Domain names are becoming more and more valuable. How do you find out which domain names are still available to register?

If you want to buy a domain name as an investment, or for a web site, or because you have had an idea and want to reserve a likely name, then you need to find out what domain names are available.

There are three main ways of finding available domain names.

The first way is simply to type the domain name you want to check into the address field of your browser. This is handy if you already know the domain name you want, and just need to see if it is still free.

When you do this, you will either be taken to the site (meaning the domain is already registered and has a web site associated with it) or you will get a message like this – ‘Internet Explorer cannot display the web page’ or ‘Server not found’. This means that the domain name is most likely still free, though there is still a small chance the web site was simply not available due to server issues at that moment.

The second way of finding available domain names is the go to one of the domain name registrars, such as Godaddy, and type in the name you want there. You can use the prominent ‘Start a domain name search’ box for this. Within seconds, you will see if the domain is available to register.

If you don’t have an idea about the exact domain you want, you can also use services like Godaddy to help you. To do this, decide on the theme of the domain name you want. For example, if you wanted to own a domain name about the subject of baseball, then just type ‘baseball’ into the domain search field.

Of course, baseball.com was taken long ago, but Godaddy will suggest a series of available names you could register, such as easycollegebaseball.com, baseballsportstore.com and so on. You will also see currently registered domain names related to baseball which are up for sale, and their prices. These names may give you ideas – many hyphenated word combinations related to your theme will still be free and able to be registered. Remember that registering a completely new name is always cheaper than buying a currently registered domain name.

The third way to check available domain names is most useful if you want a ‘generic’ name which is not linked to any particular subject. Use a service like Godaddy and simply browse the domain names which are for sale there. This is known as the domain name aftermaket. You will be able to buy domains which are for sale, and to bid on expired domain names, or simply make an offer to the owner for a domain that you want.

Now see the available domain names – check my available domain names page to start looking for and finding the domain you want.

Are you about to give up hope on finding a good available domain name?

No worries, there is still an infinite number of available domains out there, its just a matter of finding them.

Recently some major web hosting companies have launched domain name suggestion engines that can give you hundreds of inspiring name ideas instantly. A few of them stand out by being significantly faster and user-friendlier than most:

Yahoo! Domain Name Suggestions – Link

Yahoo’s Domain Suggestions has an eye-catching ultramodern Web 2.0 feel. This search interface is done with Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) – the latest in web techniques for creating interactive web applications. You’ll notice that the pages are actually never reloaded when searcing. Page elements simply shift around softly, making the user experience dynamic and easy to use.

Lets say we need a name for an interior design site. Typing “interior design” to the search box produces the following results:

Not all of them are close to ideal, but there are a few that sound good and are actually quite search engine friendly – meaning that they contain the actual words people would be searching for. Note that you have to click on “See more” to view all results.

The speed of looking up over 100 domain names is simply astonishing – new results are returned in less than one second thanks to Ajax.

Click here to try it – Yahoo Domains Suggestion Engine

GoDaddy Domains Smart Search – Link

GoDaddy’s first set of results is for .com domains only, but later you can select other extenisions like .net, .info, .biz, .us etc.

We’ll try the interior design search once again.

Click on the See other domains like this link to view all suggestions.

GoDaddy offers various options to customize your domain search – add popular affixes or suffixes, include dashes in the name or use related keywords.

Click here to try it – GoDaddy Smart Search

MakeWords Domain Name Generator – Link

MakeWords is the one with most advanced features. Names can be created with random phonetic words, that sound like they would derive from English language. The popular affixes search is similar to Yahoo! and GoDaddy, with tens of different affix categories to choose from. The synonym search suggests similar keywords that can be combined with an extra affix of suffix.

There are links for checking the domain popularity, Google results and business name availability. Similar to Yahoo, this site also uses the Ajax interface.

At first it may all seem a bit overwhelming, but that is usually the case whan you have so many custom search options.

Click here to try it – MakeWords Name Generator

Good luck with your domain name search!

The domain name for your business is your online identity.

You should be very careful about choosing a domain name that is memorable, scores quite well with search engine listings, has a trust factor attached to it, and commands a brand value. A domain name is quite important for your business correspondences and emails. A long one can cause problems in communication, especially if the domain name seems complex. Here are some tips in choosing a well-meaning domain name that captures the essence of your brand image or business:

1. Keyword oriented or a unique domain name? If your website is going to have a crucial role to play in your business, then it is important to have an adequately researched keyword incorporated within the brand name. Use the most searched-for term in search engine queries, within your domain name. Prior to launching your online business, you should do some research through website tools to find out which keywords register the most number of traffic during a month. For example, if you want to make a website based on advising people, you will find that the keyword help is normally typed in the search engine query window a lot more frequently than the word aid. If your domain name includes targeted keywords, than you will get higher rankings in the search engines like Google and Yahoo. You should bear in mind that, apart from having the targeted keyword in your domain name, you should also have keywords in other parts of your site as well.

2. Use a company name only if you are famous: That is right. If your company name overwhelms the basic product name, then by all means go for the company name as your domain name. For example, people normally use the term Xerox rather than photocopy and if you are Xerox, then you should go for Xerox as a domain name because of the sheer popularity of the brand name. This is usually not the case, so using a keyword-rich domain name is a better move for most people. To be on the right side of balancing your business well, you should buy a set of two domain names, one that represents your business/brand name, and another that represents keywords or key phrases.

3. Keep your domain name short: The shorter your domain name, the more memorable it is. If your domain name has an every-day lingo, the better it is! More often than not, you may find that a simple two-word domain name is already taken. The alternative in this case, is to put a hyphen (-) to your targeted keyword and then add the other word. SEO experts are of the belief that hyphenating two or more words makes a long domain name more search engine friendly. The flip side is that people do not tend to write words with hyphens naturally, and there is a chance that if someone has recommended your site to a friend, the friend may find himself going to a competitor’s site. So one has to understand and undergo a lot of study while choosing a domain name. After all, it is one prominent thing that can dictate the flow of your business. Also, you should avoid putting numbers like 4 instead of for in your domain name. It will only lead to confusion.

4. Dot.com only: If you intend to have a website for commercial or business reasons, then by all means go for a website which ends in extension .com. The domain name companies will market other options like .org, .us, .net, etc. However, by all means try stick to .com for better mass appeal.

5. Register similar domain names: If you believe that in the future you are going to have a huge amount of people visiting your website through word-of-mouth advertising, then you should consider registering similar domain names that direct to your main URL (e.g. www.datinginformation.com and www.datinginfo.com). There are cyber-squatters who register domain names in the hope that they will be selling them for a profit to someone who really needs that domain name. Before they do this, you should register the domain names if you think that such a possibility can occur.

6. Be patient: You should not choose a domain name in minutes merely just to get it done and over with. A hasty decision may cost you a lot. It is better to invest time in research and arrive at the right kind of domain name. You should also discuss the comprehensibility and usage of the domain name with friends, neighbors and well wishers to find how simple and commonplace it really is.

Start with Domain Name Search Here

Let’s say that you’re creating a website for Barb’s Specialty Pet Products. Should the domain name be barbsspecialtypetproducts.com?

Perhaps, but don’t stop there. Having the right domain name, or domain names, can bring more traffic to your site.

Why more than one domain name?

One domain is all you need to set up a website. But with more domains directing to your site, you can have these additional benefits:

- Bring site visitors who type variations of your domain name
- Acquire traffic that might otherwise go to your competition
- Harness the marketing power of keyword domains

Your primary domain name

If it’s feasible, use your business or brand name in your primary domain. People will remember it and associate it with your business. Also consider the following factors when choosing your primary domain.

Domain name extensions

Should your primary domain end with .com, .net, or .biz, or with a country-specific extension such as .ca or .co.uk?

If your website is aimed at people in a specific country, having a country-specific domain can help:

- Site visitors will recognize right away that the business has a presence in the country of the extension. They may therefore be more comfortable buying from you.

- Some country-specific search results include sites with the relevant country-specific domain extension even if the site isn’t hosted in that country.

On the other hand, if you’re targeting an international audience, a country-specific domain could work against you. People from outside the country of the extension may be less inclined to buy if the business looks foreign to them.

If you want to attract both people within your country and those in other countries, have both. Each domain could direct to the same site, with each audience seeing the domain intended for them. For country-specific search results, the primary domain should be the country-specific one.

Chances are that the .com domain you want is already taken. If you use the .net or .biz version, you risk having potential site visitors go to your .com competition instead. Be sure to use the full domain name on all promotional material to reduce this risk.

Domain name length

A short domain is easier to remember, it has less risk of being mistyped, and it’ll fit easily on your business cards and correspondence.

Conversely, if a short name doesn’t represent your business, it’s more difficult for people to remember. The short names you like may already be taken anyway.

If your business name is up to three easy-to-spell words, it’ll probably work as a domain name. For a longer business name, the initials or just one or two words may be easier than remembering a combination of words.

Secondary domain names

Secondary domains directing to your site are for online use:

- For people who type your primary domain name incorrectly
- For people who search for your products or services online

Typing and spelling variations

How many ways can people spell and type your business name?

barbsspecialtypetproducts.com
barbs-specialty-pet-products.com
barbspecialtypetproducts.com
barbsspecialitypetproducts.com
barbsspecialitypetproducts.com
barbspecialtyproducts.com
barbspecialtyproduct.com

Hyphens aren’t recommended for your primary domain. When people tell others about your site, they’re likely to omit the hyphens. They may also forget to type them.

For secondary domains, hyphens make long domains easier to read. Each word stands out when people see your domain. However, domains such as buy-keyword-product-now.com make some people view hyphenated domains, especially those with more than one hyphen, as spam-like.

Having the words in domains separated may help some search engines recognize keywords. With Google, though, hyphens don’t make any difference.

Consider all of these variations for secondary domain names:

- With and without hyphens
- Different ways of spelling some words
- Singular and plural versions of nouns
- Extensions with .com and .net as well as a country-specific extension if relevant

What people search for

If you want to find the website for Time magazine, you might do a search for it, or you might try typing in time.com. If you do the latter, you’ll find yourself at the Time site.

This type of search behavior extends to generic words too. Searching for dog collars? Try dogcollar.com, for example, and you’ll be redirected to dogidcollar.com. Do you want life insurance? Lifeinsurance.com redirects to nmfn.com (and so does northwesternmutualfinancialnetwork.com).

While having keyword domain names may not draw a lot of site visitors, using them is a technique to consider.
How to use more than one domain

Set up your website with your primary domain, and use that domain on your correspondence and with your customers.

Point secondary domains to your site using URL forwarding (also called domain forwarding, domain redirect, or URL redirect). To have the secondary domain appear in the browser, use domain masking. You can set up these features when you log in to your account with your domain registrar (if your registrar offers these services).

With domains that are simply variations of your primary domain, you can expect additional traffic just from having set up these domains. With domains that contain keywords, you can get more from them by using them to list your site in online directories. When these domains appear in search results, searchers will see the keywords.

The next step

Once you decide on the available domains that you want, register them immediately. They might not be available tomorrow.

If you don’t already have a business name, you’ll find it easier to market your business online if you choose a primary domain and a business name together. If your first choice for a business name doesn’t work well with any available domains, consider a business name that you can easily market with an available domain. Once you’ve registered that domain name and your business name, register secondary domains and put them to use.

Is it worth registering multiple domains for one site? That depends on your site, but any variations that you don’t register will be available for competitors to register and use. If a domain is valuable to a competitor, it’s valuable to you.

A popular way of producing a domain name is by adding an affix to it. Names like besttoys.com or buy-adventure-books.com are very easy to remember. And since they contain the actual words people are searching for, they are search-engine friendly.

We have carefully selected hundreds of affixes that contain such words. You can easily combine these words with your own keywords to find available domains. Try it with the MakeWords name suggestions generator.

Naturally, it is much harder to find names with keywords like home, travel or pets. In such cases you have an option to:

use synonyms

check the insert a hyphen checkbox to produce names like home-abc.com or home-tips.com

type in an optional Extra Prefix (like my or the) or Extra Suffix (s for plurals, d for past tense etc.) to get results like mytravelabc.com or petwins.com.

Since there are different words for different needs, we have sorted them to separate categories. The Positive Thinking category for example contains the names that are meant to provoke positive thoughts - like best, free, super, win. The Shopping category contains affixes usually used in e-commerce websites, like buy, savings, value, discounts and so on.

Finding the perfect name is an important step every entrepreneur is facing when starting a new business.

Having a brandable and memorable name is the foundation for a successful venture; not having it could cost you an arm and a leg in marketing costs, but no-one still remembers it.

With more than 50 million domain names already registered, you’d get a serious headache brainstorming for names and looking them up in the Whois database one-by-one, only to find that all the sensible ones are already taken. Good domain names are still out there, its just not that easy to find them.

We have built something that can save you a lot of valuable time – www.makewords.com domain name
search and suggestions generator. Some clever algorithms and language rules in MakeWords deliver hundreds of
new unique name ideas instantly. In the beginning it may take a couple of minutes of getting used to it, but
once you do, you’ll save hours naming for your future products or brands.
We even have pages where you can find a name for your pet
, baby, roleplay
character or for your AIM or MSN screen name

Good luck!
