need to be registered with a domain registrar, of course, the original domain would need to be registered before a sub domain could be created. Sub domains can be requested from your web hosting provider or created by yourself if you manage your own DNS server.

Some providers will offer you a unique name under their own name like:
theircompany.com/yourcompany/

This is not a real domain name, it is a directory – and you should try to avoid it. These URLs are not desirable, especially for companies. Try to avoid them if you can afford to register a domain. Typically these are more commonly used for personal sites and free sites provided by your ISP, you may have seen theircompany.com/~username as a common address, this is just another way to share a single domain and provide users their own address.

Domain Name – Tips In Selecting A Good Domain Name

Finally you have decided to set up your own online business. Before you can even get started, you need to find a domain name. A domain name is basically the internet address of your website.

A domain helps you to differentiate your online business.

Before you go to domain registrar to register your domain name, you may want to consider the following points.

  1. Your domain name should be your Internet Business name. That is, if you have an offline business, your domain name should be your company name.
  2. If you do not have one, then you domain name should contain at least one keywords of the products or services you are promoting.

For example, if you are selling a product that teaches people how to play golf, you domain name should contain at least the main keywords “Golf”. If you include the keywords of your product or service, it can helps to improve the search engines ranking of your website.

  3. Write down at least 10 keywords relating to the product or service you are promoting. Brainstorm on a few good domain name and write it down on a piece of paper, just in case the domain name you want to use is already taken. An ideal domain name should be short and catchy so that it is easier to remember

  1. Select name that are Purpose Driven , Benefits Driven or Brand Driven.

    Example: mybestfishingguide.com (Purpose Driven)

      howtokeepfit.com (Benefit driven)

      Nike.com or Google.com (Brand Driven)

Your chosen domain has to be a domain name that is not already registered by someone. Likewise, once you have selected and registered your domain, no one else can register the same domain name just as there can never be two houses with the same address.

If all of your choices are taken, consider using a different domain extension like .net, .biz, .cc or .info extensions, where

  • .com – for commercial / community sites. This is the most overused domain entity on the Internet. Recommended for your Internet Business.

  • .info – for information sites.

  • .us, .co.uk, .ca, .de, .sg, .fr – for whatever your local country. This is more expensive than the rest.

  • .net – for anything internet related

  • .tv and .fm – for television and radio sites.

  • .org – stand for organization. A lot of online communities use this domain entity and it is for nonprofit sites.

  • .gov – for public housing and government site. All government web sites use this domain entity.

  • .biz – for business site. Recommended for your Internet Business.

  • .edu – for research and education.

Most internet marketer would prefer .com as it can perform better that other non-domain name. In the same example above, you may want to come up with a domain name.

Alternatively, if your favorite keyword domain name is taken, you can add a “filler” before or after the keywords.

With these tips in mind, I am sure by now you have a better understanding of how to choose a good domain name. Start brainstorming now and you’ll be on your way to own your very first online Business name of your choice.

Don’t Register A Domain, Register A Domain Package

If you are considering building an online business then you need a domain name. For search engine marketing the domain should consist of the main keyword related to your business. It should be short and without numbers or hyphens. These are the basic rules for domains ideally suited for high search engine ranking.

Let’s say you have an idea but no web site. What is your first step? Well, you need to register the domain first.

The .com ending is the preferred domain for search engine optimization, however, if you are trading in the UK then the .co.uk domain ending is the natural choice. In this case, I recommend you register both.

When you register the domain it is a good idea to use a registrar that can provide email facilities for your domain. If you are not ready to upload a web site then you can still use your domain name for your email to your new domain.

Many companies provide free email and web forwarding with domain registration. This means that you are able to register the domain and ‘point’ it to any website address and forward any email sent to your domain to any existing email address.

However, what you really need is a ‘full’ email service for your domain when you register it.

If you just use email forwarding, then you are limited to only RECEIVING email to your domain which is forwarded to your main email address. You are still unable to SEND from your new domain. So if you are marketing your new site prior to launch, you really do need a full email address that allows both sending and receiving email to and from your domain name.

A full email service is one that includes POP3 mailboxes so you can both receive email sent to your domain address and send email from your domain name. This provides a much more professional look to your email marketing as the receiver of the email will see that the message is originating from a domain name related to the kind of service you are marketing and may avoid unnecessary spam complaints.

Some companies will offer Spam filtering with the domain service. Considering that 90% of email that is sent is Spam this service is extremely useful in keeping a tidy ‘inbox’

Another feature to consider when registering the domain is autoresponders. An autoresponder can be set-up to provide automatic email responses. Autoresponders reply to incoming email instantly and automatically. You can set and change the text of the reply and the trigger address whenever you like. Autoresponders are ideal for customer service or informing people when you are away.

Most companies that register your domain will offer a ‘full email service’ as an extra and is usually a monthly fee similar to a hosting fee.

When you are ready to upload a web site to your domain then you will need a hosting plan. The company that registered your domain may provide hosting facilities and it should be a simple upgrade of service from ‘forwarding’ to ‘hosting’

Why You Are Wasting Your Time Without Your Own Internet Domain Name

Today more than ever having your own domain name is an absolute must for many reasons. In this article I reveal some of them. Keep in mind there are many more. And today domain names are available all over the web for a very reasonable fee. The prices have come way down over the past few years. There is absolutely no excuse if you are truly serious about your online business not to have your own domain name.

Imagine for a moment you are surfing the web, and you run across a link with a headline promising that if you click it, you will discover a way to earn a phenomenal income. So, you go ahead and click it and stand by to be taken to the associated web site. Here’s a small part of the psychology that goes on in 89% of web surfers minds as they look for helpful web sites.

Using the example above, lets pretend the person is going to your web site and when they get there they see it’s an address that looks kind of like this…

    http://members.aol.com/usersname/index.htm

What’s the very first thought the little voice says to them in their head? They hear a very loud voice saying…

“This web site is not making any money cause the owner can’t generate enough money to purchase their own domain name!”

It doesn’t matter if this is true or not. You could be doing very well with a non domain name but if the majority of people assume otherwise, think of all the business you will lose every day. I know this first hand and when I think about it, it makes we wish I had got my own domain name much sooner than I did. I used to have a small little web site hosted on AOL. It was two megs and I thought it was doing pretty well. Once I got my own domain name, my daily visits jumped dramatically and my orders more than quadrupled!

Our company web address now has a commanding presence on the web because we have our own domain name.

Without your own domain name people will not take you seriously. Having your own domain name also will allow you to have very professional email addresses such as… sales@WorldwideAdNetwork.com, or anything else you desire like staff@…, president@…., information@…. etc. Can you now start to see why this is?

So by now you should already realize how crucial it is for you to have your own Internet domain name. There is one more step needed before you sign up for a domain name. You will need to check to see if the name you want is already taken. One easy way to do it is to type in the name you want and see if it comes up as a valid Internet address. The other, and much more reliable method, is to conduct a WHOIS search. A WHOIS search will tell you if the domain name you want is available and if not who owns the Internet name. Anyone can very easily get their own web domain name. And today there are many hosting companies available to pick from.

A word to the wise about picking a domain name. Always try to come up with a domain name that is generic in nature and will not lock you into one certain type of business. You will discover new and interesting programs as you learn more about the Internet and you will want to include some of them on your web site. if the name of your site limited you to one certain type of business, it would confuse site visitors and you will lose business.

I of course have to let you in on another challenge you are up against. The “domain name entrepreneurs”, these are people who decided one day to sit and think of all the best possible domain names one might desire to own. Yes, you guessed it, they bought up tons of good names. Why? because they know Internet domain names are transferable. This means they can pay $70.00 for the name and then sit on it until someone comes along who wants it. Right again, the owner can sell the domain name for whatever amount they can get for it! There are many sites on the web that do this. These people always demand insane prices for these domain names as they know some of the really best names will generate tons of web traffic just on the name alone. Think about it.

Alright, so you know you need to come up with a name. Try to pick a name that is very easy to remember. Imagine you were telling someone in a hurry what the domain name is and you want to make sure they will remember it on their way home from a shopping mall for example in rush hour traffic. The best domain names are simple one or two word names. Ours is the name of our company. I chose it because the words are highly searchable. I’ve also found that if you r company name is one thing, and your web domain name is something else, some people will write their checks out to your domain name. Remember the web is full of new people learning!
