A domain name generator enables you to come up with good domain names which you can use to create your site. There are many sites that provide for a domain name generator and you therefore should not have a problem getting one. One example of a site with a domain name generator is name boy. There are many factors to put in mind before you generate a name especially if you want a site that will enhance or start your business. The generator provides a step by step guide, to make sure that you come up with the name that will suit your business. It is always vital to have a catchy name which is short and concise. This means that you should not have a name that people will have to struggle before they remember.

Put in mind that people also tend to remember unusual names which evoke curiosity. You might be tempted to use your name when you are generating the domain name. This does not mean that it is wrong but, you need to weigh the kind of business you are in and ask yourself whether your name will do justice to the domain name. You might have a business that offer products like carpets, then you generate a name that does not even mention the business you are involved in. The domain name generator will guide you make your mind up and know how to add certain words so that you can come up with a masterpiece. Let the client or potential customer identify with the domain name.

The domain name generator will give you the various kinds of domain names so you can get to choose the ones most suitable for you. The generic word domain name is one example and it comes with several advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantage is that they are easy to remember and they are very catchy. Their big disadvantage is that they are all registered and it will be very hard to find an available generic domain. Other types of domain names are key phrase domains. They perform very well in search engines but, can be very hard to remember. The other kinds of domain names are brand created word domain names. They are very creative and come with great sounding names however, thinking of new words that are not registered can prove very challenging because many ideas have already been taken.

When you have come up with a good name, you need to have it registered and if it is very unique, you will find that it is very available. You need to register with a reputable domain name registrar. This needs to be a company which can offer a variety of good services. Firstly, they must be accredited by the internet governing body to offer the services. If you want a private domain registration, you need to find out whether the registrar you choose offers this service. When you get a private domain name registration, you will enjoy privacy and this means that your private details will not be viewed by the public.

Creating a website isn’t just a matter of picking a subject and getting it up and running, you often have to put a lot of consideration and research beforehand when choosing a domain name. There is a lot of controversy about domain names, people say that having the keywords in the domain name will give you a small advantage opposed to not having them in – don’t get me wrong, you can rank a domain name for anything you desire but if the little boost is there, why not go take advantage of it?

However one thing is for sure, having the domain name targeted to the sites niche will make it more user friendly. For example if you were to have a website on long term care insurance and your domain included that phrase, people would be able to identify the nature of the website before they have even looked at the site, this could reduce your bounce rate as you wouldn’t have people visiting unless they were genuinely interested. If you find out that the perfect domain name is taken, for example ‘longtermcareinsurance.com’ you could try different variations including hyphens (-). If you have your heart set on that domain you could contact the current owner and see if they would be willing to sell the domain name.

The next question is where do you actually buy a domain name from? There is no simple answer, there are hundreds of different places you can buy domain names from so you need to look around to ensure that you get the best deal. Asking friends and family is a good idea because you need the company to be reliable yet affordable. Don’t just assume that the cheapest place is the best as you will save the most money, you have to look into the support given if required and more importantly the charges when it comes to renewal or domain transfer. You would hate to find a good deal when buying a new domain name then one year later have to pay an extortionate renewal fee.

Once you have found a reputable company you should check if they accept any discount coupons, these can save you a great deal of money if you plan on buying a number of domains in the near future and trust me, it can be very addictive because if you find a domain that you believe you can develop – you have to buy it before it goes. The process of checking if the domain name is available is very simple, on the chosen website there is often a search facility where you can simply type in the domain name and within a few seconds it will come back whether it’s available or not. Be sure to double check the domain name is spelt correctly because if you rush through the application and then realise that you have misspelt the desired name, there is nothing you can do about it.

It’s that simple in today’s world that some companies actually allow you to buy a domain in just 3 clicks! Don’t be afraid to buy domains from different companies if they are holding various offers at the time of purchase, on the other hand you may want to keep everything in the same place so that managing and checking domains can be done with ease.

This article covers the key critical questions you should ask yourself to select a successful and profitable domain name for your home business. Is my domain name easy to remember?

So you want to be an Internet superstar, work from home and earn six figures cool we are working on doing just that. In previous articles we have discussed figuring out what you want to do for your home business another term for this is finding your niche.

We then discussed a few different programs available to help you if you are a Veteran, or Single mother. (There is a lot more of this to come)

We will now discuss step three in designing your income producing website.

Proper domain name selection.

When selecting a domain name there are a couple of key questions you should ask.

Is my domain name easy to remember?

When purchasing a domain you want to keep it as short as possible and avoid hyphens whenever possible. For example H-B-S.biz is much easier to remember then Home-Business-Success.biz. In this case we bought both names. We use the shorter domain to put on business cards, flyers, and brochures. When a person types in H-B-S.biz they are automatically forwarded to our long domain website. The long domain URL has two of our keywords in it, which should help with the search engines. The bottom line is the shorter and more memorable the domain the better. It is suggested to put keywords into your domain name wherever logically possible. Try to keep the domain short and use a maximum of three words. If you want to brand your company you can insert your company name in the domain. Be as specific as possible, for example if my company was called: XYZ marketing and one of my websites was about Home business I could purchase the domain XYZHomebusiness.com.

In, this example we have both our company name and keywords, so this would be a good domain name to choose. With some niches such as Home business the competition is tough so as in our case you might have to settle for a domain name with hyphens in it. Try to avoid it but it is not the end of the world.

Has anyone owned the domain prior to me?

When I was first looking for a domain name for H-B-S, I was happy to discover that Home-business-xxxxx.com was available so I bought it. Big mistake. We proceeded to build the page and gather incoming links as well as doing some manual submissions to directories. After a few weeks we noticed that our site was not getting crawled by the search engines. We also noticed that any emails I sent to Jeff using the new domain got blocked by his email spam program “Spam Cop”. We both wondered what the heck was going on. It was then I started to do some investigation to find out if someone else had owned the domain name prior. There are a number of ways you can check this. The first way is to go to Alexa.com and use the Wayback machine. Check to see if the site has ever been published on the net before. If the site is about Gambling, or a Pill store I suggest you look for another name.

Should I only buy a .com URL? Two years ago I would have said yes, however, today a .biz URL is fine. A majority of people who surf the net are aware of the .biz extension and your customers should also be able to remember it easily. As with the hyphen example above if you can get the .com and a spammer has not used it in the past go ahead and get both the .biz and .com versions.

Should I buy all the extensions available? In a nut shell yes! With the cost of a domain name starting at around $7.00 each I suggest for peace of mind and future growth you buy the .com, .biz and .org variations of your domain name. I know of a case where a person put up their site and built it for six months very successfully. Well about three months later the person discovered someone had bought the .biz version of their URL and was trying to steal traffic. Listen you are investing in your future success, spend a few extra dollars now to avoid a potentially major headache in the future.

Should I buy a domain name from a Domain auction? You should save your money. There are thousands of combinations of domain names that will fit your business. Take that money and invest it into your website promotion perhaps through Pay per click or pay for submission to a few of the upper level directories.

I hope this article has helped you and will make your domain name selection easier and more profitable.

Frustrated Domain Searchers

If you have tried to register a domain name lately, you’ve probably been quite frustrated with the whole process. The reasons are simple – good domain names are scarce and the popular ones have long been claimed.

Traditionally, when you needed to register a domain name, you went to a credited domain name registrar’s website, such as GoDaddy. Say you want to register the name, “filmratings.com.” You would type “filmratings.com” in GoDaddy’s search box and click the search button. Whoops, it’s already taken! Then you think, what about movieratings.com? Nope. Let me try movierankings.com. Nope. How about movierating.com, filmrating.com, onlinefilmratings.com? All taken. You end up sitting hours in front of you computer before finding a domain name you really like – if you’re lucky.

Domain Suggestion not Easy for Computers

So you wonder, wouldn’t it be nice if there were a tool that can automate the process and make this whole ordeal less painful? If this strikes a chord, you are not alone. Every month, 35,000 searches are made in Google for “domain suggestions” and “domain name suggestions.” This is a lot of frustrating searches.

Computers can help in the process of finding a domain name, but it is not always easy. Humans have the ability to reason and manipulate language. While searching for an alternative to “filmratings.com,” for example, a person can substitute each word with their synonyms, “movie” for “film,” or “ratings” for “rankings.” Not an easy thing for computers.

Humans are also able to grasp a word’s different shades of meaning. For example, “film” can mean a movie (as in a film festival) or the medium photographers use to shoot photos (as in camera films). The meaning changes with context, but a computer is not able to understand context; thus, they ignore the slight variations in subtext.

Finally, humans are able to make word associations that computers cannot. For example, “credit card debt,” “low rate credit card,” “get a credit card” are good expansions of “credit card,” while “sexy credit card,” “strong credit card” are not. Computers cannot replace a person’s linguistic and world knowledge-but it doesn’t stop the geeks from trying.

A Brief History of Domain Search Tools

In the beginning, there were web tools – usually called name generators or name spinners – that could use language rules or word combining techniques to generate a list of names. These rules, for example, changing singular nouns to plural ones or adding common prefixes or suffixes such as “my,” “online,” or “best,” are usually very simple and easy to craft. The disadvantage of using these rules, however, is that the number of suggestions offered by the computer is very limited. This approach, although naive, has been adopted by most domain name registrars because of its simplicity.

Then, in a means of improving the methodology, more sophisticated language technologies were adopted. By using technologies such as synonym substitution and statistical word collocations, these systems, best represented by DomainsBot, can generate hundreds of suggestions for any given keyword, greatly expanding the scope of the technology. The problem to this approach, however, is that many suggestions don’t make much sense and thus have little value. For example, the top five suggestions for the keywords “domain suggestions” from DomainsBot are:

Integral Domain Suggestions

Frequency Domain Suggestions

Domain Suggestions Objections

Binding Domain Suggestions

Exclusive Domain Suggestions

Clearly, this is far from perfect.

Enter Natural Language Processing (NLP). This technology has become the core technology and building block for many Internet companies, such as Google and Amazon. Sophisticated NLP technology has pushed the domain name search to a new high-at least, to a usable level. Within the last couple of years, two companies have used this system and made it work: DomainWhiz.net and DomainTools.

Here are the top five suggestions for the keywords “domain suggestions” from DomainWhiz:

DomainNamesSuggestions

SuggestDomainNames

DomainNamesSuggestion

DomainSearchSuggestions

DomainSuggestionsTool

…and from DomainTools:

URLSuggestions

WebDomainIdeas

DomainSparks

SuperSiteIdeas

DomainAlternativess

These suggestions (still available today, by the way) all make sense.

The two companies each have their weaknesses and strengths. In general, DomainTools’ suggestions are shorter, a plus. On the other hand, DomainWhiz’s suggestions tend to use keywords that would come naturally to a user. These keywords, with high SEO values, boost a website’s ranking in search engines’ returns, which leads to more visitors and more web traffic to the site.

How do the domain suggestion websites make money? DomainWhiz earns a commission by directing their users to GoDaddy to finalize the purchase. DomainTools’ revenue is obtained from user memberships. DomainTools shows the top 20 suggestions to the end user. If the user wants to see more suggestions than this, he is required to pay a $15 monthly membership fee. Although unconfirmed, DomainTools also appears to be a GoDaddy reseller.

Ok a new way to buy real estate has emerged and it’s called domaining, yes domaining. The address of a website is called a domain name and you can not have a website unless you have a domain name. Imagine a vacant block of land that still has an address. An example is ‘number one smith street’ and although there is no house on it this block of land still has an address ‘number one smith street.’ So when people decide to start a website, they will need to register a domain name. Quite often the name they desire is already registered by some one else and more often than not it is by a domainer!

Which is ok because it is legal to register a domain name to be sold at a later date. Some people register domain names as their investment portfolio instead of other types of investments such as the stock market or land. It is believed by domainers that the information highway is the most important resource of available information and entertainment that can be used by people, so a good website address is considered an asset and worth money. There are even websites dedicated to the buying selling and auctioning of domain names such as sedo.com and afternic.com and there are many forums that discuss the value of a domain name and the future of the internet, a few that come to mind are namepros.com and dnf.com, although some are specific to a certain country and the countries website extension, one example is in Australia they use the extension of .com.au and there is a domain forum called dntrade.com.au (dn is short for domain name)

The recent sale of toys.com made headlines recently because it sold for over $5 million us dollars to Toys R Us and guess what? It only cost $10. a year to register!! yes you do not own a domain name so to speak, but rather register it each year as required. A generic term such as dogs or perhaps pets is considered a great name because of the direct navigation they get, (direct navigation is when someone types in that exact website address instead of a google search) so a domain name that has a generic term is considered gold because of the natural traffic it will get. The most common extension is .com because it was the one first used when the internet started and is used world wide along side cctlds. What is a cctld? that is called the country code top level domain name, example is in England they use .co.uk and in China they use .cn So a country code is also an asset because it lets you know that the site you are looking at is local and within easy reach if you need to contact them. There is a website called dnjournal.com that reports on this industry each week and lists the sales of domain names each week. If you go to dnjournal.com at the top left hand side of the front page you will see just under where it says home (in yellow) domain sales is just underneath it, click on it and you will see the weekly sales chart …… it’s amazing and a true eye opener.

Although you would be better off joining a forum and learning the tricks of the trade before you go and spend all your hard earned cash on a domain name that is no good? Namepros.com has a section called market place and its where you can buy sell and auction names, they also have a section for newbies (new domainers) its a great place to ask questions and learn about domain names! and the domain name industry, this also has information and links to the world of domaining, check it out! you will learn alot quickly, also where you register a name is called a domain name registrar godaddy.com is the most popular, but there is many such as dynadot.com and moniker.com. Most are reasonalbe in their pricing, there is also enom.tv who offer many different extensions. So do check them out and join one if you are interested in becoming a domainer. Why am I telling you this??? Well the world is changing and one day you might need your own domain name to start a website for yourself or your business.

Determining your domain name is a very important step in developing your online presence. The domain name you select will brand your website as well as your business so take your time and choose carefully.

What Characters Are Allowed in a Domain Name

The quick and easy answer to what characters are allowed when determining your domain name is that letters, numbers and hyphens (“-”) are allowed. All other characters are not.

Domain names are not case sensitive, all letters used in domain names are in lower case. Therefore when creating your domain name you cannot use capital letters to differentiate your domain name from another with the same characters. For example if ‘atnetters.com’ is already taken you will not be able to simply change a couple of letters to upper case, ie. ‘AtNetters.com’, to get the name you want.

About hyphens…a domain name cannot begin or end with a hyphen. Sometimes when a desired domain name is already taken hyphens are used between the words to achieve the same effect (ie. i-like-this-name). Caution should be used if you decide to use hyphens when creating a domain name as viewers may later remember the words in the domain name but forget the hyphens and end up at a competitor’s website.

Lastly the maximum number of characters you can use when you determine a domain name is 63 not counting the dot and extension (ie “.com”). It is recommended that you keep your domain names to less than 23 characters as some applications do not support domains longer than 22 characters (excluding the dot and extension).

Which Extension Should You Select?

There is a host of extensions to choose from when determining a domain name. To effectively select an extension you should consider what type of audience you are trying to reach and what the nature of your business is.

The three most recognized domain name extensions are .com, .net and .org. Websites that use the .com extension are businesses targeting international traffic. Network providers usually use the .net extension. Non-profit organizations are users of the .org extensions.

If you are targeting an audience specific to your country you can select a country specific extension, for example if you want to reach a Canadian market you could select .ca. Sometimes there are criteria you must meet when choosing a country specific domain name extension, such as being a resident or having an affiliation.

General Guidelines

Some tips to follow when determining a domain name…

Relative – one of the most important things to remember is that your domain name should be relevant to the content of your website.

Keep it short – the shorter it is the easier it is to remember and type, if you can create a domain name that is one or two words it will be easier for people to remember

Make it catchy and easy to say – people will tend to remember your website if the domain name is catchy and rolls off the tongue easily.

Avoid intentional misspellings – replacing a word with a number (ie. ’2′ instead of ‘to’) can lead to users typing the domain name incorrectly and end up driving your traffic to a competitor. It is also wise to avoid using words that are spelled differently in other countries, like the word colour (color) or the word value (valu).

Easy to read – certain letters when placed beside each other can be difficult to read in the address area of the toolbar, this is affected by the font settings in an individual’s browser. Examples of this would be i/l or the number/letter combination 1/l, or the letters r, m and n. So it might be a good idea to type your intended domain name in your browser bar to see how it looks before you make your final decision.

Add a word – if the domain name you want is unavailable you could add a word to the beginning or end of it. For example if you want ‘gooddog.com’ you could add ‘the’ or ‘my’ in front so your domain name could be ‘mygooddog.com’ or ‘thegooddog.com’

If you are having difficulty determining a domain name often domain name registration service providers have a suggestion tool if the name you want is not available.

To create a good domain name many factors are put into consideration. First of all you must have a reason for setting up a domain. And this reason could fall into any of this two broad categories;

1.)	For business reasons

2.)	For personal uses

BUSINESS DOMAINS

To pick a domain name for a business purpose/reason, there are certain factors that will help you pick a good domain name, these includes;

a.)	What type of online business do you intend running with your domain- the type of business you wish to do online will definitely affect what you pick as your domain name, this is because your domain name has to be related to what ever business you do. For example you don’t expect people who are looking for health related issues to visit a domain that bears a name on real estates.

b.)	Use .com domain tags for domain business- this is because domains using the .com tags have universal acceptance compare to others like .org, .net, .ng, e.t.c. Must people who come online are familiar with .com tags after every domain/website name and it is by far the most marketable. Therefore there is the tendency that someone who wants to remember your domain name may mistake it to end with a .com tags when your domain ends with a .net, or .org.

c.)	Avoid similar or familiar domain names- why you should avoid similar domain names is that a company may also be using that name and they may press against you to relinquish your domain especially when they have all it takes to do so. So to avoid you having a bad turn around in your business online after a little success avoid the similar domain names.

d.)	Catchy domain name- to attract people to your domain it must be catchy in the sense that it is easy to read, understand, interpret and remember. You domain should be once that makes people curious to know what it’s all about. Make it short.

e.)	You domain name should suggest what it is all about- if your domain is on political issues it should have a name that will suggest it is politically inclined

f.)	Be specific about your domain name- to increase value to your domain and there by draw goo traffic to it, it should be a domain that tell what area it is focused on e.g. if you deal on Nissan motors instead of making your domain for example autodealers.com you should make it more specific like nissanautodealers.com.

g.)	Use common names- use common words that are familiar to people so as to help increase traffic to your site

Highly desirable domains names are becoming more and more difficult to acquire, especially with favored extensions like .com and .net. With major industries like domain trading, traders are rapidly devouring desirable domain names.

Most websites are associated with a domain name. The concept is simple, it is much easier to remember a name like google.com rather than a numerical address like 216.239.51.99. Highly desirable domains names are becoming more and more difficult to acquire, especially with favored extensions like .com and .net. With major industries like domain trading, traders are rapidly devouring desirable domain names.

Domain Extensions

Currently certain extensions are more desirable than others and some extensions are intended to categorize. For example, the .org extension is traditionally used to categorize non-profit organizations. Likewise a .gov extension is intended to categorize government websites. There are country extensions as well such as .ca (Canada) or .jp (Japan) in an attempt to organize registrations by nation.

Ideally a domain name should be short and not easily misspelled. Preferably, target top level domain (TLD) extensions from the original Internet specification such as .com, .net, .edu, or .org. Be sure the extension is appropriate to what the website is about. A .org extension may be appropriate for a church but not for a florist. For highly desirable domain names a .biz or other less popular extension may be a reasonable trade off. For example, google.biz would be much better than googlebestdarnsite.com.

For the general public .com is still the favored and most sought out extension. Being one of the original Internet specifications, this may still lead users to assume a .com extension. This may be true today but this may change in the future. As .biz and other extensions become more popular, users may become more apt to note extensions. The most important thing goes back to the basic principal of domain names, make it easy to remember.

Domain Naming

A domain name that specifically names a business may be ideal. However, specifics are becoming much more difficult to acquire. You may be doing business as Toms Hardware, but may discover all desirable domain names and extensions are all ready taken. Another option may be to pair a key word with a random word or even pair two random words. For example, snapfish.com (no affiliation) is an online photo service. Short, two words not easily misspelled, and a .com extension. While snap may be associated with a photo service the word fish doesn’t exactly fit in, except in the world of domain naming. Random pairing of this sort is becoming more difficult as well but offers a better chance of scoring a valuable domain name. Target desirable words, short, appealing, and not easily misspelled. For example, anhinga could easily be misspelled and would not be an ideal domain name unless the site was specifically about anhingas.

Domain Trading

As mentioned earlier, domain trading is a major industry. There are many domain auction sites where you may be able to acquire your preferred domain name. Domain trading sites offer thousands of domains for sale to be purchased directly or through an auction. Domain names are often appraised, trading sites may have a huge listing for under $1,000. More desirable domain names in the multi thousand dollar range. In rare cases a domain may sell for tens of thousands in U.S. dollars, and in very rare cases more than one million U.S. dollars. With registration fees for a new domain often less than $10 the domain trading market is growing very rapidly. If you have a very specific domain you wish to acquire you may be able to look up the current registrant in a “whois” database and make an offer.

Domain Searching

Be patient, take some time to do a thorough domain name search. Consider all the possible variants that may be appropriate. The challenge of finding a great domain may take many hours but could be well worth the effort. Remember the principal of domain names in the first place, making it easy for your audience to remember how to get to your site.

When it comes to selecting the right sort of domain name for your business there are certain things which one needs to take into consideration first. If you are looking to be able to make money online with your domain name then you need something that will clearly distinguish you from your competitors. In this article we offer 10 domain name tips that can make you money online as you will have been able to select the one that is right for you.

Tip 1 – Along with choosing a keyword rich domain name it also has to be one that clearly reflects the service or product you are selling. For example if you are going to be offering detailed maps of Europe then a name such a euromaps.com should be used. Or if for example you are selling unusual cheeses then a name like weirdcheese.com is ideal.

Tip 2 – If you can by domain names that are either existing or which have expired. When it comes to getting ranked high in Google the older the domain the much higher they generally get ranked. When looking for a domain name select ones that are at least a year old. In order to check the domain including whether the page rank has been forged use something checkpageranking.com to do so.

Tip 3 – It is important that you choose a top level domain name (TLD). So ideally look for those that end in .com, .net, .info or .org. However, if you are trying to get domain names for a specific country say the UK then aim for those that end in .co.uk.

Tip 4 – Before you buy any TLD’s you need to ensure that they are currently available. There are plenty of online services that can assist you with this but they do charge a fee. However the fee is nominal and is worth paying if you don’t want to be faced with any problems concerning it in the future.

Tip 5 – When you do get round to purchasing your domain names go for a extended period of say around 10 years. Just as with the older domain names ones purchased for an extended period tend to rank higher in the pages of search engines like Google than those that have been brought for say a year.

Tip 6 – The domain names you select should be ones that are short and which visitors to your site will remember easily. These types of domain names will help to get visitors to your site returning time after time.

Tip 7 – It is far better to go for those domain names which have no hyphens within them. However, if you are having problems finding ones that are suitable then limit the number of hyphens in it. Preferably you should only have around 1 hyphen as any more than this and you may find your site being penalized because it looks spammy.

Tip 8 – It is best if you don’t go for domain names that relate to a certain brand or trademark as you will then have to compete with plenty of others to attract visitors to your site. So not only are you reducing the chances of getting the visitors you need to your but also reducing the chances of you making money from it.

Tip 9 – All domain names should have either numbers, letters or hyphens in them and never any spaces. As with too many hyphens spaces in domain names will cause the search engines like Google to penalize it.

Tip 10 – When purchasing and parking domain names make sure that you use the same registrar. Not only does it make it easier for you to update your contact details but also when it comes to renewing them. Once you have found a registrar you can trust ensure that you do keep all contact information updated especially your email address. Otherwise when it comes to being informed of the domains renewal you won’t be given the information.

Above we have shown you 10 domain name tips that can make you money online. The better your domain name the more visitors you will get visiting your site and so the chances of you actually making some sales from the are greatly increased. If you keep the above 10 domain name tips that can make you money online in mind you cannot go far wrong with selecting the ones that are right for you.
