Buying the Right Domain Name

What is a Domain Name? Your domain name is your web address. Just as we have street addresses for our home, domain names are addresses for our websites. This is the identity of your website, its home, its place to live on the web so to speak.

In order for someone to find your business on the web, you need to have a domain name. Buying a name is not hard to do. All you have to do is pick the right name for your company keeping in mind that buying a domain name requires much forethought. Buying domains can help your business growth but can also kill your business if you don’t buy the right name that reflects the product or criteria of your companies needs. Buying domain names is quite easy if you follow a few simple rules of thumb. By making sure you do your research, use good judgment that the domain name will identify with your business, you will have a successful domain.

One of the first things to do when you check into buying a domain name is to find out how much the domain name is going to cost or how much it will cost to register a domain name you already have in mind. You should be able to successfully register your domain name for $10 and under per year. You can register your domain for as long as you see fit, but it is always advisable to make a long term commitment and buy a domain name for at least 5 years.

I would suggest only buying that consists of letters even though numbers and hyphens are allowed. By using more characters, a mixture of letters, numbers and hyphens, you make your domain to become hard to remember. Thus, you may possibly be pointing potential clients to competitors with similar domain names. You are allowed up to 67 characters when buying domain names, but you really should keep it short. The shorter the domain name, the easier to remember.

One other way to buy domain names is to resell it in future. Not always are you buying a domain name to benefit your company, you may want to check into buying domains to resell and make a profit.

Here are a couple tips for buying cheap names for resell:

1. Research before registering the domain name
2. Look to buy names that are going to be easily related to markets that you can turn around and sell easily
3. Make sure that any domain name that you buy is free of trademark infringements
4. Once you buy the domain name, make sure that it is marketed and registered
5. Make your domain name stand out
6. Resell your domain name once it has been appraised

Either way, regardless of whether you are buying a domain name to promote your business or if you are trying to make a business buying and selling names, most rules apply to both. You need to do your research before you buy any domain name for whatever reason. Make sure that the name you choose is going to benefit the need. Keep in mind that most companies that sell names also provide other services as well, such as web hosting and domain buying. You may have a one stop shop at the click of your finger if you do proper research.

Domain Name Ideas – Choosing the Right Domain Name

Choosing the right domain name can be critical to the success of your website.
A very (possibly the most) powerful domain name contains “keywords”. Keywords are essentially words that people will type in to search engines when they are looking for your product or service. A good keyword-type domain name for a lawn service in Houston, would be houstonlawns.com.
You can also choose a domain name containing your company name. If your company name is Smith’s Roofing, a good name might be smithsroofing.com.

There is not a lot of mystery to selecting a good domain name. It is mostly common sense.

  • Keep it short. People will likely not remember, nor want to bother typing in a very long domain name. Who would feel like typing in, smithsbaitandtackleshopamarillo.com for example.
  • Keep it simple, as easy to spell as possible. You don’t want to have people misspell your domain name and reach someone else’s website.
  • Avoid domain names that sound like or contain the trade name for another company. You would not want to try to register searsautomotive.com for example. Even if your last name really is Sears, you could get in to a legal battle.
  • Avoid hyphens. It is simply too difficult for people to remember. Which words are hyphenated? Which aren’t. Even Wal-Mart dropped the hyphen from their domain name in their advertising. You can still reach their site by typing in wal-mart.com, but it now redirects you to the URL without the hyphen. If your domain name idea is already taken, again, adding a hyphen is not a good solution. It is just going to route people to the competitor’s site if they forget your domain name is hyphenated.
  • Make it appropriate. The domain name should reflect something about your line of business or your business name. Anything that does not associate your company with your domain name in people’s memories may not be remembered.
  • Use the “.com” TLD. If the .com is taken by someone else, using another TLD like .net or .org is not a good alternative. It will most likely send people to the competition’s site, because people are just too used to the .com
  • Consider buying other common TLDs in addition to the .com. For instance, the .net and .org, .us, maybe the .biz. You can redirect people to the .com site very easily. This way competitors and “squatters” will not be tempted to adopt the other domains out from under you.
  • If your domain name is easy to misspell. For instance, smithsshingles.com, people may not remember if there are one or two letters, “S”. You may want to buy both terrysshingles.com and terryshingles.com and redirect to the same site. Google did this very thing. If you type, “gogle.com” in your browser, you will go to Google.com

One more consideration: Is the domain available? Just because you type a domain in your browser, and get a site not found error does not mean the domain is available. There are tools all over the internet that will tell you if a domain name is already taken.

Selecting the Right Domain Name Matters

Research 5 Top Keywords

When you first begin your domain name search, it helps to have 5 terms or phrases in mind that best describe the domain you’re seeking. Once you have this list, you can start to pair them or add prefixes & suffixes to create good domain ideas. For example, if you’re launching a mortgage related domain, you might start with words like “mortage, finance, home equity, interest rate, house payment” then play around until you can find a good match.

Make the Domain Unique as much as possible

Having your website confused with a popular site already owned by someone else is a recipe for disaster. Thus, I never choose domains that are simply the plural, hyphenated or misspelled version of an already established domain. I still believe that Flickr desperately needs to buy Flicker.com – I hear kids in their 20′s tell parents in their 40′s and 50′s to see photos on Flickr and always envision that traffic going straight to the wrong domain.

Try to choose Dot-Com Available Domains

If you’re not concerned with type-in traffic, branding or name recognition, you don’t need to worry about this one. However, if you’re at all serious about building a successful website over the long-term, you should be worried about all of these elements, and while directing traffic to a .net or .org (as SEOmoz does) is fine, owning and 301′ing the .com is critical. With the exception of the very tech-savvy, most people who use the web still make the automatic assumption that .com is all that’s out there – don’t make the mistake of locking out or losing traffic to these folks.

Make it Easy to Type

If a domain name requires considerable attention to type correctly, due to spelling, length or the use of un-memorable words or sounds, you’ve lost a good portion of your branding and marketing value. I’ve even heard usability folks toute the value of having the letters include easy-to-type letters (which I interpret as avoiding “q,” “z,” “x,” “c,” and “p”).

Make it Easy to Remember

Remember that word-of-mouth and SERPs dominance marketing (where your domain consistently comes up for industry-related searches) both rely on the ease with which the domain can be called to mind. You don’t want to be the company with the terrific website that no one can ever remember to tell their friends about because they can’t remember the domain name.

Keep the Name as Short as Possible

Short names are easy to type and easy to remember (the previous two rules). They also allow for more characters in the URL in the SERPs and a better fit on business cards and other offline media.

Create and Fulfill Expectations

When someone hears about your domain name for the first time, they should be able to instantly and accurately guess at the type of content that might be found there. That’s why I love domain names like Hotmail.com, CareerBuilder.com, AutoTrader.com and WebMD.com. Domains like Monster.com, Amazon.com and Zillow.com (whom I usually praise) required far more branding because of their un-intuitive names.

Avoid Copyright Infringement

This is a mistake that isn’t made too often, but can kill a great domain and a great company when it does. To be sure you’re not infringing on anyone’s copyright with your site’s name, visit copyright.gov and search before you buy.

Set Yourself Apart with a Brand

Using a unique moniker is a great way to build additional value with your domain name. A “brand” is more than just a combination of words, which is why names like mortgageforyourhome.com or shoesandboots.com aren’t as compelling as branded names like bankrate.com or lendingtree.com. SEOmoz itself is a good example – “SEO” does a good job of explaining the industry we’re in and creating expectations, while “moz” gives a web association, and an association with being free, open, and community-driven.

Reject Hyphens and Numbers

Both hyphens and numbers make it hard to give your domain name verbally and falls down on being easy to remember or type. I’d suggest not using spelled-out or roman numerals in domains, as both can be confusing and mistaken for the other.

Don’t Follow the Latest Trends

Website names that rely on odd mis-spellings (like many Web 2.0 style sites), multiple hyphens (like the SEO-optimized domains of the early 2000′s), or uninspiring short adjectives (like “top…x,” “best…x,” “hot…x”) aren’t always the best choice. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but in the world of naming conventions in general, if everyone else is doing it, that doesn’t mean it’s a surefire strategy. Just look at all the people who named their businesses “AAA… x” over the last 50 years to be first in the phone book; how many Fortune 2000′s are named “AAA company?”

Domain Resellers

When searching for domain companies, web design companies, internet marketing companies you will be spoilt for choice as there are so many. The same can be said for domain resellers which make the domain business a lot more competitive. Many web design or marketing companies have now become domain resellers as they buy so many domains themselves it makes sense to become a reseller and buy domains at cheap prices and then pass these savings on to their customers.

So what is a domain reseller? A domain reseller is someone or company that have registered to become a domain reseller and that can now sell domains. The difference between buying a domain of a proper domain registrar compared to buying them off a reseller is basically cheaper prices and better customer service. Resellers are agents for domain registrars. Because resellers buy their domains in bulk they are able to buy them at a cheaper price and sell them cheaper than the domain companies. Sounds confusing? It really isn’t. Resellers are just like middle men, they act as agents for the domain companies. They buy domains in bulk at wholesale price and then sell them on. Simple!

If you are seriously considering becoming a domain reseller then you need to find yourself an ICANN Accredited Registrar. When a domain company becomes ICANN registered they are known as a trusted and reliable domain company. This is because ICANN( the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, one of whose jobs is to manage the assignment of domain names and IP addresses) keep the domain name system working and stable.

When a domain company is listed as ICANN registered you know that the domain company has been given the thumbs up the ICANN. In the world of domains this is a serious pat on the back. And it doesn’t come cheap; it costs domain companies a lot of money to be classed as ICANN Accredited Registrars. There are hundreds of ICANN-accredited registrars worldwide so it is worth looking at a few and finding out which ones offer the best reseller packages.

Anyone can become a reseller but most resellers are companies that already have an internet based business such as Web Design companies and Search Marketing companies. But you don’t have to have this type of business, you might just like to sell domains and going through the domain reseller option is the best, simplest and cheapest option.

The Creation of Global Domains International

Global Domains International is rated #37 of the top 500 fastest growing privately held companies in the USA. What this means is that this company is successful. For the customer it means they can trust in this company and ensure their website is secure. Global Domains International sells domain names and hosts websites. They have capitalized on a unique idea that has moved this company quickly into the forefront of the world wide web.

A domain name is a websites address. The domain name extension is the part at the end, dot come, for example. Website addresses are used instead of IP address which are a long series of numbers that would be difficult to remember. A typical website address looks something like this: http://www.onlinewebsite.com or in the case of Global Domains International the website address would look something like this: http://www.onlinewebsite.ws.

When the internet first became largely popular everyone was using domain names ending in dot com. The founders of Global Domains International, Michael Reed and Alan Ezeir realized that finding a domain name extension other than dot com would become something valuable. They looked at the country codes assigned to each country. For example, the United States has dot us and the United Kingdom has dot uk. They focused on a small country that had yet to capitalize on their domain name extension – Samoa. Samoa is a small country in the South Pacific with a population of less than 200,000. There domain name extension is dot ws. Mike and Alan immediately recognized the marketing potential of ‘ws’ when used as an abbreviation for website.

The reason a good alternative to dot com was needed is that as more people began publishing websites the available names with the dot com extension were dwindling. That made it difficult for a business or person to register the domain name they really wanted. Eventually all the good, easy to remember and logical dot com domain names would be taken. The extension ‘ws’ was perfect because it is easy to associate with the word ‘website’. This is what Michael and Alan recognized and why they set out to convince the country of Samoa that they could profit from their country code.

Michael and Alan met with leaders in Samoa and with the local technology company who had the rights to the code. They told them how they could make a profit off the dot ws and how beneficial it could be to their country. They also explained how they would sell the dot ws domain names. The leaders agreed and allowed Michael and Alan to use the dot ws extension.

Global Domains International quickly took off. The Samoa government told Michael and Alan that they would need to sell 15,000 domain names in the first three years in order for them to continue using the domain extension. This task was completed in the first month. Today Global Domains International has sold domain name registration to large companies like Yahoo! And Intel. The Samoans receive a percentage of sales and is pleased with the partnership with GDI.

GDI has been so successful because it fills a need. The dot com websites soon did become obsolete and other domain name extensions were needed. Mike and Alan have created a user friendly product and offer templates and hosting to help customers build their website. Global Domains International is at the top of its industry because of the hard work and dedication of Michael and Alan

Making Money from Parked Domains

Let me tell you a true story. A friend of my who likes to collect domain names was describing a few that he had acquired. While he has a wide range of domains in various categories, these particular domains were all related to web hosting.

Some of the domain names were similar to existing web hosting company names (or derivatives of web hosting company names). Others simply had ‘hosting’, ‘host’, or a related term in the domain itself.

So my friend and I were talking and he said something like, “Yeah, it’s a shame – if only I had the time to develop some content for some of these domains then I might make some money form them”. It turns out that he had no content on any of the domains – just parked pages, or no content at all. When I investigated the domains, it turned out that there was a small but steady traffic stream that visited these domains. Some simply typed in the domain, others apparently found the domain through a search engine that had categorized the parked page.

So I suggested the following to him – why not use a service that will take the domain as is – with no content whatsoever – and suggest search options that generate revenue for each click? He took my advice, grudgingly I might add, and guess what? He made $50 the first month from just a few of his domains.

He was so excited that he asked what he might do to further increase his revenues from his domain names. I suggested that he use his parking pages (these can be customized with some hosts) to test banners from affiliate programs with the highest paying hosting companies. He placed only three banners at the top of his pages – with a brief description of the company’s product offerings taken straight from their web sites. This also proved to be a great success – and his revenue stream increased.

My friend has since invested some time and energy in monetizing his other domains. He has either pointed the domains to a pay per click search engine, or listed affiliate links on almost every domain. This has turned a lackluster domain speculation business into a profit generating pay per click and affiliate business that requires almost no effort to maintain. Needless to say, my friend has taken my out to lunch a couple of times since then.

If you have parked domains and what to try getting paid for search results on those pages, check out this service offered by Sedo (there are others out there as well):

Domain Names

Domain names are relatively straightforward! Or at least that’s the theory!!

The domain name is also, but technically not quiet correct, known as the website address.

Using an ISP’s domain name can look amateurish in an e-mail addresses, it is much more so with websites, giving the impression of hanging on another’s coat tails. The only exception being when a firm wants to re-inforce a local or professional affiliation by appearing as part of an existing site dedicated to a region or association. Even in such cases autonomy and continuity are better assured by having one’s own domain and merely using a page on the third party’s site to point users toward it.

Domains are classified according to their endings or “suffixes”. As a commercial organisation a company will almost certainly want a domain ending in .com or .co.uk. Other endings such as .biz and .ltd.uk are at least to date, insufficiently familiar to users, meaning the name can be too readily misremembered. Of the two desirable suffixes, .com is preferable for business with international activities, and arguably gives the impression of a bigger organisation, whilst .co.uk helps reassure users on the largely American-dominated web that they are indeed dealing with a UK firm.

The part of the domain name before the suffix will usually by the firms trading name, provided of course that the domain name has not already been registered, (which is increasingly likely these days). If the name is very long an abbreviation may be considered. Domain names are not case sensitive.

The actual registration of a domain name is a straightforward process that can be done online, either through your ISP or better still through a dedicated registration service company such as Discount Domains Ltd (http://www.discountdomainsuk.com). Renewal fees must be paid, typically every two years.

Checking if a domain name is freely available is very straightforward as most domain registration services provide a WHOIS service, as the name suggest, this checks the ownership details of a domain, note however that such services normally run 48 hours behind actual registrations.

Moving ISP’s can save money, however it may take time and incur extra charges. Pricing in the domain name registration industry have fallen considerably over recent years and a domain name typically now costs from $15 for two years registration.

Once your domain name is registered, you can either leave the domain name “parked” awaiting future use, or point it at a website, this is usually achieved by changing the Domain Name Server, or DNS settings on the domain to point at hosting company where your website is located. Almost all registration services offer a free user control panel to change these settings.

Web hosting is the provision of space on a web server to publish a web site. There are numerous hosting companies in the market, and most domain registration services also offer a hosting solution. Prices vary but $100 per annum should be sufficient for most business needs.

Domain Name Registration For Your Online Business

Deciding on a new domain name is a bit like preparing for a job interview. First impressions count. Registering a name that conveys the spirit of your business; is easy to remember and has the right extension can seem a little daunting. When the URL is emblazoned on your company stationary and painted on your fleet of vehicles, there’s no going back. Unlike in a job interview, you can’t buy time or think on your feet if your answer falls flat.

That’s why your web site URL has to give the right impression and secure that crucial second interview. That means encouraging visitors to log on and search the site. Get it wrong and your company name will be quickly filed in the rejected pile.

No matter how seasoned the web user or experienced the business person, the simple task of deciding on a domain name and registering the address can be a complicated decision making process.

1. Think Carefully About Your Brand Principles

Before deciding on a snappy name for your new web property, what do you want your site to say about your business? Are you going to offer information only, will it be an online catalogue, will you sell online or do you just want to encourage visitors to call your office? If you already have a company registered then it makes sense to register a domain name in the same name. If you are just setting up in business try and make sure your domain name matches your trading name.

Whatever you want your web site to do, make sure the name reflects this as best as possible. A name such as Google doesn’t say what they do, but because their search engine was very good at delivering relevant searches, word spread very quickly and now the world knows what Google is. In fact, it’s now a term in the dictionary; “To Google”!

So, you can either go for something very obscure such as Yakabozi or choose a domain name that reflects your business. Research your competitors. Have they chosen their company name as their web address or do they have a generic URL? Is your company name effective as a web address or is it too long?

If your domain name is long then it can make sense to break the name up using hyphens. For example instead of using drummondleisureandentertainment.co.uk you could have
drummond-leisure-and-entertainment.co.uk which is easier on the eye.

You can get help when grappling with this issue by keying in your initial ideas as URL searches with your chosen registrar. As well as seeing what’s available, alternatives will be suggested to you, broadening your field of possibilities.

2. What kind of Domain Extension?

When you have the first part of the address sorted, you need to decide what kind of domain name extension you are going to go for. There are so many possibilities that there’s a danger of being overwhelmed by choice.

The main rule of thumb is if your business is just aimed at the UK market, then go for .co.uk. If your business is international and/or aimed at the USA as well as the UK then it would be worth going for .com and .co.uk. There are many other variations such as .net , .biz , .info , etc .

If your brand is important to your business then it would certainly be worth registering all the relevant domain extensions. There is nothing worse than someone else registering one of the others, perhaps the .com extension because you were only concentrating on the UK market. If at a later time you choose to target the US market you might want to use the .com and this could mean having to pay an inflated price to the original registrant.

It is not necessary to buy every domain extension but it is definitely a good way to go if you are keen to protect your brand.

3. Note Down Registrar Details and Renewal Dates

After registering the domain, the most important thing is to note down all pertinent information including contact details of the registrar, confirmation that your payment has been accepted, usernames, passwords and renewal dates.

Keeping the registrar details handy means you can check back for new services and offers and you’re more likely to notify the company of any new contact details. This is essential if you want to renew your domain when the original agreement runs out.

Most domain name registration companies will send renewal reminders via email and so it is vital you keep your email up to date with the registrar. Notify them immediately if your email address changes. In most cases you can do this within your online account.
Remember, you are not buying the domain name outright forever. You really own a temporary licence on that name. You pay for the use of the domain name for a fixed period. A .co.uk domain can be purchased for a maximum of 2 years and will be renewable every 2 years. Others such as .com , .net , .biz etc. can be purchased for up to 10 years at a time.

It’s very easy to forget to update the registrar with a new mobile number or your personal email address so get into the habit of checking your account details with the registrar every once in a while.

4. Email Services

Now that you have secured your domain names you are ready to get your online business up and running. To begin with you will need get your email address set up and then turn your thoughts to getting a website designed.

Most domain name registration services do not include full email. If you want email services with your domain name, an additional charge is likely. In most cases you will only get email forwarding. Even for straight forward POP3 email, expect only 1 or 2 email accounts as standard.

You should make sure you get at least 15-20 POP3 email accounts included free of charge with your domain name registration. Most web hosting companies do not offer free POP3 email accounts either because they offer domain name registration as an extra service.

5. Website Design and Hosting

To get your online business up and running you will need to have your website designed and hosted. Again the choices are vast and it can be a real minefield. Ask around as you’ll probably have friends, family or work colleagues with web design experiences to share and companies to recommend.

You can also check to see whether your domain name registration company offers hosting. In most cases, your web designer will include hosting for your website. If this is the case, you should always ask who they use for their web hosting. Check them out on the Internet to see whether you would be happy trusting them to look after your online business.

You have a few choices in how your website is designed. You could have a go yourself using the many different website building tools on offer. Again, most companies that offer domain names and hosting also offer a website builder. If you want a more professional looking website you will need to choose a website design business. A basic website which just displays information with between 5 and 10 pages will cost a few hundred pounds. For a more complex website with an e-commerce database for selling products online, expect to pay anything from a thousand pounds upwards. Like most things in life; you do get what you pay for. As with any job you outsource, do a little background research and ask to see previous examples of work done for other clients.

This is just a quick 5 step guide to point you in the right direction. There are so many different options and to be happy in your choice, always make sure you take your time and check out any service provider thoroughly before committing. That way, you should avoid many of the pitfalls.

What is Domain Parking?

Domain parking is one of the truly greatest sources of passive income. Although not as much as a few years ago, is still a very lucrative business and one of the internet’s best kept secrets.

What is domain parking?

A very simple and accurate definition of domain parking consists in the purchase of domain names for the sole reason of “parking” them.  A parked domain is a web page that only shows ads, somethings Google AdSense type ads.  Since it goes against Google AdSense TOS to have have web pages that only show ads, parked domains need to be hosted with a domain parking company.

Is there risk in domain parking?

There is very little risk associated with this activity.  While each domain costs about $9 a year to register, there are domain name registrars that let you test domains and delete them within a 5 day grace period for a small fee.  Currently the so called deletion fee is about $1.  If you decide to delete (return) the domain, you get the remainder of the money credited back into your account allowing you to just repeat the process.  You can test as many domains as you want at a time, and just keep the ones that are going to pay their yearly registration fee in parking revenue.

Where to park domain names?

While you test your domain names for revenue, and after you decided which domains to keep, you must park these domains with a parking company.  There are many to choose from, and all you have to do is run a Google search for “domain parking” to get a list of a few of them.

Once you find and sign-up with a domain parking company, all you have to do is point the nameservers of the domain to those of the parking company and add the domains to your account.  The entire process takes a few minutes.

Most parking companies will supply you with a range of options to help you customize the look and feel of your parked domain in order to increase the CTR (click-thru rate) on your ads.  The higher the CTR the higher the revenue you will be able to achieve.  It will also be possible to pick a keyword for your parked domain.  The choice of keyword must be relevant to the topic of the domain and will be one of your most important choices.  It will influence both your CTR and the value of each click.

What Are Domain Names and Where Do You Get Them?

A domain name is really an alias for an internet IP address. Every website has an IP address that tells a web browser where to access the content from. An example of an IP address might be 22.255.155.14. It is much easier to type in domain names in your browser, rather than a bunch of numbers. A domain name is much easier for your customers to remember than numbers as well.

If you want to purchase a domain name, you can purchase them through a domain name registrar. This is a company that is registered through ICANN which has the ability to allow you to purchase domain names. You might already know this, but only one person can own a certain domain name. You can purchase as many domain names as you want, but they must all be unique. You can of course purchase a domain that is similar to another domain with a different extension. The most common extension of course is .com but those are getting harder to find by the day.

You can also purchase a domain name through a web hosting provider when you are purchasing a hosting package for your site. This might save you time and even money. Some web hosting providers offer you a free domain name when you purchase services with them. Be sure to make sure that the domain name you want is available first if you have someone else register it for you. This will save time rather than the hosting company emailing or calling you to let you know that the domain is already taken. You can find out if a domain name is already taken by going to a domain name registrar and doing a whois on the domain.

If you choose to purchase a domain name through a registrar, you are going to need to update your account to tell the registrar which IP address to point your domain name to. Your website hosting company will be able to provide this information to you. If your hosting company registers the domain for you, they will do this step.

If you are going to purchase multiple domain names, the best suggestion would be to register them all with the same domain name registrar. Doing this makes it easy to access all your domains at the same place. You might even be able to save money when you renew your domains if you are renewing multiple domains at the same time.

Make Money With Domain Parking – Leverage Domains Right Now

Domain parking has become commonplace for domain owners. There was once a time when owning a domain name was so costly that only the brave would do it. Now, it’s so cheap that people keep on buying domains without prior plans on what they would like to do with them.

Domain Parking Helps Monetize The Mess

This is where parking comes in. You point your unused domain’s name-servers to a parking provider (like NameDrive), who would then show commercial links on them, giving a cut of profits generated to you. Parking has become so common that it’s not working the way people want it to.

If you parked say a 100 domains, you would find that only a few actually pull in money, and even fewer pull in something worth counting. That’s the reason domain parking has become a business, with big players making money with an army of strategies they have perfected over the years, to surpass those who don’t yet have the mastery.

Domain Parking Does More Than That

Mostly, you would want to park those domains which you have planned on developing later. But major players buy domain with the sole intent of parking.

Parking a domain can result in indexing of your domain name, if not already done so. Some parking companies advertise your domain in many known and unknown ways. But it depends on the quality of your domains. Most of the traffic to your domain are the ones you’re already getting. Parking only provides as a (rather ineffective) means to monetize it.

Parking companies also allow you to put your domains for sale. If you’re not planning on using it, then selling it for a profit would be  the right thing to do.

Making Sure That Parking Brings You Money

It’s very difficult to pin-point single domain names that would bring profitable traffic. It’s sometimes cheaper and easier to buy domains in bulk, see which bring in money, and discard/sell those which don’t.

Testing is something that cannot be avoided. A domain which you think might be useless would prove to be a winner and vice versa. So, primarily, you’d want to acquire domains already getting traffic, from forums where people are willing to sell them. Visit domain websites like Sedo and SnapNames, and see what they have to offer. You will need to research and work hard to find winners, but it pays off in the end.

Now, simply parking your domain with a company won’t get it ranked in search engines like Google, slimming your chances of making some good cash. Why? Because all it contains is advertisement links, and nothing else. What you need is a parking company that builds content websites on your domain, with quality articles search engines crave for, all on autopilot. And there is a company that does exactly that. Click here to find out about it.

Is Your Domain Name On Someone’s Wanted List?

A good domain name is, and will always be, essential for any online business. If you ask me, the internet is still only just evolving from infancy. It’s a long way to maturity.

Still the world has come a long way since Ken Olson, president & founder of Digital Equipment Corp. etched his name in history, when he proclaimed less than 30 years ago, “There’s no reason why anyone would want a computer in their home.”

How technology has changed our lives within a span of a single generation. Sooner rather than later, more and more businesses will want to go online and cater to a global market instead of being content with the local neighborhood. And one of the first steps after deciding what business you want to do, is getting a good domain name for your business.

A domain name can make or break an online venture. A domain name is a company’s identity online. It is your brand, your personality, your trademark. So, choosing the right domain isn’t easy.

BuyDomains.com argues that:

“Today .COM and .NET names have established recognition and can identify your company on the Internet forever. For this reason, they have considerable resale value and serve as excellent investments.

Over time, most, if not all companies will conduct a considerable portion of their business over the Internet. A domain name that is easy for your customers and prospective customers to remember is the key factor in generating new business and conducting business on the Internet.

Having relevant “keywords” to support your domain name is also an important consideration and will enable customers to find your online business effortlessly through Web based search engines.

Another excellent marketing tactic you should consider is to have multiple URL addresses (including your domain name) point to the very same Web site. This is very simple …..This will allow you to keep your legacy domain name, while multiple new e-business names conduct commerce and are listed in the search engines, significantly increasing your Web site’s overall traffic.”

A web site is a worldwide advertisement that runs 24/7. For the price of one print ad, or one-tenth of a 30 second commercial, you can have a solid web site designed and running every single minute of every single day. Show a company how a few thousand dollars invested in a domain name & a web site now can translate into 100 years of sales and effective promotion, and they will all be scrambling to get in line.

Most companies, even small ones, will tell you that having a web site is no longer an option. It offers the business owners the opportunity of having potential customers view their products or services day or night, without needing to an outlay of huge sums of money.

But then, many small and medium sized businesses that are already online have poor or difficult sounding domain names. Names that they would readily change in an instant if they had the right domain name. So there will always be people and companies who will be looking at the domain resale market for a better name for their business. This is key.

When Anysoft, a Massachusetts company, acquired any.com for $30,000, their vice-president, Emily Shain, said it was worth the money because the domain name was such a vital marketing tool that would help customers find them easily.

If you are at the right place at the right time with the right name, you could find yourself pocketing some nice cash.

Even governments are getting in on the act. The New Zealand government shelled out NZ$ 1 million for newzealand.com. As a result, there was understandable criticism in the NZ parliament over the purchase as being a waste of tax payers money.

What was the government’s response? Mark Burton, the NZ Tourism Minister had this to say, “There is no question that this domain will provide an invaluable portal for… commercial entry into New Zealand for those interested in tourism, commerce, and industry.

The South African Government offered US$10 million for southafrica.com. It has also been reported that korea.com was sold for US$5 million to True Net, Korea’s largest Internet service provider.”

Author, Tariq Ghafoor writes, “I feel that there’s still reason for optimism in the domain aftermarket but in order to profit there’s a crucial need to alter one’s perception and strategy just like our brethren have been forced to do in other web-based businesses.”

It’s true. The heady days of the domain gold rush has seen its final sunset. We are seeing shifting trends in the arena. To cope with the changes, a domain speculator needs to see himself as a domain entrepreneur and begin to organize his domain names and increase their value and prepare them for prospective buyers.

Finding and Registering the Perfect Domain

No matter what you do a large number of your customers will find you through the internet. It is important for businesses to maintain a good online presence. Here is how to choose, register, host and renew your domain name in a timely and effective fashion.

This starts with the name you choose for the website. A domain name is any combination of letters and numbers followed by .com, .net, .TV, .cc, .biz or other top-level domain designations. It is the kernel of the URL, or Uniform Resource Locator. Within this URL, about.com is the domain name.

Most companies use .com or .net, but you can try more appropriate names like TV. For furniture for television rooms or .biz for a more casual image. However, some domain names (i.e. .edu and .mil) are restricted to specific organizations. Some newer top-level domains (such as .cc) are not widely familiar.

There are millions of active domain names which presents a problem as your ideal name may have already been registered. Fortunately, there are ways that you can make this situation work if you can’t get yourcompanyname.com.

1) Conceptualize: The irrigation company Aqua-Tech registered watermylawn.com. If you offer or fulfill a specific experience or need, turn it into an imaginative domain name.

2) Add words. The Spencer Company, an office furniture and accessories business, owns buyspencer.com. Adding “buy” or “try” before your domain name makes it more unique and

A domain name suggestion service such as the one VeriSign offers may be another solution. You feed in service keywords (including your business name and other important business concepts) and it automatically offers domain name suggestions.

Registering a Domain Name

In earlier Web days, individuals and businesses registered domain names with the registry service Network Solutions, and then transferred the hosting rights to a hosting provider. Fortunately, Network Solutions is no longer the only accredited registrar so the process is easier and shorter.

If you go to almost any Web hosting company – like GoDaddy, SiteGround or Yahoo! Web Hosting – you’ll notice an embedded search box on the main page that lets you see if the domain name you want is available. If it is, the hosting company can register it for you directly. The hosting company notifies you when the domain name is active, and warns you when you need to renew.

There are also hundreds of other companies that act as registrants and hosts for domain names. You can use them to register a domain name and host the domain on your own server(s). However, most businesses can’t afford the costs of hosting their own Web presence, which is usually handled by a hosting specialist on your behalf.

Note that there are unreliable companies among the hundreds of companies legally qualified to register a domain name on your behalf. Be certain to research your registration/hosting company of choice before committing to it.

Renewing Your Domain Name

Renewing your domain name is NOT trivial. Failing to renew your domain name, can result in a takeover by someone. There is nothing as frustrating as watching an Internet squatter hijack your domain name because you were too distracted to renew it.

Thankfully, it’s easy to prevent problem by instructing your hosting company to automatically renew your domain name every year. Despite this, know when your domain name registration expires, and remain extra vigilant at this time.

Making your domain name a company trademark or otherwise protected intellectual property, means you’ll be less susceptible to domain name hijacking.

What is a Domain Name Reseller?

Many people often think about the idea of becoming a domain reseller as being a complicated procedure when in fact the whole process is rather simple. The term reseller refers to a company or individual who purchases goods/services with the intention of selling them on as opposed to consuming or using them. This is usually done with the intention of making a profit.

Domain resellers are a perfect example of the definition of the term reseller domains. Resellers are individuals or companies who act as agents for ICANN accredited registrars. They either sell for commission or to make a profit. Domain name resellers are companies or individuals selling their own domain names. It is important that domain resellers are not confused with speculators. These speculators purchase many domain names with the intention of holding them and selling them at some future time for a high profit, where as reseller, by the very nature of their business are pretty much retailers.

Reselling domain names is a low cost way to enter the domain name market. If you are hoping to purchase reseller domain names or if you are hoping to become a domain reseller then it is important that you approach the situation via ICANN. ICANN are the international body that regulates the domain industry and it requires accredited companies to have certain levels of assets. Once a company is an accredited provider, they have access to lower cost registrations.

If you are hoping to become a domain name reseller you will need to have a reseller hosting account with a hosting company. You can then host all of your domains on that account as well as sell domains to other people. You can get your secondary accounts through internet marketing or offline marketing strategies.

An example of when it makes perfect sense to become a domain reseller is when you are a web designer or a web hosting company. Becoming a domain reseller holds great business potential. Whether you’re a web designer, developer or search marketing service, or you’re looking to establish your own domain management service, you could benefit from the help of an established provider.

Due to the recent increase in domain reseller companies more and more people are now turning to reseller domain companies; however, as previously mentioned, it is highly important that you opt for a domain reseller company who is ICANN accredited. This is because UK based ICANN registrars are trusted names in domain reselling who provide a number of support services. ICANN accredited registrars provide low wholesale prices, exceptional customer service, and state-of-the art IT infrastructure. This means you will be provided with the service and savings that you depend on to confidently become a reseller of domains.

Whatever your reason or need for using a domain reseller company it is important that you find a domain reseller that is best suited to your business or individual needs. Also remember to opt for a domain reseller company or business who is an ICANN accredited registrar.

Picking the Right Domain Name For Your Website

Picking the right domain name for your website is an important first step in creating a successful website. First off, for those of you brand new to the whole website thing, a domain name is what you type in to the box at the top of your browser when you want to go to a site (www.rebaterabbit.com is a domain name). There are a couple things to consider when choosing your domain name.

Your domain name should represent who your company is and what it sells or provides. A domain name must be at least two characters long and it can’t include characters like $,%,&, etc. However, dashes and underscores are allowed in domain names.

Branding is as important to websites as it is to any other type of business You have to make sure that your domain name is catchy and can easily be remembered by people. Think of your domain name as the persona of your business. Being remembered is the goal of every company no matter what type of business you are in, so the catchier and more memorable your domain name is the easier it will be to remember.

With your domain name you need to create and fulfill expectations. By that I mean when someone hears your domain name they should immediately be able to tell what your site has to offer and what type of content they should expect to find. A website that is great at this is careerbuilder.com you can tell exactly what that is about. It is not impossible to be memorable without that though. Amazon.com took a little bit more branding to tell people what it was about, but I’d say they were slightly successful at that.

To coincide with this is the typeability of your domain name. Make sure it is short so people can type it in fast. Imagine if walmart.com was thebiggestretailstoreintheworld.com…would you type that in or go to another website?

It is important to pick a memorable top level domain (TLD). A TLD is the extension at the end of your sites name like .com, .org, .net, .biz, .info, etc. If at all possible find a .com name because they are the most memorable. However, if you can’t find a .com name that fits your company don’t be afraid to go to .org or .net because these TLD’s should not hurt your direct traffic too bad. Try to avoid other TLD’s if at all possible, if not pick the one that relates closest to your website.

Another important aspect of choosing a domain name is it’s search engine optimization (SEO) value. SEO is the process of getting up to the top of search engine’s organic search. Search engines look at domain names to help to determine what your website is about. Having keywords in your domain name that relate to the service or product you are selling can dramatically increase the amount of traffic you get to your site through search engines. When people search for a keyword and that keyword is in your domain name the search engine will see your website as one that can answer the query, so your site will show up at the top of that search result.

To get a domain online you must register it at an ICANN certified domain registrar. The most popular of which is GoDaddy.com. Registering a domain name costs very little to do, as low as $2. Tip: don’t register your domain name at the same company that is hosting your website just in case problems with your hosting arise you don’t have to worry about your domain name.

The internet has been around for enough time now that finding domain names has become somewhat tough. You can check the Whois database, which is a database of all registered domain names, at almost any domain registrar. My favorite site to check is whois.net to check domain names. If you know your business well enough and give it some creative thought you can come up with a domain that is catchy, tells the user what to expect, and has keywords in it.

Why You Are Wasting Your Time Without Your Own Internet Domain Name

Today more than ever having your own domain name is an absolute must for many reasons. In this article I reveal some of them. Keep in mind there are many more. And today domain names are available all over the web for a very reasonable fee. The prices have come way down over the past few years. There is absolutely no excuse if you are truly serious about your online business not to have your own domain name.

Imagine for a moment you are surfing the web, and you run across a link with a headline promising that if you click it, you will discover a way to earn a phenomenal income. So, you go ahead and click it and stand by to be taken to the associated web site. Here’s a small part of the psychology that goes on in 89% of web surfers minds as they look for helpful web sites.

Using the example above, lets pretend the person is going to your web site and when they get there they see it’s an address that looks kind of like this…

http://members.aol.com/usersname/index.htm

What’s the very first thought the little voice says to them in their head? They hear a very loud voice saying…

“This web site is not making any money cause the owner can’t generate enough money to purchase their own domain name!”

It doesn’t matter if this is true or not. You could be doing very well with a non domain name but if the majority of people assume otherwise, think of all the business you will lose every day. I know this first hand and when I think about it, it makes we wish I had got my own domain name much sooner than I did. I used to have a small little web site hosted on AOL. It was two megs and I thought it was doing pretty well. Once I got my own domain name, my daily visits jumped dramatically and my orders more than quadrupled!

Our company web address now has a commanding presence on the web because we have our own domain name.

Without your own domain name people will not take you seriously. Having your own domain name also will allow you to have very professional email addresses such as… sales@WorldwideAdNetwork.com, or anything else you desire like staff@…, president@…., information@…. etc. Can you now start to see why this is?

So by now you should already realize how crucial it is for you to have your own Internet domain name. There is one more step needed before you sign up for a domain name. You will need to check to see if the name you want is already taken. One easy way to do it is to type in the name you want and see if it comes up as a valid Internet address. The other, and much more reliable method, is to conduct a WHOIS search. A WHOIS search will tell you if the domain name you want is available and if not who owns the Internet name. Anyone can very easily get their own web domain name. And today there are many hosting companies available to pick from.

A word to the wise about picking a domain name. Always try to come up with a domain name that is generic in nature and will not lock you into one certain type of business. You will discover new and interesting programs as you learn more about the Internet and you will want to include some of them on your web site. if the name of your site limited you to one certain type of business, it would confuse site visitors and you will lose business.

I of course have to let you in on another challenge you are up against. The “domain name entrepreneurs”, these are people who decided one day to sit and think of all the best possible domain names one might desire to own. Yes, you guessed it, they bought up tons of good names. Why? because they know Internet domain names are transferable. This means they can pay $70.00 for the name and then sit on it until someone comes along who wants it. Right again, the owner can sell the domain name for whatever amount they can get for it! There are many sites on the web that do this. These people always demand insane prices for these domain names as they know some of the really best names will generate tons of web traffic just on the name alone. Think about it.

Alright, so you know you need to come up with a name. Try to pick a name that is very easy to remember. Imagine you were telling someone in a hurry what the domain name is and you want to make sure they will remember it on their way home from a shopping mall for example in rush hour traffic. The best domain names are simple one or two word names. Ours is the name of our company. I chose it because the words are highly searchable. I’ve also found that if you r company name is one thing, and your web domain name is something else, some people will write their checks out to your domain name. Remember the web is full of new people learning!

Domain Name Appraisal Scam

I’ve had quite a few offers for my domain names over time. There is one kind of offer that I have received numerous times which I would like to warn my readers about. It is a domain name appraisal scam covered up as a domain name enquiry.

Basically what happens is a domain name appraisal company acts as a party interested in the purchase of your domain name. They put together an approach letter like the following email that I received for a domain name of mine:

Hello,

We are interested in xxxx.xxxx

It was listed in auction (your address was found via WHO IS).

Please submit your price for consideration.

Our company is involved in software development/support business. Now domain invetsing/reselling is just an additional direction of our investment strategy.

Looking forward to do business with you.

Regards,

After I received this letter, I replied with something like this “Thanx for the offer. I am planning to develop the domain name in question into a profitable website. However, I value the domain name at $2500, and I will sell it if an offer of that amount is made”.

The next email they sent went right for the juggular:

Hello,

$2500?

Ok.

However, before we buy the domain, we have to make sure that it is worth the amount that you claim.

It is nothing personal, we just want to be sure our investment is valuable. We have seen this post at a forum we frequent which shows a link to a reputable appraiser which you can use to appraise the domain.

Please follow that link to get the name appraised and once you appraise it, send us the appraisal certificate.

Once the appraisal is made, we will talk about making a deal.

Do you use escrow? We prefer it.

Regards,

Nice touch, they did not actually include the appraisal link in the email, but rather pointed me to a forum where they had previously posted their appraisal link. Also, notice the mention of escrow… of course they are concerned about the security of the transaction, there is nothing else on their mind :) . This domain name appraisal scam is very well planned and very well executed. They want to come across as geniune, and I bet a lot of people have falled for it. After all, a great offer for some of your domain names does not come along that often.

I replied that I value the domain name at $2500 and that I do not need a domain name appraisal company to appraise the domain name for me. They hounded me with another 3 or 4 emails begging me to do an appraisal before they gave up.

The moral of the story? Be careful about approaches for your domain name. Think about this – if you are interested in a domain name and you decide to write to the domain name owner to inquire about purchasing that domain name, are you really going to ask that domain name owner to pay for appraisal for their own domain name? I would think you will do your homework, find out how much that domain name is worth, after all, you are purchasing it because in your eyes that domain name is valuable, and only then will you make an offer. People who ask you to pay for appraisal for a domain name you own are one thing and one thing only – DOMAIN NAME APPRAISAL SCAMMERS – so be aware.

What is a Domain and How Do You Choose a Domain Name?

A domain is an address that users use to locate your website in the Internet. In other words, domain is a set of characters that associates your internet resource with the server where it is located.

The first thing the users see before even entering your website is its domain name. “www(dot)example(dot)com” is a good example of a domain name.

How to choose domain name? Choosing a right domain name is an important and challenging task. Why? Because it depends on the domain name you have chosen whether it is easy for the users, or potential visitors of your website, to remember this unique name. Hence, the shorter and the easier to pronounce the domain name, the better. Unfortunately, most of short domain names are already occupied, but this does not mean that they don’t exist at all. Moreover, these days not only short names but also good sounding sounds’ combination are getting popular.

For example, the Beyond Interactive news agency could not register the name “www(dot)beyond(dot)com” because it was not appropriate for the purpose while “www(dot)beyondinteractive(dot)com” was too long, and the user would have difficulties typing it leading to mistakes when entering the address. And the company decided to go for http://www.gobeyond.com which fully accords with the customer servicing standards of the company. When buying a domain name, the http://www.bluefountainmedia.com, “Blue Fountain Media” – professional web design company follows certain logic. Below we have listed 10 important advices to follow when choosing a domain name.

1. Domain name should not be too long.

2. Domain name should be easy to remember and to pronounce (for example, you may need to read it out over telephone).

3. Don’t use digits in the domain name unless this is absolutely necessary.

4. Consider a number of domain options and choose the one that better suits you (for example: you can find suitable name in the .com, .net, .org., .info zones or vis ccTLD – Country Code Top Level Domains such as “.us”, “.uk” or “.ca”.

5. Be careful combining two or more words, because you can end up with an ambiguous meaning (for example: Pen Island – “www(dot)penisland(dot)com” – Penis Land)

6. Check if the resulting domain name sounds fine.

7. The registrar company you apply to for a domain name must be well reputed. Pay due attention when choosing one.

8. Show your domain name to friends and colleagues, seek their opinion and see how people perceive it.

9. Don’t plan anything with regard to a domain name that is available at this moment thinking you will be able to register it at any time. The name can be occupied by someone else in a minute’s time.

10. Don’t use intermediaries’ services to register your domain.

Finding best domain name depends a lot on the name of your company, its profile, services it provides and other individual factors. However, the above rules are applied to everyone who wishes to buy a successful domain name in the internet.

“Blue Fountain Media” is a Professional New York Web Design Company located at Fifth Avenue. Blue Fountain Media was found at 2004 and since that time we attend a lot of the companies. Domain Name Registrars and How They Work

In the history of domain name registrars, a company called Network Solutions had the sole authorization to register domain names. Network Solutions was the only true domain name registrar. Now, things have changed! The domain name market is wide open for competition. There are several dozens of domain name registrars today.

What is a Domain Name Registrar?

A domain name registrar is a company that is allowed to directly access and modify the database of domain names that have been registered up to the current date. The database itself is maintained by a non-profit organization called Internic. Domain name registration and the industry itself are monitored by ICANN, an organization that is responsible for certifying companies as registrars and handling domain names, IP addresses, and domain name extensions.

A domain name registrar is required to pay a fee to Network Solutions for every registered domain name. This is a fixed fee for everyone. Then, the registrar can decide what to charge clients that register with them for purpose of profits and promotion.

Where the rates were once fixed at $70 per every two-year period, now companies may charge whatever they wish. Some charge by the year; others offer many types of domain name packages ranging from one to even ten years in duration.

Benefits of Registering with an Accredited Domain Name Registrar

There are several main benefits of registering your Internet domain name with an accredited domain name registrar. One, you’ll often find cheaper domain name registration prices because the registrar is buying domain names directly. Some companies are able to offer domain name registration for as low as $8.95 per year or better. Then, there are others who offer a free year or two with the purchase of Web hosting.

Two, you’ll know that you are registering your domain name with a reputable company. There are many “resellers” of domain names that are fly-by-night companies, and you might not be able to find them when it’s time to renew your domain name for the next term!

Three, you can benefit from the registrar accreditation itself. This reveals that the domain name registrar has been accredited by a federal government agency and is being monitored directly by Internic. Quick Tips on Choosing a Domain Name

Choosing a new domain name is a very simple task for most experienced internet network marketers but it can be a challenge for someone just starting out in business. Here are a few quick tips that will help to make the process a bit easier.

First, it is virtually impossible to do business on the internet without having at least one domain name. Even if your company provides you with some type of replicated web site, it is normally a good idea to acquire your own domain name and have it redirected to the company issued site.

One of the first questions that normally pops up is whether or not it’s mandatory to get a dot com (.com) domain name. Yes, there are plenty of successful marketers that use domain names that end in other extensions such as .net, .name, .biz, etc. However, dot com continues to dominant the marketplace and most of the experts still recommend that extension whenever possible. Basically, dot com has been branded into our subconscious to such a degree that even when you are clearly given a .net web address, we will instinctively type in dot com.

Next, when you are in the process of selecting a new name, there are a few things that you will want to keep in mind.

1. Choose a domain name that contains keywords that apply to whatever it is you are promoting.

2. Make sure that your domain name is easy to read when it is typed or written (stay away from excessive vowels).

3. Long and descriptive domains were once frowned upon but are now more readily accepted.

When you are ready to actually purchase your new domain name, picking the right registrar can be tough because there are literally thousands of them out there on the web. We recommend two that have served us well over the years and for two very different reasons.

GoDaddy.com domain names are one of our favorites because they have a good price and they are fast with redirects. Some companies take many hours, and often days, before your web site is “live” and pointing to another domain name. However, we have purchased new domains and had them repointing to our site of choice in just a matter of minutes with GoDaddy.com. So, if you are looking for speed and a quick redirect, we recommend GoDaddy.com.

Another company that we like and have been using for many years is Dotster.com domain names. Dotster has a very easy to use back office and it is great for anyone that is managing multiple domain names. The system will alert you whenever it’s time to renew a domain name and they also have many other features that you can use to make running your business easier. Ultimately, we like to keep our primary domain names secured through Dotster.com, and any redirect type domains are managed via GoDaddy.

If you are serious about marketing on the internet, learning the basics about buying and redirecting domain names is definitely a skill you will want to learn. Domain names are fairly inexpensive, simple to register, and equally simple to redirect. In the long run, a little creativity in choosing the right domain name can have a major impact on your new network marketing business.
