A Winning Domain Name

June 11th, 2010 No comments

A winning domain name can put you miles ahead of your competition. After all, that’s the purpose of your website, right? Unfortunately most business owners and webmasters don’t realize choosing the right domain name can be crucial to the websites success.

Good domain names have several things in common. They are descriptive of the websites content; they are easy to remember and easy to spell. Being descriptive of the websites content is the most important because this is how you will attract existing traffic to your website. If your website or business is in the shoe business, shoe better be in your domain name if you want to succeed.

Your domain name is your location on the internet. It’s your piece of virtual real estate that you can develop however you see fit. Your domain name separates you from the 120 million or so websites on the internet today. Choosing a winning domain name is the equivalent to choosing a good location for an offline business.

In order to be competitive an offline business must have a location that has existing traffic counts that will support their venture. The same is true for your website. Good domain names have the potential to capture existing traffic on the internet. That’s right “existing traffic” people already seeking the product or services you provide!

Traffic is the most sought after commodity on the internet. You can develop the website of all websites but without traffic who cares, no one will ever see it. Every website on the internet must have traffic to succeed and better yet, targeted traffic.

A winning domain name can deliver existing targeted traffic to your website from day one! When it comes to choosing the right domain name the vast majority of people, even professional webmasters, do not understand this concept. Good domain names have the potential to deliver targeted traffic to your website.

Existing traffic will come from two major sources, direct navigation or “type in traffic”, and the major search engines. Approximately 10 to 15% of all internet searches are done via direct navigation. Direct navigation is when a person types a domain name directly into the address bar bypassing the traditional search engines. If you are looking for shoes you would type in shoes.com and be taken to that website.

The major benefit of a winning domain name is having the potential to take the existing direct navigation traffic, and leverage it into mass amounts of targeted traffic, using proper search engine and website optimization practices. This in turn increases your search engine ranking.

The search engines consider many factors when ranking a page; the domain name is one of those factors. A good domain name is the foundation of a good website. Once you have the solid foundation, you develop a highly optimized website that enables you to leverage the traffic into profits.

For those that continue to think choosing the right domain name has no importance, why is the domain name industry booming? Major news stories on the domain name industry have recently been published in the New York Times, CNN Money, Fox Business and the Christian Science Monitor. Major sales over $4 million have already taken place in 2008. Major corporations are purchasing domain names. Don’t discount the importance of choosing a good domain name when developing your website, your competition may understand the value!

Real Estate Website Hosting – Own Your Own Domain!

June 11th, 2010 No comments

So where do you start in the quest to establish your own independent real-estate website? The First Step – Register Your Unique Real estate Domain Name.

A domain name is your own unique address on the world wide web – just like your telephone number or email address. Domain names ends with .com or .net etc. Its always preferable to have a domain name with a .com extension, because that is the most widely recognized for businesses, and there are other advantages too which we will get into later.

Lets explore the things you need. The very first step is to find a list of good seed names for your real estate business. Now maybe you are already incorporated or more likely you work under your broker using your own name. So your own name or your own business name is probably the easiest seed name to start with. Now, the next step might sound easy, but it is a bit harder than you think. Ideally the domain name should be easy to read and spell, not very long and preferably limited to 25 characters or less. Using variations of your name eg. John- Doe- Realtor might be easier to get than John Doe. And last but not least, it should be easy to roll off the tongue ! – you should be able to speak your domain name over the phone and the person on the other side should understand it without having to repeat over and over again ! I am reminded of that famous politician who was trying to pronounce his website name on TV during his ten minutes of fame. It was filled with dashes. Say John-dash-Doe-dash-Realtor-of-dash-Mytown. over the phone to someone, and you will get my point. Once you have thought about a few choices for your favorite domain name, its time to go to the next step.

Is that domain name already taken ? I can almost guarantee you that if you thought about the perfect domain name for your business, it is very likely that it has already been taken by someone else. If you had started this process in the early days of the web, you would have found your ideal real estate domain without any competition! These days competition for domain names is fierce. But do not despair!, being late only means that you’ve been busy doing other exciting things – right?

So how do you find if your perfect real estate domain name is already taken by your most hated competitor ? This is the next step. will then need to search if the domain is already taken by someone else. The easiest way to start your search is to go with an ICANN domain registrar like GoDaddy or Dotster.

Actually you can make this an interactive process – that is search for the domain name and see if it has already been taken in one step. For instance on the GoDaddy site you can type in your domain name of choice, and if the domain name is already taken, you will be given choices for alternate names that sound similar, or variations of the name you typed in – its called Smart Search.

Thousands of articles have been written on picking a great domain name and the importance of the domain name in getting positioned in search engines like google or yahoo. But here is a secret – Its been debated among experts – but it is very possible that the age of your domain name matters in search positioning. The older your domain name, the better chances it has of coming up higher in the search engines. So even if you do not plan on developing your website immediately, atleast do yourself a favor and reserve that favorite domain name NOW!

You might be able to register the domain name for FREE! – because most webhosts lets you register your domain name without cost if you purchase a basic Webhosting package from them. See the next article in this series on How to Finding An Ideal WebHost for your Real estate website.

Domain Names For Higher Search Engine Rankings

June 11th, 2010 No comments

1. Does having more than one domain name help my search rankings? No. There’s no need to register a zillion names for your website as it will not help your search rankings one iota.

2. I have a URL I’ve had for years, should I ditch it for a domain name filled with keywords? No. The older websites get higher rankings on Google. Having keywords in your URL is helpful for SEO, but the SEO benefits are higher for older sites.

3. I want to optimize for several different keyword phrases, should I buy one domain name for each of my keywords? No. Getting several URLs, even those with keywords will not help your case. In fact, this practice can trigger Google’s spam filters and cause your site to be penalized.

4. Should I hyphenate my new website since I’m using keywords? It used to be good SEO to hyphenate your site so the search engines could read the words separately, such as: real-estate-usa.com, however, this practice is no longer necessary. If you do choose to hyphenate your site’s URL, do not use more than three words or it may trigger Google’s spam filters and cause penalties and/or delayed rankings.

5. How long should I register my domain? Register it for as long as you can afford. Google actually gives “points” to those sites that have long-term registrations because it signals that you are here-to-stay and not a fly-by-night spammer.

6. What if I want to use a different domain name in my public advertising than the one where my website resides now? If you do not like your website name and decide to use a different one for your business cards and brochure then you can simply have the preferred domain forwarded to your existing website moniker.

7. I am getting a website URL, will I be in a sandbox? Yes. Newer sites and brand new domain names usually have to suffer through a “hold-back” period by Google. This is the time that Google uses to keep those who aren’t serious out of the mix of top rankings. The sandbox is worse in highly competitive areas and easier for less-competitive keyword phrases.

8. I have a name I don’t really like, should I move the site to a location? Absolutely not! Never move your website from one domain to the other. This is horrible for your rankings and credibility with Google.

9. Can I use the term “Realtor” for my website? No. If you register the term “Realtor,” you will eventually get a threatening letter from NAR demanding that you stop. Realtor is a registered trademark of the National Association of Realtors. If you really want to use it, you have to get permission from NAR, or a really good attorney.

10. Should I register the .net version if someone else has the .com version already? Generally it is not a good idea to register the .net version if the .com is already taken. In some cases the benefit of the domain name outweighs the issues so registering the .net may be a good idea. If you have a domain name idea, it’s wise to register both the .net and the .com versions.

11. Where should I register my domain name? GoDaddy is the best place we’ve found to register domain names. Just be careful to bypass all the other junk they offer. All you need is the domain name for a number of years.

12. Is it okay for my webmaster to register my domain name? No. You want to register your own site with your own information so you will maintain control. You need Administrative control over your domain name, but you can give your webmaster technical access to your domain related matters.

13. How can I find keywords for deciding what keywords to use in my website name? You can use any of the keyword tools available online such as the Google Keyword Tool.

12. Is it a good idea to register a long domain name with several keywords repeated in it? No. Your domain name should be reasonably short and should not use repeat words. Long domain names can trigger Google spam filters and cause your site to be penalized.

13. I have a free website from Keller Williams, is my site good for SEO? No. The free websites given by many real estate brokerages are not good for achieving high search engine rankings because many of them are built on the sub-domain of the brokerage website. These sites are not very successful in search results.

14. I forgot where I registered my domain name. How can I access it? You can find out information about any domain name on the web using one of the may Who Is Tools available, such as this one from Network Solutions.

15. Where can I buy an older domain name? You can buy an older domain name using Network Solutions’ Certified Offer program, or by going to auctions such as the GoDaddy Domain Auction.

Uses Of An Expired Domain

June 10th, 2010 No comments

Expired domains can provide a lucrative ongoing income. Before you register an expired domain you need to consider what uses you can make from it to maximize your revenue.

To explain, expired domains come about as domains are only registered for a certain period. If the domain isn’t renewed, then it will expire. Many expired domains have had a lot of time and effort spent on promoting them, so there are obvious benefits to be gained by re-registering an expired domain, such as ongoing visitor numbers.

Most passive revenue gained from an expired domain could come from advertising. It is worth noting that different adverts can pay different rates. For example, a financial services advert would normally pay more for a click-through than an advert for cooking recipes.

The more visitors your domain receives, the more clicks your adverts are likely to receive. So it is important to consider the number of links pointing to the domain, and the domains rankings in the top search engines. The more links and higher ranking, then the more visitors the domain is likely to receive.

There are websites out there that can provide this information on expiring, and expired, domains. You should seriously consider using their services in order to find your quality expiring domains, as they can vastly simplify your search.

So concentrate your search for expiring domains that will receive visitors and are based on a subject that will be attractive to advertisers. Once you have found an expired domain, and registered it, you will then need to consider your options.

A quick and simple option is to sign up to a domain parking service that will show adverts and split the advertising income with you. It may be quick and simple, but it is probably not the most effective use of your domain.

Instead consider building a website based on that domain. This may seem a daunting task, but with the help of a good teach-yourself-HTML book, free website templates, and a little practice, you may surprise yourself how quickly you can put together a website. Good content, and lots of pages, can be the key to a successful website.

To have a website you need to host it. There are many cheap hosting options from around $10 per year. There are even companies that offer free hosting – but make sure that the free hosting package allows you to use your own domain name.

With your own website you are then able to show your own adverts, or sign up to services such as Google AdSense which will show adverts for you.

You can also add links from this new website to any other websites you own, thus further promoting your other websites.

Links to third party websites can also be sold. If your new website is of a high enough standard, paid-for links can provide a significant income.

Building your own website is a harder task, and may involve an outlay for the hosting, but the income you can derive should outweigh the extra costs.

Choosing Domain Names – Hyphens or Not?

June 8th, 2010 No comments

Choosing a good domain name is one of most important steps in setting up your online business, but it’s getting harder and harder to find good names that are still available. You could use a domain name with hyphens, but is that really a good idea?

Let’s quickly review what makes a good domain name. A domain name needs to be relevant, easy to remember, keyword optimized, and free from trademark conflicts. It should also be shorter. Although seven characters or less is ideal, you may have to settle for a domain name that’s a little longer.

So you’ve just set up your new barbecue grills business and now you discover that barbecuegrills.com is already taken. Should you consider hyphenating the domain name to barbecue-grills.com or should you go back to the drawing board?

The first choice should always be to take the name without a hyphen. Having established that, there are some exceptions. Let’s look at hyphenated domain names and when they are might be good to use.

Domains with hyphens can sometimes be a good idea if you really want certain words in your domain name but all the domains without hyphens are already taken.

Another reason to use a hyphen is when the words you plan to use are harder to read without the hyphen. The domain hotellamps.com is harder to read than hotel-lamps.com. That is not necessarily a great domain name but it does serve to illustrate the point that some domains are easier to read with a hyphen.

You might also consider using hyphens for search engine optimization. Some people suggest that using hyphens helps the search engines to distinguish your keywords better. This may be a good option for webmasters whose primary goal is to optimize their sites for traffic from natural search engine rankings. The only catch here is that this could change over time since search engines are constantly adjusting their search algorithms.

Incidentally, if you decide not to use hyphens in your domain name, watch out for any unintended double meanings that might be embarrassing. To illustrate this point a couple of fairly suspicious domain names are therapistfinder.com and molestationnursery.com. In case you are wondering the latter was reportedly the domain for the Mole Station Native Nursery based in New South Wales, Australia, although it seems, fortunately, to have moved.

Whatever reason you have for using a hyphen in your domain name, it would be good to remember one thing. Some people will forget the hyphen when they type your domain name. So whenever you invest in promoting your site, some lucky webmaster who owns the un-hyphenated version of your domain is going to get some free traffic, courtesy of your hard work.

As you can see, there are some situations when using a hyphen in your domain name may be a good decision.

How (Not) to Choose a Domain Name

June 8th, 2010 No comments

The “No-Dash” Rule

In almost all of the cases, dashes (hyphens) and underscores will hurt your domain name in the efficiency department. This is because many times you won’t be able to give your web address to people in written form, but all you’ll get instead is the opportunity to say it. Let’s take Mommy Mentors as an example. Mommy Mentors’ domain name is mommymentors.com. If I were to tell someone about Mommy Mentors (in person, on the phone, in a radio ad), all I’d have to say is “Go to mommymentors.com.” Conversely, if the Mommy Mentors domain name would contain a dash (i.e. mommy-mentors.com) I’d have to use “mommy dash mentors dot com,” “mommy mentors dot com and don’t forget the hyphen,” or any number of other ungracious formulas. To say nothing of the fact that a lot of people will know about Mommy Mentors from an offline source and will intuitively type in their browsers “mommymentors.com.”

Some argue that a hyphenated name will allow search engines to distinguish actual words in your domain name and, provided that those words are some of your target keywords, you could get more traffic from search engines. But chances are that, for most domain names, it won’t happen. Too many variables would need to fall into place: you’d need a domain name which will contain a good search engine keyword, that keyword should be not too popular (to avoid competing with unbeatable sites for search engine traffic) and not too obscure either (no one would then look for it), and other factors. Besides, the increase in traffic you’d be gaining from this trick would not be worth losing the traffic that a good, non-hyphenated domain name could bring you.
Also, it’s been shown in studies that when trying to guess domain names, average Web users will first go straight for the no-dash version of the domain name, even when it’s made up from multiple words.

Only Use Digits When Appropriate

If the name of your company is 1 800 FLOWERS, for example, you will definitely want the digits in your domain name. It would look like 1800flowers.com. which is perfectly acceptable. But there are a lot of domain names out there whose use of digits only hurts them. Chances are no one will readily remember a domain name like cars33182.com.

Make It a “Dot Com”

Most people will remember your site’s name without the TLD (that is the part after the dot). Their intuition will guide them to assume that .com is what they need to type after the name of your Web site, since it is the most popular TLD. To illustrate, they will know it’s “mommymentors” that they will have to type followed by, most likely, .com. In this case they would be right. Rarely will it occur to the average Web user to try .net, .org, .us or others, when trying to reach your Web site by typing it in their browser. That is not to say that .org and .net are never good. They are, but in case you opt for one of them, it’s ideal that you also get the .com version of your domain name and redirect it to your actual Web site in order to make sure you capture the visitors who will try to reach you at YourSite.com. If not possible, get the alternates (.net, .org, .us, .info, etc.), but only if you find a really good name whose .com version is already taken.

The Shorter, The Better (Usually)

A friend bought a long time ago the domain name http://www.buenosaires-best-lodgings.com. When I saw it for the first time, I got a little dizzy. Lucky he didn’t stick a couple numbers and an underscore in there too. There are more chances that a typo will occur in that name than there are letters in it. That is a very dangerous name, as it will very likely cause its owner to miss a lot of business due to typos. In order for a domain name to be efficient it will either have to be logical and intuitive, like mommymentors.com, or else pretty short. Think Google, Yahoo, MySpace, YouTube, Wikipedia, MSN, AOL, Altavista… There’s a reason why the most popular Web sites have short names. First, they’re easy to remember. Second, the shorter the name, the fewer the chances that it will be misspelled by potential visitors.

If your company name is too long, use its initials as your domain name. For instance, what could have been work-at-home-moms.org (what a disaster!) is WAHM.org. Short and sweet. That doesn’t mean you should always throw away a perfectly good word, such as “mentors,” and make it into “mtrs” or something similar. If you have a good couple of words that you want to use and that will be easy to remember, go right ahead. Just try to keep it to two words and only use more when they’re fairly short (e.g. ilikecandy.com, dancewithme.com). If the combined total of characters in your prospective domain name is over 15 (www and the TLD excluded), it would probably be a good idea to look for alternatives.

How to Register a Domain Name

Always use a reliable domain registrar. Companies that have been in business for quite a few years usually provide good, reliable service. The last thing you want is to lose your domain name, after working hard to make it popular, because of inadequacies in the way your registrar does business. To be safe, it’s always good to hang out with the big kids on the Web.

There are some hunting domain tools available in most registrars that helps you find out if your desired domain is available. An example is the Instant Domain Search tool. However make it a point to choose the right registrar that supplies you with the right support.

Choose coupon codes which bring you discounts and provide a great way of buying domains without having to pay full price. The domain related forums offer disclose coupon codes for your benefit. Should go for Keyword Domain or Brand Domain?

June 8th, 2010 No comments

When you want to choose a domain name, the first problem you might facing is what type of domain name you should use? it is keyword domain or brand domain? You want the internet user to remember your website because of your domain name or ranking at the search engine is more important?

Brand Domain

You will found interesting is, a lot of well known and successful websites do not use keyword as their domain name. These online businesses have chosen to go with a completely original domain, and brand it. A few success examples like Google, Yahoo!, Amazon, Monster, and eBay. These companies are successful because of their company brand was consistent and not because keywords got them to the top. Consumer recognize their brand, because of the quality of service or product they provided. They feel justified, and likely to buy from them. However, to build a brand take serious work and large amount of resource. You need time to build it.

Keyword Domain

A keyword domain is a domain chosen to take advantage of search engine traffic. By choosing a domain that matches a keyword search, we are able to rank higher for targeted keywords and thereby benefit from added traffic and more potential for sales. For example if you are selling toy from China then you may choose something like “chinatoy.com”. The companies who are success in using keyword as their domain name like Search.com and Job.com. From these two success examples, you can found that they are using single word as their keyword. But it seem difficult to get single keyword domain, that is short and relevant to your industry obviously that would be better, and I doubt you’ll ever to get one unless you are ready to shell out thousands or perhaps millions just for the domain name.

So, which one should you go for? a brand based domain or keyword domain? For me, your decision is much depending on your business plan. If you web business will be used once by the visitor, and then most likely never used again, then keyword domain seem more logical. But if the return visit is very important for your business, then a brand based domain sound more helpful.

Furthermore, If you have a large offline advertising budget and the budget necessary to brand your company, then I will recommend you should go for brandable domain. If, on the other hand, you have a limited budget, I prefer you choose a keyword domain and let the search engines bring the customers to you.

Make Money from Buying Expired Domain Names

June 8th, 2010 No comments

-Have you worked endless hours night and day in order to drive more traffic to your website?

-Have you then experienced slow or no progress in improvement of status with search engines?

-Do you start to feel like you will give it up?

Then I have great news for you! You could increase your traffic to your website by thousands or ten thousands by very little effort and almost no financial investment at all. If that is of any interest to you (and it should be!) you should continue to read the following FREE article on internet marketing on how to Make Money from buying expired domain names.

First of all, how come there exists expired domain names at all?
Well, there are different reasons for this, but mainly there are two reasons that come back again and again.
The first reason is simply that people start to do other things in life or they start other businesses. Because of that, they do not find time and effort or even interest any longer to maintain the domain name they once did. There will then be an expired domain name with a lot of traffic that could be changed for your purposes. Or you could take that expired domain name and use for your own benefit of creating a business model out of it. The traffic already is there waiting for you without you doing a thing about it and the income could start from day one when you carefully blend Ad sense by a simple 1-10 page site.

The second reason why there exists expired domain names, is simply that a large corporation may have gone into bankruptcy (and in such a way exposes the domain to re-ownership) and the domain is no longer needed. Considering that large corporations often have spent thousands of dollars on advertising and SEO in order to get traffic to that domain it could be of great value for you to reclaim the domain with its continuing dynamic traffic.

The benefits are overwhelming

I guess you have already figured out some of the benefits with buying expired domain names. When you get traffic to your website in the ordinary way you start with setting up your website and get all things in place. That would be okay so far, but then comes the hard part with the marketing of the domain and the slow traffic coming to your website. Honestly we all recognize our first eagerness as it decreases by the time we realize it could take years to get any traffic of considerable amount so you can be listed on popular search engines. Not to mention the amount of money you can spend on the different methods.

However, I do not deny that the ordinary methods work; SEO, RSS, JV marketing etc and I do think you should use them on regular basis but the negative side is that they it is really very time-consuming and usually needs investment in money.

In contrary when done correctly in buying expired domain names you have a stream of traffic from day one and your site has immediate search engine placement. Is not that to prefer instead of the ordinary way?

In these expired domain names; there might have been an input of great knowledge, hours of work, even money, which has generated in a good amount of traffic, which you so easily could benefit from in a legal way. Why not take advantage of this concept behind obtaining free- targeted traffic simply by scooping them up.

What should you observe then?

Well you have to start out to look carefully at the different links on the expired domain names. Usually when there are plenty of backlinks on the domain it has also a steady stream of traffic. What is a backlink? For instance if you have a business of exclusive model cars you probably have made an exchange with hundreds of other websites on
the same theme. The traffic than is created from these backlinks. At the same time it improves our status with the search engines.

Therefore look for these domains that have a high amount of backlinks and you have freely got a stream of visitors interested in the model car niche.

You then could use the expired domain name in following examples.

– You can offer exclusive model cars via your affiliate links.

– Get the visitors email addresses in order to offer then backend products via the emails.

–Set up a website and Ad sense adverts that serve ads that get to your website visitors .

Another easy way to work with expired domain names is to let the traffic feed your already existing projects, domains that simply fit your site. Like if you have a site of toys find expired toy domains that will fit your own site and use them for your traffic gain. Your income will increase radically.

This is truly one of the underground tactic to get immediate traffic to your website without any costs at all. Let this new enthusiasm or yours lead you into the adventure of discovering expired domain names!

Some Common Myths Against Domain

June 8th, 2010 No comments

Lawyers eat nails for breakfast. Rap is Etch-a-Sketch set to music. The Law of Unintended Consequences governs the nation. These beliefs are part of a canon of urban folklore that we spread as truth among our friends. Applicants for domain names have developed their own myths. Some have been repeated so often, they sound true. Those untold information is what this paper is going to tell you.

Myth One: Always Pick .Com Domain Name

It is always asked a person to go for .com domain name. The domain ending with .com is easy to remember, as they are the most common name but not necessary the best. For one thing, there are many domain names ending in .com so it’s really hard to find a domain name ending with one. Picking a .com is good depending on how you are gaining traffic. If you are targeting people that are looking in search engines it can be pointless to just pick a .com domain. Though if you are advertising in Television, Newspapers or the Radio it might help somewhat.

Myth Two: Avoid Using Dashes Or Never Go For That

Once again, this all depends on what you are doing. Remember, search engines translate dashes as spaces, so if you are targeting a popular keyword and use dashes as spaces, than your page will be easier to get onto the top ten search results of that keyword. Some search engines put more emphasis on this than others. So avoiding dashes or not applying anywhere in the domain name can be a fruitful option for you.

Myth Three: Selecting A Domain Name

Choosing a domain name may be a pain, many may prefer domain names that are short but they are not necessarily better. Its true you don’t want a domain name that is extremely long but you don’t want it to be so short that nobody can remember it (unless you own a url forwarding service). There are many combinations of words you can use. It is highly suggested checking a domain name generator. They can be very useful, you enter a keyword and it displays possible combinations with other words and tells you if they’re available.

Myth Four: Domain Used Forever.

While it’s possible that you’ll keep your registered domain name forever, it is not guaranteed. Several things can happen that would cause you to lose your domain name. First, you have to register your domain name each year (or register it for multiple years up front) in order to keep your access to it. If you forget to renew your registration, you could lose your domain name, or someone else can register it and charge you a huge fee to have it transferred back to your name. Second, you could lose your domain name in a trademark dispute.

Myth Five: Domain Registration Through Company Name

You cannot use your company name for the domain registration; in fact, you don’t have the right to register any domain name, even if you have a trademark on the corresponding company name. The reason for this is that a trademark on a business name doesn’t give you exclusive access to use that name. It only gives you exclusive access to use that name for the particular products and / or services that you offer.

Do You Really Need A Domain Name?

June 7th, 2010 No comments

Is there really a need to provide your website or online business a domain name? What difference will a domain name do to your website or online business? Domain name or the unique name that you chose for your website or online business – independent of ISP – is beneficial to webmasters, website owners, online business owners, online customers and online users. Domain names are significant in many ways. Listed here are some of the basic benefits of having a domain name.

Benefits of Domain Name

o Domain Name Allows You To Change Web Host or ISP Without Having To Change The Name.

It will be easier to change to a different web host or ISP if your website or online business owns a domain name. If ever you find a better web host than the one your site is using right now, you can easily transfer to it without the burden of having to change the name again. There will be nothing to hold you back from moving on towards a different web host since the name will remain the same.

In short, domain names are portable – you can literally carry it anywhere you want or in varied web hosts as you please. Now no one can hold you back from changing web hosts and ISPs. You won’t be tied up to your old web host or ISP again!

o Domain Names Provide Identity for Your Online Business.

Giving your website or your online business a domain name is actually giving it its own identity. Owning a domain name for your website or online business builds the credibility and image of the business. Even for the regular online users, visiting a site through its domain name is definitely better than visiting it through a free site with such a long name!

o Domain Names Give Your Site An Edge in Search Engines Submission

There are some search engines that do not accept submissions from a website with no domain name – meaning the ones hosted by a free site. Lucky if you find a good number of search engines that will accept your submission.

o Domain Names Make It Easy For Your Customers To Remember Your Company.

More often than not, it will be a whole lot easier for your customers to remember your company or online business if it has a domain name. Moreover, it will be easier for them to visit your website using a domain name. Having a domain name will be beneficial not only to you as a webmaster but to your customers and the general online users as well.

Domain names are essential for your website or online business in terms of identity, image, credibility, portability and search engine submission. But the benefits do not stop there. Giving your website a domain name also helps your customers.

Is There a Need to Optimize Domain Names?

June 7th, 2010 No comments

Domain names are essential in your effort to gain higher ranking and visibility on the search engines. The effect is not as high as inbound links – perhaps – but as always, a little help can change a lot. Most website owners who are new in the internet business use their company name as the domain name. This is not bad; however, if you could find a more fitted name that will direct people and potential customers to your site, it would be grand. What most new website owners don’t know is that a good domain name can actually help the site to rank well on the search engines.

Company Name as Domain Names

One of the most common mistakes that new domain owners commit is the choice of domain name. Most of them will opt to use exactly the company name. What they don’t understand is that you need to place relevant keywords on the domain name to get more traffic and gradually get higher sales profit. The domain must carry significant keywords that tell about the products or the services that the company offers. A company that sells “sports ball” online should have a domain name like “sportsball.com” rather than “bigjoe.com” (say Big Joe is the name of the company).

The domain name with relevant keywords will generate more visitors than the company name that tells nothing about the company itself. In registering a domain name, think of important keywords which you think your visitors will be looking for in search for your product or services. In doing so, the domain name is actually helping your site’s visibility and ranking on the search engines.

Advantage of Optimized Domain Names

To see if placing keywords on the domain name really works, you can try it for yourself. Key in some keywords on the search box and notice that those on the top list are sites with keyword-rich domain names. This is due to the fact that search engines read the keyword on the domain name as it crawls on the entire site. Hence, optimized domain names will be very useful and effective.

Getting the Best Domain Name

Most of the internet users think of domain names as all ending in “.com”. New website owners who are in search of a good domain name may end up feeling disappointed knowing that all his potential names are already taken. What happened to all the “.com” names? With millions of websites worldwide, what will you expect?

Don’t worry because search engines treat all domain extensions as equal. So the “.net”, “.biz” and other extensions are all cared for at the same level by major search engines. These extensions can actually be the key for a greater opportunity to register an optimized domain name that carries relevant keywords about your site.

Altogether, what you need is an optimized domain name. It is not all that you need to increase your site’s visibility and rank but it does a little help!

How to Register a New Domain Name

June 6th, 2010 No comments

Registering a domain name is seen by many newcomers to the web as a really complicated, highly technical task that the average mortal cannot do.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

You only need to bits of information on hand when you register your domain name:

- What you are going to call this domain

- and your web hosting DNS values, these are give to you by your hosting company and look something like:

NS1.WEBSITEWELCOM.COM and

NS2.WEBSITEWELCOME.COM

They are almost always provided to you in pairs.

So first go to a reputable domain name registrar.
I suggest using either http://www.Better-Domain-Names.com or http://www.Godaddy.com

These may not be the cheapest registrars currently on the web but their service, and reliability are incredible. I generally work on the principle “You get what you pay for”, and never a truer thing can be said about domain name registrars.

OK, lets walk through the process of registering a domain name:

Using your web browser, visit a domain registrar. Usually on the front page there is a search option to check if the domain name you want is available.

Lets say for example, that you are trying to register a domain name for your Dog Training website.

So you type in dogtraining.com press enter, and it comes back that that domain is already take.
Now, I would suggest that you place prefix and or suffix words to the domain name you are after.
So you could try:

betterdogtraining.com

bestdogtraining.com

dogtrainingnewsletter.com

dogtraininganswers.com

You could also try placing dashes “-” in your domain names to separate words.
Admittedly, there are a group of search engine optimization people who currently believe that the search engines are now starting to penalize sites with ‘dashes” in them.
Another thing, sites that do not contain dashes and do not have any numbers in them, generally seller for a higher price.
So if you think you might sell your domain sometime in the future, then it may be advisable to avoid using both dashes and numbers.

Lets say, that you find dogtraininganswers.com is available.
So you move to the next page. Generally this asks you for the details of the person that is going to be the owner of this domain. Generally this will be your name, address, phone number etc.

Next the system will ask you for how long you want to register your domain for, the minimum period is 1 year and the maximum I have seen is 10 years. Most people go for the 1 year period, only because it costs the least.
On the Better-Domain-names.com screen and the Godaddy.com page, you will see a link that says:
“If hosting your site elsewhere, please click here to set name servers”

Please set your name servers now (using the name server values given to you by your hosting company), otherwise if you have to come back and change the default name servers at a later date. the problem is that it generally takes a long time for the name servers to propagate around the net and you could wait several days for this to happen. But if you set them now, they should propagate within a few minutes, maybe half an hour at the most.

Once you have keyed in *both* name servers values, you then move onto the payment screen where you key in your credit card details.

Here you may see an option called “Auto Renew”. Check this box!
This allows you to renew the domain automatically when its term expires. Any good domain name registrar should send you an multiple emails before the domain is set to expire, and if you take no action on these emails, then the domain will get automatically renewed.
If you don’t set this “Auto renew” option, then system will let the domain lapse and it becomes available for some else to purchase.

Once you press the “submit” button, it will take just a few seconds for that new domain name to be yours.

Domain Name Registration and Search Engine Rankings

June 6th, 2010 No comments

The Registration of domain names is a thriving business on the Internet today – this is evident by the high bids that companies are willing to pay in Per-Per-Click (PPC) engines to attract potential customers for domain name registration.

The business of domain name registration is sometimes referred to as “Internet Real Estate”. Just like we can occupy high traffic areas in the central business districts of major cities in the real world, we can register domains for commonly used words or sought after keywords to generate traffic more easily to our websites. While most common words and abbreviations have already been taken for the most widely used top level domain names, with a little bit of creativity we can still register an endless number of promising domain names.

While there is no clear indication to what extent .com, .net as well as country top level domain names such as .co.uk, .de, .fr and so forth influence search engine rankings of websites, the word is that .org domains are still favored by Google as part of the non-commercial tradition.

However, this article is not looking at how the domain extension influences the ranking of a website as this is thought to be insignificant for search engine rankings. A stronger influence on search engine rankings have indeed the length of registration, frequency of DNS changes as well as the reputation of the registrar.

Even though sometimes overrated in its importance – especially in relationship to its effect on search engine rankings, domain names do remain an important asset for the online corporate identity of your business.

The main consideration concerning your domain name will be to choose between a creative name (such as “yahoo”, “alibaba”, “kazaa”) or a keyword name (such as “study-tourism”, “retail-gifts” or “hawaii-mortgage-company”. In fact using main keywords in your domain name does have a positive effect on your search engine rankings, especially to get your rankings off the ground after launching a new website. Down the road the effect however becomes almost negligible.

While many people tend to register numerous domain names to accommodate most important key words within them, they overlook that Google and other major search engines will pay almost the same attention to sub-domains. So instead of registering “hawaii-real-estate”, “florida-real-estate” and so forth, we might as well just register “real-estate” and have sub domains such as “hawaii.real-estate”, “florida.real-estate” and so forth.

What people further underestimate is that search engines in general look for keywords in the URL (unique resource locator) which comprises of the top level domain, any potential sub-domains and of course the file name. So, if you happen to be using a creative domain name that does not contain any important key words, you can of course include your main keywords in the file name of the webpage itself, i.e. florida-real-estate.html.

Hence, in a nutshell, while domain names are a major asset for your corporate identity, their significance for search engine rankings is overrated, as there are various ways to accommodate significant keywords in the URL and eventually other onsite factors (coding techniques, content) of a website will have a greater impact for search engine rankings.

Deleted Domains Can Kickstart a New Website

June 6th, 2010 No comments

Are you getting ready to launch a new website online with a brand new domain name? You may want to consider registering a deleted domain name instead. Here are some of the benefits to consider from this strategy.

Take advantage of previous backlinks

Quite a few deleted domain names still have a large number of websites still linking to them even though the site at that domain is offline. By registering that abandoned domain name for yourself , uploading content, and getting it live again, you can take advantage of these ready made backlinks in your quest for higher search engine rankings.

Get traffic to your site from day one!

When you register a deleted domain name, you can sometimes get traffic that was going to the old site at that domain name right from the day one of being online. This traffic will come from the backlinks, possibly some search engines that still have old pages ranked, and some people who had the domain bookmarked in their favorites and come back weeks or months later.

Do your research though

There can be potential problems with deleted domain names that is too involved to go in here. One thing I would suggest though is to do your due diligence and make sure that the deleted domain name will suit your purposes.

Registering deleted domain names is only one of many strategies out there to boost traffic to new websites. Some people will register a large number of the best deleted domain names they can find, slap a few articles on it then wait and watch to see which ones ‘stick’. Others will carefully research the deleted domains and only choose ones that have a completely clean past.

Whatever you do, choose a domain that is focused on your main keyword and topic. Registering a domain with the keyword ‘healthinsurance’ for a free internet gaming site only invites problems with the major search engines. Stick to relevant keywords for the domain names.

Any way you look at it though, deleted domains are worth a look.

Unused Domains Collecting Dust in Your Domain Portfolio Attic? Develop Them and Reap the Reward!

June 5th, 2010 No comments

The last time you looked at your domain portfolio, did you see any domains that you are doing nothing with? They are just sitting there collecting dust. We all have them. It’s always those domains that we purchased or registered thinking they were going to be the next big thing. Perhaps you thought they were going to be an easy quick flip on the domain market place yet you have yet to even get a nibble nor less a bite. Don’t worry, you aren’t the only one with this problem.

So you may be asking, what do I do with these domains? Do I sell them for my cost or perhaps less then my cost and take a hit just to get rid of them? Do I just let them expire and forget about them? Well you could get rid of them but it doesn’t sound like it’s going to be beneficial for you to do so. The best way to fix this issue is to take some time and develop these domains. No one will visit the site if there is no website nor if the search engines know it even exists. Building up a website on an unused domain can be very rewarding but the only negative aspect to this is it takes up time. If you have 5 or more domains sitting around building up a website on each can not only take some time but also will suck away your time to keep them updated. In order to keep good search engine ranking they must be constantly updated with fresh content or else they will slowly slip down the ranks and disappear in the 10th or 20th page of a keyword search.

If you have several domains that are being unused at the moment and you don’t have plans on using them why not let a professional build them up for you? The advantages to this is it’s stress free, takes up no time, and unless you stay on top of all of the optimization tricks will probably have much better results then if you developed them. The only disadvantage is of course it costs money. How much money you ask? Well the prices can be very high per domain to actually fairly cheap. Although there are some new companies out there that is providing this service for less then you would spend on a combo fast food meal for each domain each month. These companies monetize your unused domain name and all you do is sit back and watch the money flow in. The only 2 things they as of you is the small fee each month to provide this service and also to point your domain name servers over to theirs so it will point to their server. They host the domain and keep it updated as part of the paid service.

So what are you waiting for? Whether you do it yourself or you pay a professional to develop your domains get out there and get started today. Unlock those domains you have boxed up in your domain attic and blow off the dust and let them start earning you money. You might be surprised how valuable those “worthless” domains actually are.

5 Reasons Why Keywords Should Be in Domain Names

June 4th, 2010 No comments

Should I have my Keywords in my domain name? Yes!

Whenever possible, your primary key words should be in your domain name. It’s not always possible but if you take your time you might be able to get close to achieving that goal. You say why? Search engines should always be on the brain in spite of what you here others say. Always do as much as you possible can to increase you chances of getting being found in search engines. Keywords in domain names give search engines clear intentions of your web site’s plan and purpose. Why not help search engines help you by having keywords in your domain names when possible? Does this scenario fit you? You come up with an idea that you think is great and will make a great website. You immediately do a search to see if the domain name is available. It’s available so you quickly purchase it because you think someone else is going to get it.

You can’t believe the domain name hasn’t already been purchased and you own it now. You wonder why it hasn’t been purchased by now. There was a big Internet craze in the 90′s and most of the cool dot-com names were purchased. You research the domain name using the Google search tool and find out very few people search for the domain name you chose. The research indicates a broad search of a hundred and sixty people per month typing in your new domain name.

160 searches per month won’t bring any kind of significant traffic to your website. We all know that a web site without traffic is lonely website and pretty much a dead website. You start to doubt the domain name you chose. It sounded good when you thought of it and it fit the website plan you had in mind to create. You check the exact search phrase amount using the Google search tool and the number of exact searches are whittled down to about sixty searches per month.

Now you really doubt if you chose the right domain name for your website. Only sixty searches per month for the domain name you chose. That’s worse than the broad search count and more accurate because it’s the exact phrase. You rationalize the fact that the domain name only cost you about ten dollars and that’s not too much money. It’s not a bad investment but now you have ten domain names you’re never going to use and that comes to about a hundred dollars in cost. The hundred dollars you spent on domain names could have gotten you hosting for a website for at least a year.

You dig further and discover you only need to add an “s” to make your domain name plural and you’ll get about two thousand more searches per month to your website. So you rush back to your domain search tool to see if the domain name is available with an “s” and find out it’s been taken by someone else. You discover it was registered by a company five years ago but they never built a website using the domain name and it’s for sale. They want three thousand dollars for the domain name and you think that’s just crazy! No way will you pay that amount to get that domain name. The excitement you originally had slowly dies and you rationalize that your idea really wasn’t that great after all.

Now you’re back to square one, looking for a new domain name. It’s time to go back to the think tank and create a website plan. You realize you need to find the clear intentions and clear goal of your website before you build it.

Five Benefits to having keywords in domain names.

1. It gives search engines the clear intentions of your website.
2. It gives your visitors the clear intentions of your website.
3. It gives you clear intentions of your website.
4. It saves money by purchasing one domain name.
5. It gives you a chance to brand the name of your website.

Language Technology Reinventing Domain Name Searching

June 4th, 2010 No comments

Frustrated Domain Searchers

If you have tried to register a domain name lately, you’ve probably been quite frustrated with the whole process. The reasons are simple – good domain names are scarce and the popular ones have long been claimed.

Traditionally, when you needed to register a domain name, you went to a credited domain name registrar’s website, such as GoDaddy. Say you want to register the name, “filmratings.com.” You would type “filmratings.com” in GoDaddy’s search box and click the search button. Whoops, it’s already taken! Then you think, what about movieratings.com? Nope. Let me try movierankings.com. Nope. How about movierating.com, filmrating.com, onlinefilmratings.com? All taken. You end up sitting hours in front of you computer before finding a domain name you really like – if you’re lucky.

Domain Suggestion not Easy for Computers

So you wonder, wouldn’t it be nice if there were a tool that can automate the process and make this whole ordeal less painful? If this strikes a chord, you are not alone. Every month, 35,000 searches are made in Google for “domain suggestions” and “domain name suggestions.” This is a lot of frustrating searches.

Computers can help in the process of finding a domain name, but it is not always easy. Humans have the ability to reason and manipulate language. While searching for an alternative to “filmratings.com,” for example, a person can substitute each word with their synonyms, “movie” for “film,” or “ratings” for “rankings.” Not an easy thing for computers.

Humans are also able to grasp a word’s different shades of meaning. For example, “film” can mean a movie (as in a film festival) or the medium photographers use to shoot photos (as in camera films). The meaning changes with context, but a computer is not able to understand context; thus, they ignore the slight variations in subtext.

Finally, humans are able to make word associations that computers cannot. For example, “credit card debt,” “low rate credit card,” “get a credit card” are good expansions of “credit card,” while “sexy credit card,” “strong credit card” are not. Computers cannot replace a person’s linguistic and world knowledge-but it doesn’t stop the geeks from trying.

A Brief History of Domain Search Tools

In the beginning, there were web tools – usually called name generators or name spinners – that could use language rules or word combining techniques to generate a list of names. These rules, for example, changing singular nouns to plural ones or adding common prefixes or suffixes such as “my,” “online,” or “best,” are usually very simple and easy to craft. The disadvantage of using these rules, however, is that the number of suggestions offered by the computer is very limited. This approach, although naive, has been adopted by most domain name registrars because of its simplicity.

Then, in a means of improving the methodology, more sophisticated language technologies were adopted. By using technologies such as synonym substitution and statistical word collocations, these systems, best represented by DomainsBot, can generate hundreds of suggestions for any given keyword, greatly expanding the scope of the technology. The problem to this approach, however, is that many suggestions don’t make much sense and thus have little value. For example, the top five suggestions for the keywords “domain suggestions” from DomainsBot are:

  • Integral Domain Suggestions
  • Frequency Domain Suggestions
  • Domain Suggestions Objections
  • Binding Domain Suggestions
  • Exclusive Domain Suggestions

Clearly, this is far from perfect.

Enter Natural Language Processing (NLP). This technology has become the core technology and building block for many Internet companies, such as Google and Amazon. Sophisticated NLP technology has pushed the domain name search to a new high-at least, to a usable level. Within the last couple of years, two companies have used this system and made it work: DomainWhiz.net and DomainTools.

Here are the top five suggestions for the keywords “domain suggestions” from DomainWhiz:

  • DomainNamesSuggestions
  • SuggestDomainNames
  • DomainNamesSuggestion
  • DomainSearchSuggestions
  • DomainSuggestionsTool

…and from DomainTools:

  • URLSuggestions
  • WebDomainIdeas
  • DomainSparks
  • SuperSiteIdeas
  • DomainAlternativess

These suggestions (still available today, by the way) all make sense.

The two companies each have their weaknesses and strengths. In general, DomainTools’ suggestions are shorter, a plus. On the other hand, DomainWhiz’s suggestions tend to use keywords that would come naturally to a user. These keywords, with high SEO values, boost a website’s ranking in search engines’ returns, which leads to more visitors and more web traffic to the site.

How do the domain suggestion websites make money? DomainWhiz earns a commission by directing their users to GoDaddy to finalize the purchase. DomainTools’ revenue is obtained from user memberships. DomainTools shows the top 20 suggestions to the end user. If the user wants to see more suggestions than this, he is required to pay a $15 monthly membership fee. Although unconfirmed, DomainTools also appears to be a GoDaddy reseller.

Tips For Choosing a Profitable eCommerce Domain Name

June 4th, 2010 No comments

Keep It Simple And Easy To Remember

Domains – Most customers who look for a website want to remember something that is associated with the product or service you are offering. Unless you have a lot of money to spend on advertising like eBay or Amazon your best bet is to choose a domain name that represents your products and services. Use simple and easy to remember words that are spoken often by your customers. For example, your eCommerce business might be selling racing bikes so consider the domain names: racingbikes.com or roadracingbikes.com. Try to avoid names like joesracingbikes.com or smithsracingbikes.com even if your company is called that. We want to make sure your domain name is easy to remember and captures the widest scope of customers.

Don’t Be Fancy
Try to make sure you choose domain names with the correct spelling and to use short hand words. I have seen some domain names like racingbiks.com or rcingbikes.com. These are words we may know when we are sending a text via SMS but when it comes to marketing your eCommerce business it is not worth shortening your domain name for people to try to remember.

It’s very common to see onlinebusiness.com get shortened to onlinebiz.com, which is not very good for search engine optimization and other keyword link strategies that I will discuss about.

Choosing Dot Com Or Another Extension?
According to Verisign, over 45% of total domain registrations have a .com extension. Keep in mind that shoppers will more than likely remember a.COM extension while shopping online and this will have an impact on how successful your business will be. In any business I set up the first extension I look for is a .com, which allows me to expand and market my business globally even if I am not a business located in the United States.

Domain Name Friendly For Search Engines
You may have realised my emphasis on choosing a domain name that is related to your products and services and also my encouragement to keep it simple. The reason why I recommend you look at choosing a domain name related to your products and services is to allow for search engines to easily find your website. Having the right keywords that relate to your eCommerce business in your domain name can play a vital role. For example if my domain name was racingbikes.com and I went online to search for “racing bikes”, more than likely your website will come up at the top because it is the most relevant to the key words searched. This has already conquered half of your battle. If you had chosen rcingbikes.com, then you would be spending a great amount of time and resources trying to optimize your website.

A question I get asked quite a lot is what happens if the domain name I want for my eCommerce business is taken? Since there are billions of websites on the Internet, it would be common for single and double word domain names to be already taken. Though don’t sweat, because you can still create a domain name from other keywords in niche markets. Let’s take for example the keywords “racing bikes” again. Since racingbikes.com is taken, let us dig further and choose a brand of bikes you want to focus on. Shimano is a popular and reputable brand: so let us choose shimanoracingbikes.com. You could repeat this with many other brands and use that to create a lot of domain names that would be directed to your website. Alternatively being more generic you can choose topracingbikes.com or leadingracingbikes.com. Which ever keywords are dominate in your market, try to find out which ones would be profitable for your eCommerce business and search to see if the domain name is available.

Checking If Your Domain Name Is Available
There are many domain name registers in the market but I don’t recommend you buy domain names from them as they don’t provide good support.

How To Register Your Domain Name
The company that I use to register my domains is Namecheap and I can highly recommend them. They are very affordable and provide 1 year of private registration as of writing this. It also allows me to keep my business address and phone details private at no additional cost. A lot of top Internet marketers use them because they provide good support and also they refer any spam complaints to the web host.

The process in registering your domain is a very simple process. Once you have decided on a domain name, check to see if it is available and then register it through Namecheap. Once that is completed, you will receive a couple of notification emails with your registration certificate and you will be the owner of the domain. In the next few posts I will explain to you how to setup your hosting services and link them to your domain name.
