Is your domain name secure? Learn how to protect your domain name from unauthorized use and transfer.

If you have a home phone, you’ve probably been warned about “slamming”, a process by which unscrupulous long distance carriers switch you to their service without your permission. What a lot of people don’t know is that this type of hijacking can happen with domain names.

Unfortunately, some site owners have experienced this. Common practices include:

A third party changing your domain’s name server information so that it points to a web host they control. Your domain name then loads the content of their choice.

Another domain registrar transferring your domain, and charging you their higher fees.

Unauthorized third parties creating subdomains on your domain, and using them to host their own content.

And just as the FCC has taken steps to prevent unauthorized long distance swaps, you can prevent unauthorized changes to your domain registration information by ensuring your domain registrar provides a domain lock service (not all do). Yahoo Small Business Domains is one popular domain provider who offers it at no charge.

You can modify settings for Yahoo domain names in the Yahoo Domain Control Panel, which allows you to enable Domain Locking. With this feature enabled, absolutely no changes (other than yearly renewal) can be made to the status or technical information of the domain without your explicit consent – not even by you (until you turn off Domain Locking).

Aside from registration your domain through a trusted registrar such as Yahoo Domain, you can also take help prevent domain hijacking by using private registration to hide your domain’s administrative contact information. If the administrative email address is publicly available, then a potential hijacker has two important pieces of information – the domain name, and the administrator’s email address. If they can then gain access to the administrative email address, they can modify domain settings.

When you have a cheap domain name, the next thing you think about is how to get a cheap domain name registration.

When you have a cheap domain name, the next thing you think about is how to get a cheap domain name registration. But, if you have trouble getting that cheap domain name, you need to make sure you get the right information that will guide you to landing on a very good and cheap domain name. Firstly, it is good to establish what exactly is a domain name and why exactly it is important. When you want to have a website, you must come up with an address or a name that you can use to refer to your site. The name is called a domain name. You can get the name from companies which are licensed to offer the service. What you get from these companies is the registration service and you get to invent your own name.

When you come up with a name and find that it is already taken, you can buy already existing domain names from domain name resellers. They are people or companies who own the names in bulk and are willing to offer them to the public at a price. Therefore, you can search your ideal domain name and get a good offer for it. This good offer is the cheap domain name. This market is a bit unregulated and demand for a particular domain name determines the price. But, before you even think of a cheap domain name registration, make sure that the name is appropriate or suitable for its function. There are several things that you need to consider while choosing a cheap domain name and they include the following.

Firstly, let the name be short and clear. Nothing beats simplicity and if possible, cut all the technical details and let people identify with a name they can pronounce and remember. Let your business aspect come out from the cheap domain name. There are names that you hear about and they totally have no connection with the kind of business they represent. It is not easy to choose a name that meets these qualifications in an almost perfect way but, the secret is real simple. It is taking time and not rushing the process of cheap domain name registration. Many people get some of the best ideas after taking time to think about it. Let your business and personality inspire you to choosing the right domain name.

Domain name registration is done by registrars who are authorized by the internet governing body. You should therefore make sure that the company meets this qualification. The process is simple and your domain name has to meet the right requirements like the non use of symbols. You will then decide on which company has the best offers in terms of price and service. The internet will enable you search and know all you stand to gain when you have a domain name registration with the particular company. You will be happy to make the right decision and there are no two ways about it, you have to have the right information about the process.

Why would you want to do a domain name lookup? What can you find out by doing one?

There are many reasons you might wish to do a domain name lookup. These may include the following -

1. To find out if a name is already taken, if you wish to buy it. You may have a great idea for a site, and need a particular name. (In this case, just type the domain name onto the address field of a browser. You will either get a message that the site can’t be found, which implies it is not registered yet; or you will be taken to a web site which uses the domain name already.)

2. To see which individual or company owns a specific domain.

3. To get the contact details for the owner of a domain, so that you could send an offer to buy it.

4. To use the lookup information to contact the domain owner or technical contact to complain about something offensive or inaccurate on the web site, or, for example, because the site has content or images which have been taken from a site you own yourself, breaking copyright. (In this case, the nameserver information may give a clue about the name of the hosting service used by the domain owner, whom you could also complain to.)

5. To contact the owners of a domain who have infringed on a trademark which you own or control.

So, how do you do a domain name lookup anyway? Simply go to whois.net and use their search boxes. This is free. (Apart from whois.net, there are many other domain name search tools too, of course.) Minimum registration data for existing domains which you will be able to see following a lookup includes the registrant’s name, who the domain is registered through, and the nameservers. Depending on the registrar’s policies and setup, you may also be able to get a contact email address, a physical address and a phone number for the registrant and for the technical contact.

In addition, you may be able to see the date when the registration of the domain expires. This does not mean, of course, that the domain would be available to buy after that. Most domain registration services now have automatic domain renewals when the expiry date arrives, to protect their customers.

In some cases, the owner of a domain will have made a private registration, so that no personal details are available through who is lookups: the registrar’s contact details will be available instead.

In addition, most of the good domain registration services will allow you to do a domain name lookup, then buy any available domain there and then.

If you wish to lookup and buy a domain now, see my domain name registration page for tips on exactly how to do it.

There are secrets to making money from domain names that the Pro's would rather keep to themselves. Learn 'insider' plus 'under the radar' techniques and start to build your domain name empire.

Ever considered speculating on Domain Names? Or maybe failed to turn a profit from a Name you had high hopes for? Well don’t beat yourself up, just stay with me because I’d like to share a few thoughts that I know will interest you.

You’re already aware that obscene amounts of money are made from Domain Names. You know that every month names once purchased for as little as $12, are changing hands for amounts ranging from $25 (100% Profit!) up to 5 figures sums, and frequently six or even seven figure fortunes. And I’m not referring to sales of websites, just Domain Names on their own. (Not only dot com’s, but also .net’s, .org’s, .info’s, even .biz names, plus many national extensions like .us, .de etc.)

Now, lets digress, does the following sound like anyone you Know?

He dedicates an hour to thinking up a domain name that’s bound to appeal. Armed with credit card, he then eagerly searches the web for a Domain Registration Service.

Discovering the domain name is already registered, he quickly comes up with several less appealing variations, at last finding one that’s available to register. Cost $15. Job done, he sits back to contemplate a massive profit, expected imminently!.

Days drift by, then weeks, then months. No one materialises with an offer. Not to be deterred, he gets pro-active and offers the domain on eBay for $999.95 (Worried that his asking price maybe too low). One week – plus one $6 bid – later, scratches head, rubs chin and wonder’s, what next?

Staying positive, he reads a few domain articles, but is now developing a sneaky suspicion that either this Domain Name business aint all it’s cracked up to be, or some vital knowledge is missing. Decides to put Domain Speculation on hold, and turns his attention to other matters.

OK. Maybe our apprentice speculator was a little more scientific about things, but you get the message.

I’ve owned close to 1000 Domain Names and, to be frank, I got it badly wrong. No – lets be honest – horribly wrong! In fact, it’s cost me an horrendous amount of cash. Only recently have I begun to see where I went wrong.

I now realize that the whole process is one demanding a professional strategy, e.g:

Decide whether to acquire for income, short term re-sale, or income plus capital appreciation.

Buy Domain Names with just a few, carefully selected, niche’s in mind.

Use key-word searches to generate Name ideas that truly reflect what those in your chosen niche/s are seeking.

Choose whether to search for unregistered names (hugely time consuming when it comes to finding quality names, most of which have been registered) or look to buy in the secondary marketplace, where you’ll pay more, but maybe stand a better chance of acquiring a valuable asset.

Locate the right Registration Service. (Low Registration Fees, plus availability of additional services you may want to utilise)

Know what you’ll do with your Domain Name once you’ve acquired it, e.g:

# Hold on to it

~ Park it.

# Lease it (A much overlooked option).

~ Create a website to promote it, and simultaneously generate some revenue.

# Offer it immediately to prospective buyer’s active in the niche you’ve chosen.

~ Offer it on a Secondary Market Site (like Sedo)

# ‘Talk up’ the name on Domain Forums to try and generate interest.

~ Offer it to a Domain Name Portfolio Owner. (i.e. a corporate entity that control thousands of Names).

# Offer it on a specialist or general Auction Site.

And that’s just the beginning. You could seek out and buy recently expired domains, to exploit the traffic they still get. Or how about using services that specialise in catching ‘dropping names’, i.e. where owners no longer want to renew registration (or have forgotten their domains are due to expire).

There are some great publications, ebooks etc., that tell you exactly what to do to accomplish the above. There’s excellent, inexpensive and easy to use software and web services to make the whole process of locating names faster, slicker and – potentially – more profitable.

(TIP: Even if you think you don’t need these publications, tools or resources, at least check out the ‘sales spiel’ used by the Merchants who promote them. This ‘spiel’ will often let slip some ‘top tactics’ used by the Pro’s, or reveal cunning strategies and little known facts you can then use to your advantage.)

The good news is that, when it comes to domain names, there are many avenues to explore and exploit.

Don’t give up on making money from domain names, just start thinking smarter, and get the results you deserve!

Once you find out a good expired domain name after searching through a big catalogue of expired domains, the next obvious step is to register the domain as per the existing rules and regulations stipulated by registering authorities. Following are few steps that registrars suggest that you follow to register them:

People who wish to register expired domain should know all the legal and regulatory clauses and laws. When you know the nitty-gritty of working with such domain, you will be on a safer side, with a clean expired domain name in your hand. Several laws and legislations govern all aspects of such registration; most of these legal strictures are very rigid and one needs to follow them letter by letter.

To register :

a) Firstly, you will need to develop a list of potential expired domain names by surfing through the catalogue of names offered by the sellers.

b) Once you search through the list, you will need to segregate the available names based on their extension. There are a number of domains to choose from, ranging from dotcom, dotbiz to dotorg and dotinfo.

c) By chance, when you find an immediately available domain name, you may need to rush and register immediately. If you have enough funds, you can even buy and register the closest possible substitutes. If you find a name that is similar to yours or if there is a hyphened version, then you may consider register them as well, just to protect your rights and virtual presence.

d) If there is a domain name owned by a previous owner, you may wish to know the history and track record of it. If the site is surrounded with a considerable amount of inbound traffic, there will be a huge rush for the domain due to its commercial importance. Such domains will have some tell-tale symbols prominently displayed on the home page of the site. A good domain will be listed on top of the list and it may carry a steep price tag.

Once you feel that you have a good domain name in your kitty, you can start initiating the process of registering the expired domain in question. Register it as early as possible to prevent someone registering for it; right now, there is a fierce competition for available names and a good name may fetch considerable fortune.

Register expired domain to create an invaluable asset and a future goldmine. Registration of an expired domain will have to carry out in a stipulated period mentioned by the registrar. Once you become successful in registering with the registrar who sold it to you, the next important thing is to protect all trademarks and logos associated with the domain. People register expire domain for a period of two years or more and keep it for their own use. On the other hand, others may register for a period of just one year and sell it off for a big profit within one year.

John Khu is an author and also a seasoned professional with vast experience in expired domain name business. He is the owner of the path breaking web site called http://www.expireddomainsecret.com which provides complete and up-to-date information on expired domains and their eternal secrets.

There are cheap domain names out there but beware of the hidden charges and the cons.

Cheap domain names

A lot of places advertise the prices of domain name registration very cheaply, however once you go through the process of registration and onto checkout you may well find that the initial price has increased slightly, this is not uncommon and many of the big domain name registrars are known for this. In the majority of cases there are some legitimate reasons for this such as tax being added or V.A.T if you purchase your domain name registration in the UK. In other cases you may acquire the domain name for a very low price only to find other hidden costs after registration, these often include administration fees for changing the DNS records (Domain Name System).

The DNS is a record, at the registry that converts IP addresses from numbers into names, i.e. 123.456.789.0 to http://www.yourdomain.com). This is needed when you come to host your site, the server that your site is hosted on will have a unique IP address, this address needs to be associated with your domain name in the nameservers section of the DNS setting. The most common hidden charges you will likely come across are the transfer out fees, this becomes relevant when you want to move your domain name to another company for whatever reason, this can be very excessive and I have seen cases where this fee is as high as $100.

What to look for when registering a domain name?

Not all companies have such hidden charges, there are some registrars that adhere to the price you see on the registration page, and there are many companies that will register domain names quite cheaply in the hope that you will take up some of their other services such as hosting or other additional services, this is fair practice, What you need to look out for when buying a cheap domain name registration is that you have complete control over it, a lot of companies will register your domain name and that is it the end of it, however there are companies that will give you a control panel where you have complete control over your domain name once registered, this is a vital feature as a domain name control panel will make it very easy for you to change the DNS settings, your registration and contact details, privacy options and a whole list of other services quite easy.

Finally you need to make sure that the domain name company is trustworthy, many of the top domain name companies will charge your credit card on a recurring basis, this is to be avoided, you really should have a registrar that reminds you of your domain name renewal and gives you the option on whether to renew the domain name or to leave it lapse. The resource box below will recommend a domain name registration company that ticks all the right boxes.

For the cheapest domain names that tick all the right boxes go to BusinessHostingPlus.com or for cheap UK domain names Brython.com

Applicants for domain names have developed their own myths. Some have been repeated so often, they sound true. Those untold information is what this paper is going to tell you.

Lawyers eat nails for breakfast. Rap is Etch-a-Sketch set to music. The Law of Unintended Consequences governs the nation. These beliefs are part of a canon of urban folklore that we spread as truth among our friends. Applicants for domain names have developed their own myths. Some have been repeated so often, they sound true. Those untold information is what this paper is going to tell you.

Myth One: Always Pick .Com Domain Name

It is always asked a person to go for .com domain name. The domain ending with .com is easy to remember, as they are the most common name but not necessary the best. For one thing, there are many domain names ending in .com so it’s really hard to find a domain name ending with one. Picking a .com is good depending on how you are gaining traffic. If you are targeting people that are looking in search engines it can be pointless to just pick a .com domain. Though if you are advertising in Television, Newspapers or the Radio it might help somewhat.

Myth Two: Avoid Using Dashes Or Never Go For That

Once again, this all depends on what you are doing. Remember, search engines translate dashes as spaces, so if you are targeting a popular keyword and use dashes as spaces, than your page will be easier to get onto the top ten search results of that keyword. Some search engines put more emphasis on this than others. So avoiding dashes or not applying anywhere in the domain name can be a fruitful option for you.

Myth Three: Selecting A Domain Name

Choosing a domain name may be a pain, many may prefer domain names that are short but they are not necessarily better. Its true you don’t want a domain name that is extremely long but you don’t want it to be so short that nobody can remember it (unless you own a url forwarding service). There are many combinations of words you can use. It is highly suggested checking a domain name generator. They can be very useful, you enter a keyword and it displays possible combinations with other words and tells you if they’re available.

Myth Four: Domain Used Forever.

While it’s possible that you’ll keep your registered domain name forever, it is not guaranteed. Several things can happen that would cause you to lose your domain name. First, you have to register your domain name each year (or register it for multiple years up front) in order to keep your access to it. If you forget to renew your registration, you could lose your domain name, or someone else can register it and charge you a huge fee to have it transferred back to your name. Second, you could lose your domain name in a trademark dispute.

Myth Five: Domain Registration Through Company Name

You cannot use your company name for the domain registration; in fact, you don’t have the right to register any domain name, even if you have a trademark on the corresponding company name. The reason for this is that a trademark on a business name doesn’t give you exclusive access to use that name. It only gives you exclusive access to use that name for the particular products and / or services that you offer.

Some things you should consider if it’s your first time to put up your own website. You should know that you need to register for a domain name. To get a domain name easily, a domain registration search will get you your own unique domain name.

Thousands of domain names that are used in the market and other thousands of people are registering everyday so it may be hard to come up with a unique domain name. You can try out different matches of domain names which have not been used by all the other websites with the domain registration search.

Coming up with a domain name with a single phrase in the English Language and all other major languages is very difficult. Here are some tips on how to start your domain registration search.

First tip is to make sure that you avoid messing up with the domains that are new in the web sites. Mostly already registered and are owned by someone domains are good domains. Don’t settle on the number-ridden and those which have a hyphenated domain name.

The search will give you a lot of choices that you can use. You might not have any choice but to use those names with hyphen or numbers when all else fails. This will make people not remember the domain name for good and is a major disadvantage.

You can make use of a domain name that is already registered you find in your search in a few days or months after its registration expires. Search engines sometimes ban some sites because of duplicates or did not get through the spam filters. You may use the domain name of these sites. Just try and go on with your search and see if the domain name is made available. If not, you may resolve to other domain name alternatives. There is just one domain name waiting for your approval which will bring luck to your site and be known to the world…CONTINUE [http://domainnameregistrationguide.useful-tips.com/how-to-make-use-of-domain-registration-search.html]

The Registration of domain names is a thriving business on the Internet today – this is evident by the high bids that companies are willing to pay in Per-Per-Click (PPC) engines to attract potential customers for domain name registration.

The business of domain name registration is sometimes referred to as “Internet Real Estate”. Just like we can occupy high traffic areas in the central business districts of major cities in the real world, we can register domains for commonly used words or sought after keywords to generate traffic more easily to our websites. While most common words and abbreviations have already been taken for the most widely used top level domain names, with a little bit of creativity we can still register an endless number of promising domain names.

While there is no clear indication to what extent .com, .net as well as country top level domain names such as .co.uk, .de, .fr and so forth influence search engine rankings of websites, the word is that .org domains are still favored by Google as part of the non-commercial tradition.

However, this article is not looking at how the domain extension influences the ranking of a website as this is thought to be insignificant for search engine rankings. A stronger influence on search engine rankings have indeed the length of registration, frequency of DNS changes as well as the reputation of the registrar.

Even though sometimes overrated in its importance – especially in relationship to its effect on search engine rankings, domain names do remain an important asset for the online corporate identity of your business.

The main consideration concerning your domain name will be to choose between a creative name (such as “yahoo”, “alibaba”, “kazaa”) or a keyword name (such as “study-tourism”, “retail-gifts” or “hawaii-mortgage-company”. In fact using main keywords in your domain name does have a positive effect on your search engine rankings, especially to get your rankings off the ground after launching a new website. Down the road the effect however becomes almost negligible.

While many people tend to register numerous domain names to accommodate most important key words within them, they overlook that Google and other major search engines will pay almost the same attention to sub-domains. So instead of registering “hawaii-real-estate”, “florida-real-estate” and so forth, we might as well just register “real-estate” and have sub domains such as “hawaii.real-estate”, “florida.real-estate” and so forth.

What people further underestimate is that search engines in general look for keywords in the URL (unique resource locator) which comprises of the top level domain, any potential sub-domains and of course the file name. So, if you happen to be using a creative domain name that does not contain any important key words, you can of course include your main keywords in the file name of the webpage itself, i.e. florida-real-estate.html.

Hence, in a nutshell, while domain names are a major asset for your corporate identity, their significance for search engine rankings is overrated, as there are various ways to accommodate significant keywords in the URL and eventually other onsite factors (coding techniques, content) of a website will have a greater impact for search engine rankings.
