Ever considered speculating on Domain Names? Or maybe failed to turn a profit from a Name you had high hopes for? Well don’t beat yourself up, just stay with me because I’d like to share a few thoughts that I know will interest you.

You’re already aware that obscene amounts of money are made from Domain Names. You know that every month names once purchased for as little as $12, are changing hands for amounts ranging from $25 (100% Profit!) up to 5 figures sums, and frequently six or even seven figure fortunes. And I’m not referring to sales of websites, just Domain Names on their own. (Not only dot com’s, but also .net’s, .org’s, .info’s, even .biz names, plus many national extensions like .us, .de etc.)

Now, lets digress, does the following sound like anyone you Know?

He dedicates an hour to thinking up a domain name that’s bound to appeal. Armed with credit card, he then eagerly searches the web for a Domain Registration Service.

Discovering the domain name is already registered, he quickly comes up with several less appealing variations, at last finding one that’s available to register. Cost $15. Job done, he sits back to contemplate a massive profit, expected imminently!.

Days drift by, then weeks, then months. No one materialises with an offer. Not to be deterred, he gets pro-active and offers the domain on eBay for $999.95 (Worried that his asking price maybe too low). One week – plus one $6 bid – later, scratches head, rubs chin and wonder’s, what next?

Staying positive, he reads a few domain articles, but is now developing a sneaky suspicion that either this Domain Name business aint all it’s cracked up to be, or some vital knowledge is missing. Decides to put Domain Speculation on hold, and turns his attention to other matters.

OK. Maybe our apprentice speculator was a little more scientific about things, but you get the message.

I’ve owned close to 1000 Domain Names and, to be frank, I got it badly wrong. No – lets be honest – horribly wrong! In fact, it’s cost me an horrendous amount of cash. Only recently have I begun to see where I went wrong.

I now realize that the whole process is one demanding a professional strategy, e.g:

Decide whether to acquire for income, short term re-sale, or income plus capital appreciation.

Buy Domain Names with just a few, carefully selected, niche’s in mind.

Use key-word searches to generate Name ideas that truly reflect what those in your chosen niche/s are seeking.

Choose whether to search for unregistered names (hugely time consuming when it comes to finding quality names, most of which have been registered) or look to buy in the secondary marketplace, where you’ll pay more, but maybe stand a better chance of acquiring a valuable asset.

Locate the right Registration Service. (Low Registration Fees, plus availability of additional services you may want to utilise)

Know what you’ll do with your Domain Name once you’ve acquired it, e.g:

# Hold on to it

~ Park it.

# Lease it (A much overlooked option).

~ Create a website to promote it, and simultaneously generate some revenue.

# Offer it immediately to prospective buyer’s active in the niche you’ve chosen.

~ Offer it on a Secondary Market Site (like Sedo)

# ‘Talk up’ the name on Domain Forums to try and generate interest.

~ Offer it to a Domain Name Portfolio Owner. (i.e. a corporate entity that control thousands of Names).

# Offer it on a specialist or general Auction Site.

And that’s just the beginning. You could seek out and buy recently expired domains, to exploit the traffic they still get. Or how about using services that specialise in catching ‘dropping names’, i.e. where owners no longer want to renew registration (or have forgotten their domains are due to expire).

There are some great publications, ebooks etc., that tell you exactly what to do to accomplish the above. There’s excellent, inexpensive and easy to use software and web services to make the whole process of locating names faster, slicker and – potentially – more profitable.

(TIP: Even if you think you don’t need these publications, tools or resources, at least check out the ‘sales spiel’ used by the Merchants who promote them. This ‘spiel’ will often let slip some ‘top tactics’ used by the Pro’s, or reveal cunning strategies and little known facts you can then use to your advantage.)

The good news is that, when it comes to domain names, there are many avenues to explore and exploit.

Don’t give up on making money from domain names, just start thinking smarter, and get the results you deserve!

Choosing a good domain name can help you in your business. In this article, we shall go through 5 tips on how to choose a good domain name.

Tip 1: Choose a Meaningful Domain Name

If you are selling health supplements, you should choose the domain name “healthsupplements.com” instead of “ilovepizza.com” for obvious reason. Let say a person is looking for vitamin C pills; he is more likely to visit “healthsupplements.com” instead of “ilovepizza.com”.

Choosing a meaningful domain name will also help you in your search engine ranking. For example, if your domain name is “healthsupplements.com” and your webpage is also optimized (optimized means your webpage title, meta tags, keywords and content are relevant to one another) with the term health supplements, you will have a better ranking for the term health supplements.

Tip 2: Length of a Domain Name

Should you choose a short or long domain name? Most people may argue that a short domain name is better than a long domain name. Well, I agree. A shorter domain name is usually easier to remember. Of course, it depends on the situation.

For example, “IAmADatingCoach.com” is a better choice compared to “IAADC.com” since the former is easier to remember. Yet, you won’t want to choose “IAmADatingCoachWhoHasTaughtThousandsOfStudentsSuccessfully.com”. People won’t remember such a long domain name and even if they do, it would be a chore to type.

Tip 3: Avoid Trademark Names

You should avoid domain name that looks too similar to terms like eBay and Amazon. Registering these domain names can get you into trouble. You may be forced to sell the domain name. In the worst case scenario, you may even be sued. If you are unsure, it is always a good idea to consult a lawyer, especially if you are planning to start a long term lucrative business.

Tip 4: Try Not To Use “_”

If possible, try not to register a domain name with hyphen. Imagine you have a domain name “eat_pizza.com”. There is a very high possibility your potential customer will end up in “eatpizza.com” instead. Most people don’t type hyphen in the url.

Tip 5: Use .com Whenever Possible

“.com” is the most popular domain name extension. Most people will try .com first whenever they are searching for a website. Unless your website has a special purpose, try to register a .com.

Special Case:

If you are in education, then you may want to register a .edu extension. If your site is geared towards providing information, then .info may be a good choice. However, in most cases, a .com will be a good choice.

All right, so you are creating your own website and you need to pick a domain name. How to you pick a good domain name? Does it even matter what your domain name is? Will you choose a .com, .net, .org, .biz? Which one best suits you and your business?

How do other businesses choose a good domain name? Why do some domain names become so easily memorable while others just seem to not be there at all? What makes a domain name memorable?

Why Does A Good Domain Name Matter?

It is vital to your website and business to have a good domain name. Having a good domain name is just as important as your business name, logo, and possibly even more important. First you have the choice of the actual domain name, such as Yahoo, Google, or eBay, for example. Although these domain names do not seem to match the websites or businesses in any way, they work because of brand name. If you tell people to go look something up on Google they know to type in http://www.google.com or to simply type Google into their favorite search engine. People know Google is a great search engine. It has become a household name because of their choice of the domain name, and successful advertising and promotional campaigns.

Your domain name needs to match your business well. You can choose a simple name that immediately lets people know what the website will be about before they even get there, such as Wikipedia. Since it sounds like encyclopaedia, people assume it is just that before they even get to the website, and it is.

You also have the choice of creating or making up your own name. It could be anything, and does not have to be a real word. However, as a general online business rule, your domain name should be the same as your business name.

Sometimes it is best to search available domain names on a web hosting website so you can see what is out there that is up for the taking. Think about whether you want your website domain name to end with a .com, .net, and the other many available endings.

Secrets Of A Catchy Domain Name -

Your domain name has to be catchy. People need to be able to remember it, pronounce it and write it with ease. The shorter your domain name, the better. People will have a difficult time remembering longer domain names. Yahoo is easy to remember. It has only five letters in it. It is like yelling Yahoo!. That’s why people remember it so easily.

Catchy domain names are straight forward, to the point and short. Some are humorous. Some remind people of something else. Some are controversial. Some are just plain silly and make people laugh, but they remember it.

The more catchy your domain name is the more likely it is that you will have more website visitors. Think carefully about what you want for your domain name before you choose it.

It’s goodbye from me

That’s it folks

The domain name is the most important source of identity in the internet. Not only does it provide your website with a name, it is also a great means for you to make money with. There are some steps to be adapted to make success through a domain name like doing research.

Find out which products are and are not selling on the market today, and for how much. Visit prominent domain resale and discussion sites like DomainState for some ideas. The next step lies in choosing the right domain name. Choose a name that is as short and simple as possible with minimum words. Avoiding separators in the domain name and buying generic product category names are great ideas to be remembered. Using a keyword suggestion tool also tracks the popularity of a search term to help you choose a keyword.

There are some hunting domain tools available in most registrars that helps you find out if your desired domain is available. An example is the Instant Domain Search tool. However make it a point to choose the right registrar that supplies you with the right support.

Choose coupon codes which bring you discounts and provide a great way of buying domains without having to pay full price. The domain related forums offer disclose coupon codes for your benefit. There are basically no real market price for your domains as all the sales follow the willing buyer and willing seller principle. You can charge higher prices for domain names that are most sought after. Use the help of past sales, professional appraisals and free appraisals to determine the rate for your domain names.

While waiting for the sale of the domain, you can either park or develop the domain. While parking, you can earn some minimal income when compared to developing domain names. You can also consider advertising on your domain by posting your listing on domain forums like eBay or Sedo. Make sure you describe the domain with a compelling argument on why it is worth spending the money on the domain.

Basically we can category the domain name in 2 big group, and they are keyword domain and branding domain. Some people might get confuse when come across with this problem. The problem is the wen owner should go for keyword or branding domain for his / her web site. As we know, domain name is very important, because a better domain name can get better sale and more profit.

When you want to choose a domain name, the first problem you might facing is what type of domain name you should use? it is keyword domain or brand domain? You want the internet user to remember your website because of your domain name or ranking at the search engine is more important?

Brand Domain

You will found interesting is, a lot of well known and successful websites do not use keyword as their domain name. These online businesses have chosen to go with a completely original domain, and brand it. A few success examples like Google, Yahoo!, Amazon, Monster, and eBay. These companies are successful because of their company brand was consistent and not because keywords got them to the top. Consumer recognize their brand, because of the quality of service or product they provided. They feel justified, and likely to buy from them. However, to build a brand take serious work and large amount of resource. You need time to build it.

Keyword Domain

A keyword domain is a domain chosen to take advantage of search engine traffic. By choosing a domain that matches a keyword search, we are able to rank higher for targeted keywords and thereby benefit from added traffic and more potential for sales. For example if you are selling toy from China then you may choose something like “chinatoy.com”. The companies who are success in using keyword as their domain name like Search.com and Job.com. From these two success examples, you can found that they are using single word as their keyword. But it seem difficult to get single keyword domain, that is short and relevant to your industry obviously that would be better, and I doubt you’ll ever to get one unless you are ready to shell out thousands or perhaps millions just for the domain name.

So, which one should you go for? a brand based domain or keyword domain? For me, your decision is much depending on your business plan. If you web business will be used once by the visitor, and then most likely never used again, then keyword domain seem more logical. But if the return visit is very important for your business, then a brand based domain sound more helpful.

Furthermore, If you have a large offline advertising budget and the budget necessary to brand your company, then I will recommend you should go for brandable domain. If, on the other hand, you have a limited budget, I prefer you choose a keyword domain and let the search engines bring the customers to you.

If you are starting a new eCommerce internet business, one question immediately pops into mind: what name should I choose? Have you heard of the saying in property, "location, location, location"? Most associate buying property with choosing the right location and it may mean that you make or lose money. Your e-commerce domain name is no different.

Keep It Simple And Easy To Remember

Domains – Most customers who look for a website want to remember something that is associated with the product or service you are offering. Unless you have a lot of money to spend on advertising like eBay or Amazon your best bet is to choose a domain name that represents your products and services. Use simple and easy to remember words that are spoken often by your customers. For example, your eCommerce business might be selling racing bikes so consider the domain names: racingbikes.com or roadracingbikes.com. Try to avoid names like joesracingbikes.com or smithsracingbikes.com even if your company is called that. We want to make sure your domain name is easy to remember and captures the widest scope of customers.

Don’t Be Fancy
Try to make sure you choose domain names with the correct spelling and to use short hand words. I have seen some domain names like racingbiks.com or rcingbikes.com. These are words we may know when we are sending a text via SMS but when it comes to marketing your eCommerce business it is not worth shortening your domain name for people to try to remember.

It’s very common to see onlinebusiness.com get shortened to onlinebiz.com, which is not very good for search engine optimization and other keyword link strategies that I will discuss about.

Choosing Dot Com Or Another Extension?
According to Verisign, over 45% of total domain registrations have a .com extension. Keep in mind that shoppers will more than likely remember a.COM extension while shopping online and this will have an impact on how successful your business will be. In any business I set up the first extension I look for is a .com, which allows me to expand and market my business globally even if I am not a business located in the United States.

Domain Name Friendly For Search Engines
You may have realised my emphasis on choosing a domain name that is related to your products and services and also my encouragement to keep it simple. The reason why I recommend you look at choosing a domain name related to your products and services is to allow for search engines to easily find your website. Having the right keywords that relate to your eCommerce business in your domain name can play a vital role. For example if my domain name was racingbikes.com and I went online to search for “racing bikes”, more than likely your website will come up at the top because it is the most relevant to the key words searched. This has already conquered half of your battle. If you had chosen rcingbikes.com, then you would be spending a great amount of time and resources trying to optimize your website.

A question I get asked quite a lot is what happens if the domain name I want for my eCommerce business is taken? Since there are billions of websites on the Internet, it would be common for single and double word domain names to be already taken. Though don’t sweat, because you can still create a domain name from other keywords in niche markets. Let’s take for example the keywords “racing bikes” again. Since racingbikes.com is taken, let us dig further and choose a brand of bikes you want to focus on. Shimano is a popular and reputable brand: so let us choose shimanoracingbikes.com. You could repeat this with many other brands and use that to create a lot of domain names that would be directed to your website. Alternatively being more generic you can choose topracingbikes.com or leadingracingbikes.com. Which ever keywords are dominate in your market, try to find out which ones would be profitable for your eCommerce business and search to see if the domain name is available.

Checking If Your Domain Name Is Available
There are many domain name registers in the market but I don’t recommend you buy domain names from them as they don’t provide good support.

How To Register Your Domain Name
The company that I use to register my domains is Namecheap and I can highly recommend them. They are very affordable and provide 1 year of private registration as of writing this. It also allows me to keep my business address and phone details private at no additional cost. A lot of top Internet marketers use them because they provide good support and also they refer any spam complaints to the web host.

The process in registering your domain is a very simple process. Once you have decided on a domain name, check to see if it is available and then register it through Namecheap. Once that is completed, you will receive a couple of notification emails with your registration certificate and you will be the owner of the domain. In the next few posts I will explain to you how to setup your hosting services and link them to your domain name.

Choosing the right domain name for your website is crucial as it affects everything from visitors' perceptions to internet marketing. Often time a good internet business fails for their domain name. To avoid the mistakes, here is a guide for you.

A domain name is a web address or URL pointing to your website. Visitors will recognize your website based on the domain name. Therefore choosing the right domain name is utmost importance as it will affect the success or failure of your website. It involves website branding when picking the right domain name too. For example what will you first think of when people mention ebay.com? Auction. How about Digg.com? Dig stuff out from the internet.

Here are a few criterion I follow whenever I make a domain purchase. It is helpful for my website branding as well as marketing. If you intend to have your own domain name, here is the right guide.

Firstly you should pick a domain that best describes your website. What is your entire website about? It is a money making blog or celebrity news website? Or html coding guide website? You domain name should describe what your website does. You should not use money.com for your money making blog but you should use something like makemoneyonline.com.

Secondly will be the keyword. If you are doing internet marketing you should know the impotency of keywords in your URL. This is because search engines and websites do send out robots or spider to crawl you website. The robots and spiders will justify what your website does from the contents and the URL. Therefore if you are targeting a keyword, try to slip in the keyword into your URL. That does make your website more relevant to the keyword.

Thirdly, your domain should be as short as possible. By this I mean you should use a domain with maximum 4 phrases. This is because when the domain gets longer, it will be messy and difficult to be typed and remembered by others. I will just navigate to other website when I miss type an alphabet in the long domain because I do not bother to check it one by one. It is hurting my eyes. However, if more words are needed to describe your entire website, you can go ahead but try everything to avoid long domain.

Fourthly, besides emphasizing on the short domain, your domain should also be easy to remember and type. A good domain is always easy to type and remember yet a short and meaningful one. You should not just put ghk.com because it is short. It should carry a meaning, yet short and easy to type. For exmaple hostgator hosting, their domain is short yet meaningful. The name fits with their motto which says “we eat up competitor”.

Fifthly, if your desired domain is already taken, you can always add hyphens in between the words. But do not use space in your domain. I bet it is not allowed though. Space will be understood by http as %20 which bring no meaning to human. It will only cause your domain looks ugly and messy.

With these 5 criterion it will not be difficult to identify your ideal domain for your website. Remember a good domain always strikes in internet marketing. You should spend more time in coming out with a better domain because every following things you do will lead you back to the name your chose. Be sure that your domain is presentable and professional.

When starting an online presence, the first step is always to register a domain name. The author discusses some simple guidelines to help readers in choosing the best one for their sites.

“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

When starting an online presence, the first and most important step you will have to take is to register your own domain name. In the online world, your domain name serves two purposes – name and address. Your domain name can serve as your site name. It will also direct your visitors to the contents of your site or someone else’s. Hence, it is very important that you choose one properly.

If you are planning to launch a personal web site or one for your business, choosing a domain name like yourname.com or yourbusiness.com would be the logical step. However, there will be instances when the domain of your choice isn’t available and you will have to pick another one. In doing so, please take note of the simple guidelines below.

If you already have a theme for your site, it would help if the domain name contains words that are related to the site’s content. This makes it easier for you to market your site. Potential visitors will know what they’re getting into when clicking a link to your site.

You may also choose domain names that are short and easy to remember. A domain that is short and can be told in a few syllables will be easy to remember. It also helps if the name has a twist or if it sounds rather funny. Good examples of short domain names include one-word internet giants like Google, Amazon and Ebay.

You may also choose simple, ordinary words like business, computers or laptops. Although a number of these domains have already been registered, be on the lookout as they could easily bring in instant traffic for any site. This will be very useful if you are going to use any of those PPC programs for parked pages or even selling the domain name in the future. As an example, business.com was sold a few years ago for millions of dollars!

Remember that these days getting your own domain name no longer costs an arm and a leg. Gone are the days when companies would charge you 30 dollars or more. You now have a choice of sites that can register your domain names for less than ten dollars and still provide you with lots of free stuff. Some companies are even offering domain names at peanut prices if coupled by other purchases like web hosting. Of course, this is great news for anyone considering building a web site or purchasing a domain name as an investment.

Do you need a domain name for your business? Here are just
a few ways of purchasing one.

1. Think Up and Register Your Own Original Domain Name

Think up your own original name and register it at a domain
name registrar. Although this seems obvious, many people
feel that all the good domain names are already taken.

It is true that it won’t be easy to come up with a suitable
name that has not already been registered. However, with
some careful thought, you may come up with your own original
domain name.

For example, I once was going to buy a certain domain name
but someone else beat me to it. Upon reflection, I came up
with a comparable (if not better) domain name myself and
simply registered it.

2. Buy Already Expired Domain Names

Sometimes you can find the domain name you want from a list
of already expired domain names. (I did!)

Visit whois.net (or a similar site) to “Search through
deleted domains” by keyword.

This way you pay no commission (just the nominal domain
name registration fee) as you are simply registering a
“new” domain name.

3. Buy Domain Names on eBay

Another source of domain names is eBay. Look under both of
these categories:

Computers & Networking: Other Hardware & Services:
Domain Names; and

Business & Industrial: Websites & Businesses For Sale:
Internet Businesses, Websites.

4. Approach the Domain Name Registrant

Perhaps the name you want has already been registered by
someone else. Why not approach the domain name owner and
make an offer? The owner’s contact information may be
available on their website or from the domain name
registrar.

5. Search the Internet

Visit domain name brokers, for sale and classified sites,
forums, newsgroups, expiring domain names websites, search
engines, auction sites, and other websites to find your
domain name.

These, then, are just a few suggestions on where to buy
your domain names.
